"What just happened?" I've been asking that since '73! Rumour has it that Focus played the 8-minute song at that faster (!) tempo because 'Midnight Special' only gave them 5 minutes.

yeah cuz original was like 6 minutes so they speeded up things
If you listen, each verse starts a little bit faster than the previous. It was a nice choice if they had to squeeze the song into the tight space - gave them a chance to warm up since they had never rehearsed it that fast before. They we're smokin at the end. :-)

Saw these guys in concert in 1976. Amazing. Thijs Van Leer is great on vocals but Jan Akkerman, the lead guitarist, he is one accomplished player. Great reaction boys!

I was 8, and feeling old too. But there are lots of great jazz-fusion-art music groups and players all over the world today. Even more than in the 1970s, thanks to better schools. Although pretty unknown for the mainstream pop-rock-rap audience, of course.
@@herrbonk3635 I agree, that's what I meant - as far as I know, at the time Focus was considered a rock band, they weren't really categorized as jazz fusion (now, in retrospect, they definitely seem more like fusion!) with Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Larry Coryell, Holdsworth. But still, you don't see many out there similar to Thijs in any genre - he's just different! Speaking of incredible players today, I have a feeling you're familiar with Senri Yamaguchi...she is a magnificent drummer, of any style!!

Saw them live when this track was first released, they were a support act then on their first UK tour. The original track now sounds stately compared to this manic performance when they squashed it into the time slot they were given. Hats off to the band to pull this off on live TV, they probably had never taken it at this tempo before, but every one of them smashed it and barely seemed to break a sweat. Seriously talented musicians but still able to have some fun with that 'vocal'.
Thijus Van Leer on organ, whistling, flute and skat. Jan Ackermann on guitar (listen to the album version of this track to hear him at his best), Cyriel Havermans on bass and Pierre Van Der Linden on drums.

You picked the wrong version guys..... Focus were appearing with a time limit, but the track has so much crammed into 8 minutes that, in order to reduce it to 5 minutes, they upped the tempo. Please react to the original version from the 'Moving Waves' album... do yourselves, and us a favour :)
I know what you're saying, but at the same time it's kind of cool! As an alternate anyway; they really kicked some serious butt, playing it that fast! I don't know if we would've got the same priceless reaction from the guys if it were the classic version they reacted to - there is a certain comedic value in this one, maybe the faster tempo also accentuated Thijs' insanity level a bit! lol Incredible musicians, so far ahead of their time! Hard to believe this was almost 50 years ago! I was 12 or 13 years old at the time.
If you listen to the soundtrack instead of a live performance the drumming is incredible.

This is EXACTLY why you should always keep a very short daily diary as I honestly can not remember if I saw Focus around this time in Croydon at a 3,000 venue Pub/Hall where many top bands like Genesis, Quo , Roxy Music and Co played and my M8 I used to go all around Concerts and Football with died suddenly aged just 60 , nearly 6 years ago so I will never know now....

This is one of the many times I WISH I HAD KEPT A DIARY with brief notes because I, genuinely, don't remember if this was one of the many groups I saw at a 3,000 Music Venue which was a Pub, as well called The Croydon Greyhound in London. We intended to go but I just don't know and the guy I went to Rock Concerts with when we were 17-25 is now dead so , sadly, I will never know....

Y'all should take the time to listen to this song the way it was actually recorded LOL. Midnight Special only gay 5 minutes for performance but, Hocus Pocus is 8 minutes long so they had to up the tempo and it turned into a freaking circus LOL!

I must say that the vocalist in the flute player and organ player the yodler lots and lots of talent here and you guys made me laugh all the way through this song but on a serious note I wish this group would have brought more songs to the table I'm sure they had other songs but I don't know what they are would be interesting to react to a few more
