This was on the Midnight Special, and was originally too long for the time slot, so the band had to really speed it up, hence the frantic nature. The audience knew the song and appreciated how the band executed the sped-up song, and they gave it a standing ovation.

This was a show called The Midnight Special. Focus chose this song because it was their 1st time performing in front of an American audience and they didn't have any English songs. The studio version is considerably longer but they were given a time schedule to fit. No problem, they played the whole song, they just played it faster to fit the time constraint.

I think you are thinking of The Rolling Stones song Gimme Shelter. This is not that. But THIS IS PHENOMENAL! Jan Akkerman, lead guitarist of Focus, was voted in joint first place as the greatest guitar player in the world in 1973. He could wipe the floor with every other guitarist of that time, and probably still could today. Brian May adores this guitarist. I do too. He is really special. But let us not detract from all the other band members who are equally superlative. Note how every guy in the group is allowed to shine. I like that. We hear them all.
To understand this song think on this: take four superlative musicians and tell them to have fun. That is what Focus did. This song is normally 7 minutes long, but Focus only had about 4 minutes on The Midnight Special. So, instead of cutting their song short, they played it at nearly double time. GENIUS!
Yes, Thijs van Leer is yodeling. But this is almost operatic yodeling. Ever tried that? It is not easy. Yes that is a flute, but Thijs is not just playing the flute, he is almost yodeling through it. Creative and magical.
This song is on a similar level to Green Onions by Booker T and the MG's. Both songs are not about words.....they are about how the music makes you feel. Hocus Pocus....FUN & ENERGY! Green Onions.....COOL! And so on.

I am Dutch as well and my whole life a fan of Jan Akkerman, which is the guitarplayer in Focus. Bert Ruiter is on bas, Thijs van Leer vocals/organ/flute and the drummer is Pierre van der Linden. If you think this is mad drumming from him you should listen to Anonymous II, which is on the album Focus III. This song lasts for more than 26 minutes and each member of the band plys a solo in it, at the end Pierre van der Linden does his drumsolo, with a simple drumkit, like you saw in the video here, but it will blow your mind, even professional drummers still try to figure out how the hell he did that drumsolo (btw, the can find it on the internet under Anonymous II by Focus). Thumbs up from the Netherlands!

Early seventies, there were two major Dutch bands, sort of being labeled under prog rock, that were very good. One was Focus, with Jan Akkerman at one point in 1973 being voted best guitarplayer of the world by UK music magazine Melody Maker (so take that Eric Clapton!), the other was a band called Ekseption, who did a lot of adaptations of classical music, especially had a brilliant keyboard player with Rick van der Linden. I guess they were more close to prog rock while Focus mixed it up more towards the rock side of things (but had many influences from classical music and jazz even)
They were very big in Holland, but only Focus had a bit of exposure outside the country and had two relative hits with Hocus Pocus and the song called Sylvia, which is much more mellow, but has a beautiful guitar melody line.
Dutch always had some pretty good bands in general and guitar players in particular, like George Kooymans of The Golden Earring, you may know their international hit song Radar Love.
Anyway, some context, glad you enjoyed it, first reactions to this particular song and even more so this particular performance is always a joy to see people jaw dropped responses.
And yeah, that was a flute, more specifically a traverso.
