      Well worth a whole video, Mr. Video, to treat yourself to the complete version. Or a rare concert to see them live. As for "explaining", that takes multiple viewings first. And maybe Mozart-level musicianship all around. I mean, watch again and listen to the guitarist. Each break is different yet returns to the saee riff.

    Most that needs to be told about this performance, like how they had to speed it up to fit the time frame given and the amounts of coke used by the keyboard-player/singer/flutist allready been mentioned by others, so no need to add that in detail anymore.
    One person i do need to point out is Jan Akkerman, the guitarist, while in this performance you get a wall of sound thrown at you which drowns the guitar sound a bit, he's one to "Focus" on.
    He ranked best guitarist in the world for 2 or 3 years in a row in a time where we had the real guitar gods out there too (like Jimmy Page, Frank Zappa, Santana, Clapton, Van Halen, Duane Allman, Brain May and Jeff Beck to name a few)
    He had "godly" timing, speed and touch, on top of the talent he had to start with but for some reason he's one of the less known big names of the era.
    Yet he inspired countless guitarists ever since, even up till today...
    You'd do well to check out a few of their studio tracks where the sound mix is a lot better than most live recordings (the recordings are limited due to quality of recording equipment at the time, i tell ya the band sounded amazing on stage, the "let-down" is the recording quality itself)
    If these guys tickled your curiosity, then i strongly suggest checking out more of them, songs like Sylvia, House of the kings, Janis and ofc this song, Hocus Pocus.
    Thnx for the upload :D
    (ps, the singer didnt sing much, he used his voice as an instrument instead, therefor the yodeling and other sounds he produces)

    "Hocus Pocus" is a song by the Dutch rock band Focus, written by keyboardist, flautist and vocalist Thijs van Leer and guitarist Jan Akkerman. "Hocus Pocus" takes the form of a rondo, consisting of alternation between a powerful rock chord riff with short drum solos and then varied solo "verses" (in the original all performed by Thijs van Leer) which include yodeling, eefing, organ playing, accordion, scat singing, flute riffs, and whistling. The single version is significantly edited from the album version. "Hocus Pocus 2" is a slightly faster version with some funk elements and rhythms added. It was released as a single in its own right in Europe and was the B-side to the North American release of "Hocus Pocus". When performing live, Focus would play "Hocus Pocus" even faster. The song has been used a lot in commercials, Nike, McDonalds and in a lot of movies was just used in the trailer for Pixar's 2020 film Onward. It was also used in DreamWorks' 2020 film Trolls World Tour.

    I've never seen a reaction to this that wasn't 'WTAF!' Singer/Yodeller/Whistler/Flautist/Organist and apparent loon Thijs Van Leer always becomes the centre of attention - although the main point about this performance is that they compressed the original recording into the time slot they were given without missing anything. Hats off also to six-stringer Jan Akkerman, who is another one of those guys who makes you want to smash your guitar against a wall and never play again.

      they had to speed it up like that to fit into the shows time allotment for each guest. yes, it's normally quite a bit longer and slower.

    • @andrewlaw
      @andrewlaw Před 3 lety

      It's twice as long but they were only allotted a short time slot so they doubled the speed to fit it all in. It makes the song sound even more zany than previously. 😆

    The first part of the song he's yodeling. The second part is scat singing, which a lot of jazz artists used to do. The wiki says there's eefing in it too (you want to here eefing, search Riddle and Phelps on youtube. You won't believe your ears, lol), but it's not in this live version. I don't remember in the studio version either, but I haven't heard it in a long time. I love you reactions. This is turning in to my favorite reaction channel. Keep up the good work!!!!!

    Ok, so listen. I'm going to request Duran Duran one more time but here's why I'm re-requesting. All the other people doing reactions keep starting off with their songs from the 90s which is a decade after their heyday. So if you're ever going to react to them I want you to start off properly with one of their earliest hits so you can get the proper experience. I would choose "Girls on Film" if it was entirely up to me, however, "Rio", "Hungry Like the Wolf" or "Planet Earth" would also make fantastic starting points. I don't want you to ruin everything for yourself the way these other people have. Save "Ordinary World" and "Come Undone" for people who don't know any better.
    I have said my piece. Good day, sir. 😊
    p.s. You should go with the official music videos whenever possible with them.
