  • ► I can’t believe English students don’t do this
► If you can't do step 3 you'll never tell the difference
    ►Download the Lesson Notes: howtospeakenglishclearly.com/...
In this video, I walk you through 3 simple steps to learn the difference between /æ/ Vs /e/. These 2 English vowel sounds are incredibly difficult to differentiate and I hear people confusing the 2 all the time. It’s essential for both your English Speaking and English Listening to be able to tell the difference between both sounds.
I break the video down into my 3 step process for learning the difference.
Step one is learning how our mouth makes the sounds. I show you where your tongue should be in your mouth to make both sounds correctly. Without this, you will never make the sound correctly.
In step 2 I compare 2 sets of words (minimal pairs). In each pair of words, each word is exactly the same apart from the /æ/ sound or /e/ sound which is different. By showing you the different English pronunciations in words where this is the only difference, you will be able to focus on hearing the sound correctly.
In step 3 I do a minimal pairs test, where I cover my mouth so you can’t see what sound I’m making, and test your ability to hear the 2 sounds. This is where you can test your recognition of both the /æ/ sound and /e/ sound, to see if you’ll be able to hear the difference in a conversation. If you can’t hear the difference, then you need to keep training these 2 sounds until you can.
It’s a very practical tutorial with highly effective exercises. If you put in the practice then you will make a big important improvement in your English pronunciation and English speech.

Finally, a tutorial that I could understand and follow. I did this in front of a mirror for, maybe a thousand times or more throughout an entire month. At first, my mouth wasn't used to this and I couldn't control my tongue to stay flat on the bottom, but after first week I started seeing some improvement. Now I can do this right at almost all the time.

I believe that æ has a shorter and longer version. The vowel in “had” is much shorter than the vowel in “sad.” “Bad” is short when it’s the past tense of “bid” (“He bad me good day”) and much longer when it means “not good.” “Glad” as a girl’s name is much shorter than “I’d be glad to do it.”
