Pronounce short E and short A vowel sounds (red and black)

The vowel sounds in the words red and black are often difficult to differentiate in English. Is it bad or bed? tan or ten?

If you want to learn to read transcriptions, I recommend learning the symbols you are most likely to use. For example, look at the symbols in your favourite dictionary.
Many dictionaries offer audio now, so it may not be as important as in the past.

To me hem and ham sound the same! that m sound changes the a sound. For an ESL student is really hard to tell'em apart!

Oh it's so hard to differentiate. Girl on the right says PAN and RAD quite different. In word PAN sound A sounds like in RED, but in PAN she opens her mouth wider and it sounds more like A.

Sounds can also be affected by the sounds that come before or after them. So the As in PAN and PAD may could slightly different.
