In this video I walk you through 3 simple steps to learn the difference between /æ/ Vs /a:/. These 2 English vowel sounds are incredibly difficult to differentiate and I hear people confusing the 2 all the time. It’s essential for both your English Speaking and English Listening to be able to tell the difference between both sounds. The reason why they are so difficult for so many people is that most languages don’t contain both of these sounds.
I break the video into 2 parts:
I start by giving you 3 simple steps to learn the difference between both sounds. Then I give you 5 sets of minimal pairs - words that are pronounced exactly the same apart from the vowel sound which is either /æ/ or /a:/. By giving you minimal pair examples, you get to see how both words sound, when they use the different sounds.
It’s a very practical tutorial with highly effective exercises. If you put in the practice then you will make a big important improvement in your English pronunciation and English speech.

Ideal if the IPA can be shown on the screen while illustrating the application of the sound in words.
Tks.
you're my hero. Every doubt I have on pronunciation, well, you're there with a video about that. Lovely
Hi Anto, I appreciate the message! What sounds are you finding challenging?
Glad you're finding the channel so useful, and good to have you here.
@@britishaccentmethod Well, to be honest, Connected speech (sometimes I talk like a robot), "Th" (thing) and "Dh" (the) (especially when I need to pronounce them fast) and Vowel sounds in general (my british friends often help me with that, but the thing is, I'm not able to recognize sounds with the same accuracy they have)
Hi there Michael😊 Thanks for making this professional & detailed explanation upon the 2 vowel sounds. This is Sid from Hong Kong. Cheers😊👍🥂
Hi Sid thanks for your message, I'm pleased the videos have helped you!

Welcome to the community!
Hi Michael, thanks a lot for the video. Your videos are very useful and helpful.
I was wondering if you could make a video teaching us how to tell the difference between/goose/ and /foot/ vowel sounds? I find the words "food" and "foot" sound very similar and rather tricky to differentiate them sometimes.
Hi Shirley, Thank you for your great feedback. You're right, it's difficult to tell the difference between these 2 sounds. I have filmed a tutorial and will post it for you at the end of this week.
Best,
Michael

Thanks Liliana
Thanks for your great tutorials!
When making the /æ/ sound is the tongue slightly pressing against the front teeth? or is it slightly pulled back? or?
The tongue is relaxed in front of bottom teeth for both sounds.
Pretty good.
thanks you so much
Hi Phu, You are most welcome! Michael

Hi Nicolas, I know that the short a is tough for spanish speakers (and many other languages too).
I just published a new video on this sound today, which I think will help you. Take a look here: czcams.com/video/i7NbjjE8qbM/video.html

Your videos are great - but may I ask you what kind of IPA transcription you are using?
Hi Juergen, I'm pleased the videos are helping you. I'm using the IPA transcription from the Cambridge Dictionary.

Can you give me imagine about elementary schools there
Rabee from Iraq
Hi Rabee, Welcome to the Channel, I would like to visit Iraq one day.
We call elementary schools 'primary schools' in British English, and children go to them from about the ages of 4-11 years old.

Very nice but too much noise of police van.Very good method of teaching.
for God's sake, don't make pronunciation videos outside! It is really bad idea. Do it inside, at home or in studio, please.
