WATCH THIS NEXT (British Accent Challenge): • Playlist
00:04 Introduction
01:47 Short Vowel sounds and how they're both difficult to pronounce
03:02 Three tips to help you pronounce the two sounds
The phonetic symbols for the a and u vowels sounds are /æ/ and /ʌ/.
In this tutorial I show you the 2 reasons why a and u pronunciation sound similar in English.
I then show you the 3 simple ways to tell the difference. Learning these will give you clear and confident English Pronunciation.
The 3 differences between a and u pronunciation are:
A pronunciation:
Lips - your lips should be stretched wide apart (use the drum stick technique to make sure your lips are wide enough)
Tongue - for 'a' pronunciation your tongue is right behind your teeth
Tongue Height - for 'a' pronunciation, the highest bit of your tongue is at the front of your mouth.
U pronunciation:
Lips - your lips are relaxed and closer together for the British u pronunciation
Tongue - Your tongue is further back in the mouth (watch how I pull my tongue back)
Tongue height - for u pronunciation, the highest part of my tongue is further back in the mouth.
Although a and u pronunciation can sound similar, by understanding the 2 things that make these English vowels similar, and the 3 things that make them different, you will develop clear a and u pronunciation...
And a clear British Accent.

I don't think anyone can explain this better than you sir ,,watching in 2022 ,,, I am shocked how perfectly you are making these sounds offcourse you are native ,, like I am shocked after watching a magic trick infront of my eyes ,, something performed so beautifully , perfectly and comfortably.❣️
It will gift me that I have been waiting for past 27 years. Thanks a lot sir. You are my true teacher.

You are such a professional. Your tutorials are so much different and better from others, obviously made by amateurs who probably think "English is my mother tongue, let me teach pronunciation though I don't know how, so just listen and repeat after me".))) That's not working.
I learned so much from you! Thanks Michael. My dream is to reduce accent with a teacher like you. But can't afford it yet.
Hello Michael, Your explanation of difference /æ/ and /ʌ/ with the tongue is brilliant. Thanks a lot. Regards, Edward

Hi Susan, you're welcome! I'm pleased it's helped so much!
Michael
very clear explanation!thanks😊
Thanks!
Brilliant! Thank you!
As a non-native english speaker, who has lived in the south of England for ~10 years, it's pretty clear that English has the oddity that is EXTREMELY rich in the usage of vowels in ways that other languages don't even have (e.g. most "a" sounds being similar or it just doesn't matter which version you make) and at the same time English lacks some consonant sounds.
Praiseworthy effort by you.
Thanks.
Thank you very much!
This is what I need to teach sir. Thank you

You're welcome! I'm glad it helped :D
Great 😍
Thanks bro
thank you very much!
I also like to compare it with the situation when your doctor asks to open your mouth. So the sound /æ/ when you open it widly and you show your throat to the doctor so he/she would be abale to see it clearly. And if this is about the sound /ʌ/ you open your moth, but you hide your throat behind your tongue (you don't show throat)
Omg thank you so much. Spanish is my first language and I've always struggled with these two sounds! To me they were basically the same. I think I've learnt now. Thank you. Lorena.
Do you use the first a in Spanish or the Second.?
@@sthenes1None of them. In Spanish, A is pronounced like the O in owl (which is pronounced ah-wool).
👏👏👏👏👏👏‼️💕Great,from Spain🎉🎉👏👏👏👏
Excellent video !
Thank you very much!
Amazing man!!!
Legend! Thank you for all the comments!

Sir your classes so amazing
Hi Shivakumar, thanks and welcome to this channel! Michael
Could you make a video on modern received pronunciation accent's intonation with some examples? I'm really looking forward to it.
Hey Sam, did you see the video I published yesterday on Prince Harry's English - Apart from a few examples where he now uses American pronunciation, his English is a great example of Modern RP - and I highlight how you can do the same in the video. Check it out here (I think you'll like it!): czcams.com/video/4C2zzHFcuFk/video.html
Michael
Greattttttttttttttt no words
Tell me one think does google translate or google speech uderstand native English speakers or no? I I spent 3 days of training with these /\ sound but it doesn't understand me.
It understands when I say cub or cut but when I pronounce bud or crust it doesn't.
When I say crust it translates as craft.
Bud - bad or but.
I'm so tired, I have no problems with æ and ä sounds but /\ just kills me.
Also when I pronounce luck it says lock.
👍👍👍
You are a very good and analytical teacher. But some was with ancient Greek and today we only use one alpha. I don't know if is the first that you explain, ruther is the second, pub, cut, not cat.
Super
Thanks Angel, It's great to hear you enjoyed it!
