    Yes, here we have the razzle-dazzling conclusion to the pink bathroom saga. When I first bought this house I came upon this pink mid century bathroom - preserved in its original form, with virtually no deterioration. In this video I go through the process of decision making, choosing what to replace and what not to replace, and ultimately, how to preserve a gem like this while also bringing it into the 21st century. I go over tiling a new floor, bathtub painting, installing a new mix valve, building a new cabinet, replacing a toilet, replacing a bathroom exhaust fan, removing sliding glass doors, and installing a new light fixture. Strap on in boys and girls, because this is the chapter to bring the bathroom tale to a close.

    Oh yeah. This is grandma's bathroom alright.
    I came upon stewardship of this pink mid century bathroom when I bought my first house. What ensued was a long process of decision making and a long list of projects over the last two years, most of which were accomplished over winter break recently. All in all, I estimate $1200 were spent on supplies and materials. I'm not a contractor, in fact most of my skills were developed only out of necessity. As an additional side note, my SO is a designer/architect, which of course made the cohesion and overall look of this project possible. Many of the tools and supplies I bought I have a link to in the description. The rest is straight out of Home Depot.

    Love this video. I am also a 30 year old boomer who loves mid century design, even grandma's charming bathrooms. We are salvaging a 60s bathroom right now from my late father in law who smoked in every room in the house... won't be able to save as much as I'd like, but we will be keeping the purple cast iron tub (but not painting it!). Appreciated watching your take on home diy with familiar internet humour and mutual disgust for modern "home renovation" nightmare vids

      Thank you, you are truly a woman of culture. That's a wise decision, cast iron tubs are worth a fortune, and if ever you change your mind about the color, I just learned about reglazing as an option, which seems superior to the paint job I did: www.thisoldhouse.com/bathrooms/21015122/refinish-your-cast-iron-tub

    I know exactly what removing the countertop/cabinet smelled like. I just took a laminate countertop off in the kitchen and bathroom from a 1960s house and even when I didn't use an oscillating tool there was a distinct smell of burnt plywood. No idea why. • @Bootstrappin
      @Bootstrappin  Před 3 lety +1

      Haha thanks. Couple of reasons - we wanted to keep some of the mid century original tiles, because they were quite nicely done. But also, painting tiles does not necessarily yield a very good result, since you're painting over the grout too. In a way, the paint then takes so many features out of the tiles, it's almost like they merely become a suggestion of tiles instead of actual tiles.

    it broke my heart that you removed those tiles. Why not just reglaze it?

    • @Bootstrappin
      @Bootstrappin  Před 3 lety +1

      Reglazing is (in my opinion) a bandaid solution. It doesn't last very long, and I also think that painting over the grout lines just looks really strange. In the end, we kept the things we liked, and got rid of the things we didn't.

    If you ever sell the home to a period buyer, those post Millennium sinks are non-original detractors and getting ripped right back out as first order of business.

      @@ryanglaser5336 guess that makes sense. Sold it a few years back, didn't seem to harm the price. Cleaning is straightforward, though in hindsight I'm not sure we wound up liking the bowls - they don't function as good in practice as they look.

    Well, the floor and tub look nice when you are done. Can't say much more .... Well, I did enjoy the narration, bit overall, the horrid wall tile, ugly new vanity and the fact that you removed the sliding shower door (The only part that should have stayed other than the cast iron tub) kind of ruined the whole thing.

    Very nicely done man, but the color of the old tile still doesn’t match the color of the floor tiles, vanity and tub. That’s just my opinion, tbh you should have chose a different color them for the floor tiles and vanity that would have match the pink or repaint the pink tiles with something that will match the new colors you chose.

    You did a horrible job choosing sinks and counter top as well as floor choice. Looks worse then it was before except for tub and tub doors and hardware. It now looks cheesy and cheap.
