Painting tile floor and grout lines... a success!

  • It's been over a year since I painted our guest bathroom tile floor (time flies!) and almost 10 months since painting the tile floor in the kitchen... and now, I can add painting the tile floor at my friend's house to the list too!
    Last Friday and Saturday Emily and I (with a little help from her husband, Taylor) painted her bathroom ("Glam Room") floor and took it from the classic beige tile to white and gray. I mean, who doesn't love a white, bright bathroom, right?
    I let her borrow my drill brush beforehand so she could clean the floor and sent her to Home Depot to get some Krud Kutter, paint brushes, and rollers.

    PAINTING YOUR TILE FLOOR? Here are my top tips:
    • Clean your floors really well with Krud Kutter - the CLEANER & DEGREASER kind, that's important. Your floor needs to be super clean so the paint can stick to it.
    • Wear clean socks! If you leave the room during the painting process, change your socks (because if you have pets, you probably picked up some hair along the way). Also, after your first coat, the floor will be a funny texture (I don't want to say "sticky" because it's not sticky), and I've found that wearing socks and sitting on towels helps.
    • Charge your dust-buster before you start... you'll still be using it often
    • The paint can says you only need one base coat. That's not true, especially if you do a lighter color! It also recommends one top coat, I've always done two of that as well.
    • After your FIRST coat of the base "color," you have to wait SIX hours before doing a second coat. If you decide to do any more after that though (like adding a pattern, painting the grout, etc.) you only have to wait ONE hour. The first coat just needs extra time to set.
    • If you plan to do two top coats, you have to wait ONE hour after the first to apply the second. BUT, you must do the second top coat within 24 hours of the first. AND THEN... once you do your final top coat, you can't touch/walk on the floors for 24 hours, and you can't use any cleaning products on it for 7 days.

    My mother used to use shoe polish on the grout. She was a cleaning maniac&her house was
    always immaculate. She even cleaned before the cleaning lady came! That bathroom tile was the whitest in town (

    It’s the grout that’s a pain in the keester. I’ve done it years ago the darken light grout in a tiny bathroom and it held up really well in a home with one bathroom. Great job ladies. Oh, by the way whoever laid that tile in her bathroom did a perfect job. That work has held up really well.

    • @conniepleasantnails
      @conniepleasantnails Před 2 lety

      @@tomiep6880 I painted the grout in my old bathroom. There is a product specific for this at Home Depot. I had beige ceramic tile with light grout and I painted the grout a medium brown. The grout is made of a very textured grittiness so the paint adhere very well. I never had to redo it and while I was doing it I immediately wiped off any excess that was on the tile so it wouldn’t adhere to the tile. It made the tile work look more finished and not just like dirty grout. It lasted for years until I sold that home.

    Use a trim board instead of tape. They have a handle and about 2 feet wide. You can cut then down as short as you want. You just walk it against the edge of the trim or wall while you are painting with your other hand. Does the same thing as painter's tape but takes 1/10th the amount of time.

      This is at a friend's house... but I can tell you my kitchen that I did almost a year before Emily's bathroom is holding up great 2 years later... and we have 2 dogs (one being a Great Dane) and they go in/outside every day through the kitchen. So if nothing has happened at this point, I think we're in the clear haha

      Yep, this is Rustoleum Home, meant specifically for floors. Check description for all products I used :-)

    Looks amazing! Question though - Seeing that the existing grout lines were already grey in color - Couldn't you have just taped over them before you painting the tile? Or would method made the edges prone to chipping?

    • @KatherineForbes
      @KatherineForbes  Před rokem

      that would've meant edging every single tile rather than using a roller for the whole floor!

    What brand of paint did you paint?

  • @DeepStack70

    Looks great! Questions: is the white paint the semi gloss or the matte? And the paint you used for the grout lines, is it regular paint or rust oleum floor paint? Thanks!

    • @KatherineForbes
      @KatherineForbes  Před 2 lety

      All paint used is from the Rustoleum Home line kit specifically for floors! The white/gray don't have a finish option, just the top coat (not included in video) does... which I picked matte.

    Hello, thank you for this nice video! Do you think this paint can work on tiles as well? I think I have the same floor tiles as yours, but on the walls I have those rectangular tires. Thank you!

      Just note, even though it works on tile... it's not meant for shower walls!

    This looks really nice. How is cleaning it though? Any chemicals too harsh or recommended to stay away from?

    • @KatherineForbes
      @KatherineForbes  Před rokem

      I’ve had my kitchen floors painted for 2.5 years and they’ve held up great to many cleaners, dogs, renovation, etc.

    I would have did the grout lines first, then used a roller to do the white on the tiles. It might save you a ton of time.

    • @KatherineForbes
      @KatherineForbes  Před 3 lety

      Thought about that too - but then I would've had to tape off all the tiles to get a clean edge with the roller which means I would've had to do it in multiple stages because the tape would overlap onto the next tile!

    A rigger line brush is best for the grout lines..
