Painting tile floor and grout lines... a success!

- It's been over a year since I painted our guest bathroom tile floor (time flies!) and almost 10 months since painting the tile floor in the kitchen... and now, I can add painting the tile floor at my friend's house to the list too!
Last Friday and Saturday Emily and I (with a little help from her husband, Taylor) painted her bathroom ("Glam Room") floor and took it from the classic beige tile to white and gray. I mean, who doesn't love a white, bright bathroom, right?
I let her borrow my drill brush beforehand so she could clean the floor and sent her to Home Depot to get some Krud Kutter, paint brushes, and rollers.

PAINTING YOUR TILE FLOOR? Here are my top tips:
• Clean your floors really well with Krud Kutter - the CLEANER & DEGREASER kind, that's important. Your floor needs to be super clean so the paint can stick to it.
• Wear clean socks! If you leave the room during the painting process, change your socks (because if you have pets, you probably picked up some hair along the way). Also, after your first coat, the floor will be a funny texture (I don't want to say "sticky" because it's not sticky), and I've found that wearing socks and sitting on towels helps.
• Charge your dust-buster before you start... you'll still be using it often
• The paint can says you only need one base coat. That's not true, especially if you do a lighter color! It also recommends one top coat, I've always done two of that as well.
• After your FIRST coat of the base "color," you have to wait SIX hours before doing a second coat. If you decide to do any more after that though (like adding a pattern, painting the grout, etc.) you only have to wait ONE hour. The first coat just needs extra time to set.
• If you plan to do two top coats, you have to wait ONE hour after the first to apply the second. BUT, you must do the second top coat within 24 hours of the first. AND THEN... once you do your final top coat, you can't touch/walk on the floors for 24 hours, and you can't use any cleaning products on it for 7 days.

My mother used to use shoe polish on the grout. She was a cleaning maniac&her house was
always immaculate. She even cleaned before the cleaning lady came! That bathroom tile was the whitest in town (
tiny hexagon tiles).
I love the fact that y’all both had so much patience and friends having fun!!!! The floor looks great!!!!!
That's Beautiful 😍. I have that ugly tile all through my house and since we can't move, I would love to try this!
Something about the gray grout just makes the white look so much brighter! 😍
Glad you like it too!
painting the grout lines a different color makes such a HUGE difference!! it makes the painted tile look a million times better. this turned out so good! nice work! saving for future reference 😊
Can you complete your work. What paint ?
This was brilliant! Great job young lady!!!!!
When painting the grout
lay a ruler or thin cardboard on tile, that way if it goes over. No worries👍☺️
I was going to comment on not taping until i saw you lay that razor sharp line. Boss level.
Loved your video. I am about to paint my kitchen tiles. It was encouraging 👏👏👏
Best thing ever going to remodel the bathroom thank youuuu
The gray walls with the gray grout looks so polished! Beautiful!
The gray floor paint and wall paint colors couldn't have been a better match - and it wasn't even on purpose! :-)
Hoe long will this paint stay on those tiles?
I always start a roller by saturating it with the paint, squeeze all the excess out, then roll it on the tray til it's painting more evenly. Saves a lot of time and pain!
Turned out beautiful ❣
Thanks, Sarah!
Wow! This looks great!
Just came across your video!! I’ve purchased all the products needed to start our master bath, we actually have hideous carpet in our bathroom, yes I said carpet & 3 different colors of tile!! Can you believe this is a custom home (05) lol!! Thank you for making this video!!
Wow. Looks so Great.
You guys are cute friends. Just came across this video while trying to figure out how to reno my moms pediatric clinic without blowing the budget- love your channel and these tips! Had NO IDEA you could paint over tile like this!? Thank you :)
Pretty cool product, isn't it!?
I'm motivated!! I'm going to paint my kitchen floor tiles black!! I think it'll look beautiful!
Thank you so much for the inspiration!!
I have watched several video, this is good paint and great ideas, however I would definitely recommend rugs for the high traffic areas to help this last longer !
Finally someone who also paints the grout lines!!! Thank you
I think it looks great solid! I know it must have taken a lot of time to do the grout lines, but i feel that one solid color would have been great!
This is really great!! We cannot afford to re tile our bathroom floor so I was looking for other options. My husband wants black and white checkers so we shall see how that goes lol I am contemplating black grout lines but will keep mowing it over. Thanks for the tips!!
Great video. Thank you for your time and effort to do that. Greetings from Croatia.
Thanks for watching!
"Get my groove." Too funny!😂
I have the same tile.I’m painting the grout black first and if I don’t like it I already have my gallon of paint ready to go.
Doing the grout lines nailed it.
Wow 👏 good job
bravooo KATHERINE BEAUTIFULL
I will this in my bathroom😍. Tq for showing it ❤
I'm moving into a house with ugly old brown floors in the bathroom. Definitely going to paint them. Thanks!
Emily is so pretty 😍
Lovely 😊
Beautiful
I love this! Going to do it some hot summer day in my basement bath.
Good luck!!
I like it when the ground lines are white too. So it is my taste :)
Agree with you. I like the full white too.
foil in the paint tray = BRILLIANT idea.
RIGHT!? Funny you say that because yesterday my husband reheated some leftovers on a tray in the oven without using foil and I was (jokingly) like "OMG you messed up my perfectly clean tray and didn't use tin foil!?!" haha tin foil makes easy clean up for so many things.
Turned out so nice. Now Emily needs the rust-oleum tub and tile refinishing kit for the brown tub and shower.
Me too!
Thank you for this.
OMG girls, don't be scared to get some paint on that roller. Haha
It was painful to watch
I don't know why I never thought of thos, thank you SO much for the inspiration. I have fake travertine in my bathroom that was installed in the early 90d and it has aged hideously. I'm excited for a challenge now!
Oh yay! Good luck... I think you'll love the fresh look :-) I know I do!
@@KatherineForbes then I just need to sort out the blue bathtub 😂
@@ThatBlondePerson haha! We had a tub reglazed in a previous house to get it back to white - totally worth it!
@@ThatBlondePerson Have your tub refinished, they have so many new things to take care of that now!!
You mam have talent! ❤️
Great tip to cut in on the grouting in both directions!
Glad you like that idea! It was a game changer once I figured that out 👍🏼
@@KatherineForbes Great job! I don't have a good pulse...so..I would use masking tape to do the grout lines
This is so cool,
Thanks! My floor are terrible, great instructions, I have to try this.
Good luck!
Wow!
Paint those floors, boo!
Ok now look out.. looking good 😂 going do mys
It’s the grout that’s a pain in the keester. I’ve done it years ago the darken light grout in a tiny bathroom and it held up really well in a home with one bathroom. Great job ladies. Oh, by the way whoever laid that tile in her bathroom did a perfect job. That work has held up really well.
How long did it last?
@@tomiep6880 I painted the grout in my old bathroom. There is a product specific for this at Home Depot. I had beige ceramic tile with light grout and I painted the grout a medium brown. The grout is made of a very textured grittiness so the paint adhere very well. I never had to redo it and while I was doing it I immediately wiped off any excess that was on the tile so it wouldn’t adhere to the tile. It made the tile work look more finished and not just like dirty grout. It lasted for years until I sold that home.
I love the look of stark white tile, looks so clean and polished. My grout is a nasty gray color and i hate it...it looks dingy and dirty. I know we all have different tastes and you all did a fabulous job. Def gonna try!
Good luck!
I agree with you. I prefer the white grout.
Love this so much! Can't wait to try mine. My bathroom is white with a lot of deep-ish aqua wall tiles and PALE aqua floor tiles. UGH! We call the bathroom 'The Swimming Pool'. There's only two of us, so not heaps of traffic. Please let me know if Emily's bathroom floor has held up really well? Thank you. from Oz
You’re hired👍🏽
I'm looking to paint a much larger area and not sure I have the patience to hand paint those grout lines - I do admit it looks amazing with the gray
It's definitely tedious!
Finally found the solution for my ugly tiles👌🙌
An angled paint brush (like a makeup brush) would be really helpful with the grout lines. The floor came out great! Can paint withstand shower grout? Thanks for making this!
Thanks! Unfortunately the paint is NOT recommended for in the shower.
Clorox toilet cleaner with spout top is really good for whitening shower tile grout ( if you have white grout 😊). It's the blue stuff. Let it sit a while. The blue doesn't stain.
Hola, hermoso trabajo 👍🇨🇴. En qué estado se conserva el piso? Se ha dañado la pintura?
Have ever tried grout pens? Great paint makeover! ❤
This looks awesome. I want the exact colors you did on this floor and it would match my bathroom perfectly. Just to clarify, did you do one or two base coats? And one or two top coats? Also the color is steam gray....not white?
Definitely two base coats and two top coats (I think the can says one but you can even tell in the video that one coat does not cover well enough). And yes, it LOOKS white, but it's called steam gray.
More paint!!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH 😭
Great video. The floor looks awesome! I've been wanted to do this to my kitchen and bbathroom floor. Do you need to seal it afterwards? Do you have to be careful what cleaning fluids you use on a painted tile floor?
Yes, the Rustoleum Home brand includes the base coat (color) and top coat. I opted for the matte top coat. And as far as cleaning, I use my swiffer or magic eraser for the tougher spots.
If you haven't already watched, there are a couple other videos on my channel that address both of these things :-) czcams.com/play/PLseNdEEEKpWXh0_QkD8kGYKtxdIb75hQE.html
Very nice what color paint is on the wall I love it
❤️
Hi! Do you have any idea how I can paint just the tiles and leave grout as is? I don’t know what roller can make that happen
Beautiful work... I'm in the middle updating the guest bathroom and going to paint the bathtub, wall tile and floor tiles. Check out rustoleum topside marine paints. I'm going to give it a try. When I was doing my research alot of diyers recommended it over the tile and tube products that are expensive and messy.
Hope your guest bath turned out exactly how you imagined! I haven't been brave enough to try the tub or sink paints/sprays yet!
How did this work out for you?
This is a great tutorial. We are up to the top coat - we just opened the can (labeled Top Coat/Matte) and it looks white. Does that sound right? Thank you.
Yep! Sorry, just saw this. It does look pretty milky and goes on somewhat white but clears when it dries. Guessing you already figured this out though ;-)
Blue Tape!!!!!!!!
I’d like to see it after a year or two of wear. I bet it peels/bubbles up.
No peels/bubbles at all! czcams.com/video/dfqCP5FyC_0/video.html&pp=sAQA
I did mine almost 4 years ago, no issues at all. Two bathrooms, high traffic too. I used chalk paint, and put polyurethane over it. Works perfectly.
Looks amazing one questions though, can you mop the floor like you would normally would? Or does it stain if you spill something ?
I've painted my kitchen floors and after almost 2 years it hasn't stained from anything... and I clean with a Swiffer mainly! czcams.com/video/cZZdZYeRH4c/video.html
Looks great! Can I ask if you can seal the tiles or do anything to help the paint hold up to cleaning and mopping? Thanks so much 😊
Yes I used the top coat that came with the Rustoleum Home floor paint kit! I mop, vacuum, sweep, swifter, and Magic Eraser clean my floors and it all works just fine!
How long does this paint hold up? What type of paint did you use?
It's been great! This update video was filmed earlier this year but honestly the floors haven't changed a bit since then :-) czcams.com/video/dfqCP5FyC_0/video.html
It looks very nice. My concern is ... how does it wear? Is it durable over time?
Held up for us!
I like the grout white better. Looks cleaner.
Keep a jar of thinner around to clean up mistakes. Relax and have fun with it.
I got a 3rd kitchen floor for ya lol
I'm interested l will try it, but which paint are you using
Use a trim board instead of tape. They have a handle and about 2 feet wide. You can cut then down as short as you want. You just walk it against the edge of the trim or wall while you are painting with your other hand. Does the same thing as painter's tape but takes 1/10th the amount of time.
Nice...thanks for the info!
What is a trim board? Sorry to be dense but can you clarify? As in, a base board?
I think a checkerboard pattern, gray and white, would have been classically beautiful and interesting. The base boards need painting in my bathroom too. Wouldn't you do them before the tile? Or no? The bright white on the floor makes the baseboards look kind of dirty.
How do the floors look today? You don’t have to seal after?
Nice work on Emmy’s #GlamRoom! How lucky is she to have such an amazing friend like you? I would be remiss if I didn’t add “very pretty” amazing friend! 😊
The floor looks awesome. What type of paint did you use?
Rust-Oleum Home - it's specifically for floors. Links for everything in the description :-)
What kind of paint did you use? And what sheen?
Is there any specific paint to use, or just any paint
It looks fantastic 🤩. What sort of paint dit you use for the grout lines? I’m about to paint the tiles in my toilet and I was wondering about how to leave the grouts.
Same paint as the white - all Rustoleum Home floor paint!
Is it bad to hurry the drying with a fan?
It looks fabulous, great job!! I'm thinking of giving it a go - if I use a light grey tile paint, do I absolutely have to paint grout lines? I HATE grout!!!!
I just painted solid gray in my kitchen - it's totally your preference.
Just came across your video…love the new floor but I think I like it better without the grey grout 😊
Looks awesome! Curious how it's held up after being walked on over the last year. 🤔
This is at a friend's house... but I can tell you my kitchen that I did almost a year before Emily's bathroom is holding up great 2 years later... and we have 2 dogs (one being a Great Dane) and they go in/outside every day through the kitchen. So if nothing has happened at this point, I think we're in the clear haha
@@KatherineForbes can you ask friend for us? Jk
Which type of paint you used?
What kind of paint did you use?
Do we use special paint that won’t gets erased by the water the bathrooms always get with shower and everything- waterproof paints?
Yep, this is Rustoleum Home, meant specifically for floors. Check description for all products I used :-)
Looks amazing! Question though - Seeing that the existing grout lines were already grey in color - Couldn't you have just taped over them before you painting the tile? Or would method made the edges prone to chipping?
that would've meant edging every single tile rather than using a roller for the whole floor!
What brand of paint did you paint?
Looks great! Questions: is the white paint the semi gloss or the matte? And the paint you used for the grout lines, is it regular paint or rust oleum floor paint? Thanks!
All paint used is from the Rustoleum Home line kit specifically for floors! The white/gray don't have a finish option, just the top coat (not included in video) does... which I picked matte.
Hello, thank you for this nice video! Do you think this paint can work on tiles as well? I think I have the same floor tiles as yours, but on the walls I have those rectangular tires. Thank you!
Just note, even though it works on tile... it's not meant for shower walls!
how did this hold up?
This looks really nice. How is cleaning it though? Any chemicals too harsh or recommended to stay away from?
I’ve had my kitchen floors painted for 2.5 years and they’ve held up great to many cleaners, dogs, renovation, etc.
I would have did the grout lines first, then used a roller to do the white on the tiles. It might save you a ton of time.
Thought about that too - but then I would've had to tape off all the tiles to get a clean edge with the roller which means I would've had to do it in multiple stages because the tape would overlap onto the next tile!
A rigger line brush is best for the grout lines..
how the paint lasts after a year?
Do you no what I can use for worktops for kitchen not shour if paint will cope the hot coffees on the sides and the water from sink
Not sure, I've just been sticking to the floors with this paint since that's what it's made for!
