Install shower tile and grout. Install floor tile and tile baseboard. Plumbing. Redo plumbing and install a new shower and sink faucet.
I filmed this the only way i could ... as someone who has never done it before. We made mistakes as we went along but overall it turned out great. We are very happy with the result and saved a lot of money doing it by ourselves.
Hopefully you learn something by watching these series of video's. Let me know anything i missed, the many things we got wrong, and something you recommend to make remodeling your bathroom easier.

So never occurred to you to cut it with a grinder first? This is more of a video on how not to do this job.
U should add a grinder to that list
I respect your work ethic and motivation. I am not a rookie at this type off work. Furthermore, I have repaired work done by Jack Legs like the people that have negatively criticized your job. It is obvious within their posts that they are clueless. When a person tears someone down without offering helpful advice that is an indicator of a high level of stupidity. Thanks for sharing your project. Ignore the idiots!
hammer head jack legs 🤣
Can anyone tell me if you have to shut off the water and the power in order to do a bathroom renovation?
@@seasonneverstop1878 no not until you start messing with the plumbing or wiring. If you replace the valve which I would suggest you do since you got it all open and it is really easy to replace. When I do mine I am going to replace my copper pipes with pex and put a valve on each line so in the future I can shut the water off to the tub and still have water going to sink and toilet.
One tip, don’t use silicone caulk for the cement board joints, silicone is only for final use on mostly inside corners, drywall mesh joint tape with thin set mortar is best. The silicone doesn’t allow a bond between the area applied and the tile mortar creating weak spots later on.
Dude. I wanted to tell you THANK you for doing this series. I'm getting ready to tackle a very similar project, and I couldnt find anything as detailed as your vids. Just thank you man.
I would recommend to anyone when remodeling or demo use a mask or respirator because depending on when the house was built their could be asbestos. The heavy stuff behind the tile its green board also line the the tub w industrial plastic or garbage bags
Hey if you dont do this every day a little asbestos is not a big deal. Mask is nice if you dont want concrete boogers though!
You can appreciate a guy like this. Thumbs UP
This is where CZcams shines - awesome vid thanks.
I can’t imagine trying to do a video and do the work at the same time!
Hats off to you! Thanks for the video!
2 tools that would’ve saved you a ton of work: sawzall with demo blades, and a bosch demo hammer with tile chisel.
I’ve redone a 60’s bomb shelter tile shower for one daughter, and just helped redo one for another. It’s a lot of work - my hat’s off to you. I too am self-taught, here’s a few things I’ve learned. Get a drywall T-square for cutting your backer board - easier, faster layout (no string-line needed), and much easier to make that first score. I don’t like to cut or grind hardibacker because of all the dust, but for straight cuts with a 4”+ off-cuts you can just score it deeply, and snap it. I use a couple of fairly large C-clamps as “handles” to get leverage on the off-cut, and break it off in 18-24” lengths. For long thin off-cuts, use a circ saw and a cheap thin-rim carbide framing blade to create less dust than a grinder or tile/masonry blade.
When you open up the walls, add 2x4’s as needed to allow you to screw the backer no less than 1” from the edge. Depending on what’s used behind the old tile, there might not be any blocking for the new backer. The bath we just did had a “foam” backer, glued to the original drywall (yes, from the 1960’s), which came down easily, but we had no blocking. Older tubs usually have the upper edge “rolled up” to shed water. You have to get the backer to the top edge of this, or your board - and tile eventually - will kick out along the edge of the tub, and likely break the backer when you screw it down tight.
I agree it’s best not to caulk the interior joints (you force thinset into the joint when applying the fiber tape), but I caulked all the perimeter and corner joints. Pay special attention to the tub joint. I cleaned the tub edge with alcohol before caulking. You want to slightly overcaulk and then run the joint with a finger to actually ‘make’ the seal.
I would not use Redguard for just a surround. Water will only get behind your backer at the edges and corners and a good caulk and grout job (and sealing) will be sufficient. No need to worry about your screw heads as they’ll be covered (and sealed) by the thinset.
For making your plumbing holes, a cheap “step” drill bit from HF works well - I keep my holes as small as possible to make it easier to seal around the plumbing (the easiest and most likely place for water to get behind the wall). The step bit lets me start small, and work my way up as needed (hole size depends mostly on how accurately you measure and mark the centers).
I appreciate this vid because I want to do this and have been putting it off for years. Also the guy did mention that he is NOT a professional. 👍👍 for motivation, effort, and willingness to share such learning experience!
Awesome idea dude and I love how well you explained everything with such fine detail. Great work and thanks
Dave, you ROCK! Thank you for all this work with the videos and stages of demo/construction. I'm about to enter into the Demo part. Wish there was a way to save tile..... Thanks - Ken in Hawaii Oct 2017
Thanks for sharing. My bathroom literally looks like this. Good stuff 👍🏼
I appreciate watching someone who doesn't know what they are doing work. Reminds me of me! Ha
GREAT video. I appreciate your 'everyman' point of view. Very helpful!
Love this video. He's just like the 90% of us who want to save money and DIY.
Wow, this is an excellent series. Thank you.
Thank you for your patience, and excellent ability to simplify things ! It is very refreshing being a older individual trying to remodel ( have never ever remodeled anything but I am determined) a mobile home, as much for sentimental reasons and to live in. I appreciate the detail you put into everything! Especially the tools ! Its nice to see what to expect after opening up a wall or a floor. Or for that matter working with the electrical components in the wall. PS Big sorry to my neighbors ahead of time. Just kidding and seriously Thank you !
Did the same method of demo on my bathroom, "hammer grids" through all of the material worked best for me as well. Good vid, keep it up 👌
Im a DIY girl i think your video was very helpful thank you for the new ideas on how to do this, im not looking forward to the plumbing job i gotta do but rest excited.
Excellent video. Thanks for posting. As a new homeowner and looking to save as much money as I can while making my new home ours, your video is both informative and inspiring.
Thank you so much for sharing the process, mistakes and all.
This is a really good video I'm feeling inspired. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see the rest of them.
Great video. and amazing putting the tools used and links up there too. awesome : )
As I'm watching you take down first board, I'm like....dude, wear some gloves. The tile glaze is razor sharp & will definitely cut ya if not careful. I'd have to say that most ppl who do this the first time, will learn this lesson, if not in the biz. Wearing gloves is a must to protect those hands. Glad didn't need stitches.
Cheers, A
Thank you for your work.
This video and all the content is a gold mine!!! wow!!
Thank you so much for posting this!
Lath & plaster...whew! Lots of work & heavy. I'd need help, for sure. Getting ready for this in my flooded basement. Thank you for the video.
You made few mentions of the cement board you were removing and the metal mesh behind the cement board. This tile system, used from the 30's until the early 60's did not use a cement board. The expanded steel lath was nailed directly to the studs, followed by 2 brown coats (rough coats) of mortar and finished with a smooth finish coat before applying the Thinset and tile. It was a very heavy, labor intensive and highly skilled installation. Although these old bathrooms are outdated, you will rarely find a cracked or separated tile anywhere.
Excellent point. I have two 50 year-old bathrooms with outdated tiles. The tiles are still like new, not one chip. Grout is still in decent shape. I had an old inspector who knew the original builder, and he said he was a real craftsman. I've decide to keep the tiles up- just too much labor and expense involved. Hoping to restain the 8ft long vanity, doors, and drawers, replace drawer slides, new counter top, toilet, wall paper, flooring and bbhw heating.
Thanks for this video . I can't afford to hire someone . This helped so much
Ah, 3:35, relief sets in. I'm watching you demo without gloves and I just started counting down until you cut your hand. Thanks for sharing your work. I think it shows someone who might be timid about a project like this that they can do it.
Ken Howard
Yeah. It’s easy to forget ceramic tile is basically glass. And after I tear out that mesh, my arms look like I went three rounds with an alley cat.
I hear you! I did the same demo a few years back (with gloves, lol) and no matter how careful, my arms and legs had cuts all over them from that damn mesh.
GREAT WORK
Great video!
Sledge hammer and a SawZall quickly becomes your best friend!!! ALWAYS use gloves even when you don't think you'll need them. I did the same thing during demo. Should've gotten stitches but I just pulled it back together with steristrips 😵😅
Lmfao “ I think I have to put some gloves on “ been there so many times funny to see other people do it tho good job keep it up
Well done video man, thanks
i have the same construction in my bathrooms. A beast to remove, no cracked tile so the method works , plumb flat and square walls. Much better than foam walls but it lasts longer than any human will live. I think it might be bullet proof .
I have a 1962 bath with that same glorious green tile! One thing to think about when taking the walls down in big chunks like that, when they come down they can hit one of the handles or copper pipes. I got lucky and it was just a close call - but in the next bath, I removed all the handles, shut off the water and bled the lines dry, and propped up a few 2x4s to use kinda like a slide because I didn't have any help. Was WAY easier. Hope that helps someone :)
I've had the idea of hiring someone to come (spray paint? 😂 ) recolor the tile.
Diane Boles Really good advice.
I did that and regretted it. Wish I had just torn it out.
Already excited
Came across your video.. decided to watch..
And a tip, a 2x4 works great to rip walls off, tile or not . (Less energy wasted also).
But as it seems.. I am over 2yrs late lol
Thank you so much
Thanks for this info!! 😀
That was some nice lookin gold tile
Great video, shared a lot of great information!
For the hardie backer, score it and pop it with a strait edge
Great
Smart man nice and easy
Good video thanks
I just used a circular saw to cut the hardiebacker. Messy but that was the only way for me. 12MM hardie does not snap like 6mm
Those super duty gloves are essential
Use a grinder with a metal and tile blade. Easy peasy.
I’ll be using a pry bar and reciprocal saw
good job
Thank you so much for making this video! Extremely helpful!
I know that was hard. Good work!
Just one thing, I would put plywood 1/4" on the walls around the bathtub first and you can use silicone on it, to plug the gaps, then put on special water proof plasterboard (Gyprock), the advantage is if you have to drill and install a rack, sower doors etc. you have a good base.
Use heavy duty leather gloves. Tile is razor sharp when it breaks and can cut you down to the bone really easily.
Edit: Thanks for proving my point. :)
Mud set showers are tuff to get out!
that 10 second blurb at the beginning, that looks just like the greenish tile i need for my bathroom repair. still got it?
Dude, I appreciate all the left in mistakes and surprises and awkwardness. This would so be me and then some.
I use a 10# hammer, grinder, buckets, get rid off the tub, demo everything, use long sleeve shirt, , safety first.
in 10 hrs. I can demo and install a acrylex surround and ready to go.
Never hang wall board vertical, you make it a lot more difficult to attach and finish.
I been wanting to do that to to my shit brown tiles since 1994:) Pink, blue, green, yellow, any color would have been better, the builder probably saved money on a color that wasn't selling.
zzubuzz why it had to be that brown color that wasn’t selling? 😂
The previous handyman did a great job for this shower, should leave it alone.
you were lucky mate, i sliced through the tendons in one hand doing that.
Dave,
Why didn't you install a moisture barrier (aquabar or black tar paper) between the backer board and the wood framing. You need one to prevent mold or mildew to start growing in the wall cavity because water will get through the grout and behind the tile. Now the backer board is wet and so are the studs with no way to dry.
He put a red guard lmao. The red guard will make the backboard waterproof and so no water will ever get to the past the backerboard.
Lath and steel meash sucks! Been there done it. Except it also had three layers of drywall plus tile. When ever I do demo it's T&M always!
It was definitely the glaze on the tile that cut you. It can be surgical sharp.
A like, just for the intro...
Awesome video series. I have about a month to tackle my first bathroom! Is there anywhere I can connect with you to ask a couple questions?
I can try to answer stuff here. I'm definitely just a novice though.
Is mesh necessary?
Interesting in-wall speaker at 5:07
we need some echo music towards the bathroom hahahhahaha
Is that what that is? I was wondering about that
It is in the next room, now you see it because of the demolition.
I was thinking GLOVES right before ya got that cut.
When was your home built? Mine was built in 1976 and I’ve got that ugly green tile in two bathrooms of my house as well.
good for you,, I'm gonna wath and see what I can take from it.. because I am in need of new bath but don't have 10,000+ to do it.. So Im gonna see what we can do ourselves.
Wow, you took the time to model your bathroom. Pretty cool. What software was that?
Sketch-up. It's pretty good and easy to learn. And free.
4:38 not wire cutters those are tin snips! cutting wire with them will ruin them be careful.
Did that shower have any water proofing besides the tiles? Like a membrane? Looks like it stayed fairly dry behind the old shower.
Nope, just the wire mesh, mortar and tile. And yes it didn't leak. But the mortar was pretty thick, like 1" if i had to guess.
Im about to start a big bathroom remodle and i would love that tool you used to make that line at 8:55 it wasnt in the description does anyone know the name of it
Backerboard Scoring Knife amzn.to/2VSXNYx
Carbide Tip. $14
Great video. How many days did it take to complete your 2 and half bathrooms?
A few months. But that was working on weekends or after work. We did one room, took a break for a few months, then did the other ones.
Just learned that from another DIY, get gloves. Love to beable to pull whole panel out, not happening yet.
Someone just liked me, I checked back and here's an update, at first I was chipping away at single tiles, but finally got whole panels to move, basically got a vertical hinge going. Weighed one piece, it was 60# and another one was larger than that, so be wary of how heavy the combined cement board and tiles weigh, that is be ready for when it breaks free and not in an awkward position to lower it to the floor. Anyway, demo done, the steel tub fit neatly into my Maxda CX5 to take to the dump.f 350# of demo to the dump, cost me about $13.50 in tipping fees. (but 350# for just the tile and backer from the shower! Even more really) I did buy gloves before I started the tile demo.
Can anyone tell me if you have to shut off the water and the power in order to do a bathroom renovation?
I never seen wire on the wall , wow . I will cement wall for shower
How long u had that water running..
Chipping hammer helps
Looking to renovate my new home but worried about asbestos. Did you test anything before? All research points to not doing it yourself, but after seeing this I am really inclined to just dig in
Not sure about asbestos. I would check the age of your house and when asbestos was outlawed.
I was doing mostly interior walls - no insulation.
And it's not super complicated, but takes time to learn the first time.
Can anyone tell me if you have to shut off the water and the power in order to do a bathroom renovation?
It depends. If you are ripping out tile where there are electrical wires, they ya probably. If you are plumbing new faucets or shower fixtures, then ya probably. There's the circuit breaker and main shut-off somewhere (in a house it's usually in the basement). But there's also usually a water valve for the shower in a wall somewhere or underneath a sink.
I didn’t see a vapor barrier install. Did you not add it?
Karla Carranza - RedGard replaces the poly. Lacticrete 9235 is a better product and eliminates the need for silicone caulk in joints and permits you to grout over them instead for a more uniform look. RedGard or Lacticrete may be used in lieu of poly, not with it. Both are better than poly, imo.
That shower will leak like a sieve. You should apply a membrane to the entire shower floor and walls not just the joints and screw heads
That silicone will absolutely fail. Give you alot of credit for being curious and taking this on yourself. Biggest fail point in a shower tub is the corners and the joint where wallboard meets the tub. Keep and eye on those. Cement board sucks to work with foam board is the way to go these days.

crowbar is your best friend
You definitely don’t need a hammer drill for plasterboarding I use a 12v driver with no problems. Only brick and concrete needs hammer drill, you don’t even need an impact driver for plasterboard over wood studs .
What video tool do you use to do that speedup effect?
I edit all my video's with Camtasia
Thanks. I was hoping you wouldn't say that. :)
That stuff is no picnic to remove 🤨 (did you have a tile concrete floor as well 🤔
Next time use a crowbar or wonder bar next time when pulling off drywall, your back and shoulders will thank you.
Wears your dust mask man silicosis ain't no joke. Also a impact wrench is strong and lighter then a hammer drill
Where's*
thanks for posting this
Debra Popplewell No problem
Does anyone have an idea if you can just remove the tiles without destroying the wall in the bathroom?
Impossible. Those tiles are the walls. I have same thing from 1953.
u know they make the durock board 5 ft because the tub is 5 ft u should put them horizontally the length of the tub and on the shower body side put them vertically
