- Step back in time with me as I experience a classic straight razor shave at New York Shaving Company, a barbershop preserving the vintage shaving traditions of the 19th century. This old-school barbershop specializes in hot towel shaves using traditional straight razors for an incredibly close shave, with hand-whipped hot lather.
They also hand-make all their own shaving supplies in-house using classic techniques and ingredients. In this video, watch as the owner John whips up creamy, luxurious lather using hair brushes and artisanal shaving soaps made right on the premises.
From the custom-blended shaving products to the antique barber chairs, everything about this shave harkens back to classic barbershops of the past. That was fun. I grew up in a barber shop. My father was a barber for 60 years, and would approve of the shave. My dad prided himself on his use of a straight razor, and his technique. He was an absolute magician. This was a pleasant reminder of those times :)
I EXPECTED something like in this video when I went for a shave during my vacation in Cambodja.
Boy, was I wrong!
Everything still was hurting like a b*tch 4 days later!
They sprayed my face with some peppermint water, then put some cheap Gillette foam on it (the red can, the old-fashioned sort) and then the woman took a straight razor with a VERY shaky hand and carefully tried to shave me.
No hot towels, no hot water or anything, just the peppermint water and Gillette foam!
My moustache was too hard for her to shave and she kept doing my throat/lower jaw area over and over and over and over and over again to get it somewhat smooth.
Everything was intensely red when she finally decided to stop, and my moustache area still wasn't shaved at all.
She put cucumber all over my face and throat, but wow: did I regret ever sitting down there!

Yeah but in that touristic area it's all massage parlours, bars with hot chicks and hot looking female barbers.

Lot of people appreciate a good shave with a straight razor, but hot dang the maintenance deserves an equal amount of respect. Double props to your father.
@@Proxyincognito Just think..... my dad uses a *real* straight razor. Single edge, and three inches long. Leather strap used for honing the blade. It's an insane amount of prep on every shave :)

I’ve been to many barbershops but this one takes professionalism to another level.
The illusion of luxury to take money out of your pocket.
It’s about the experience and service.
I wet shave almost everyday, but there's nothing more relaxing than letting a professional do it for you!
The finished look is simply incredible.

Personally I think an unshaven look is better forhim, a bit less babyface.

@@KevinOnEarth_disagree. He should lean into the “baby face”. He has a nice youthful look, and he has neither the hair density nor coverage for growing out his facial hair.
I’m 50 now and I haven’t had a wet shave in 30 years . When I watch these videos maybe it’s something I need to try once again .I haven’t even been to a barber for at least 22 years. It’s just something I do all myself

Unfortunately, I look better at my age (57) with facial hair though once in a while I’ll do a blade shave in the shower. Love the feeling of being clean shaven & I’m pretty good at it. I’m a Jersey guy, may need to stop by this shop & have a professional do it.
This is how I shave myself. I have yet to have a barber shave me, though I would love to try it. I use Japanese Kamasori and traditional straight razors that I hone and strop myself. Once you shave like this you won’t go back to cartridge shavers.

He knows what to do exactly, never seen a closer shave from other barbers. He left you looking sharp in a way that illuminates what people from last century meant by looking sharp. Incredible

There are levels to every service John the owner of that barber shop I feel is a genuine artist and a true professional of his craft there is an art to grooming that I feel is taken for granted. Honestly if i could afford it i would be going to this caliber of barber every time i needed a haircut becuase you are not only paying for the experience but also the talent of the barber.
Man... I haven't had a straight razor shave in near 20 years. At home I've gone electric, but would love this experience again. Props for the nose hair trimming.

I absolutely love old school barbershop's. A cut and shave can take an hour. Well worth whatever the charge

There needs to be a return to more such Barbershop's. Bring back a sense of style and pride in appearance.
I sometimes get a very reduced variant of this, since I will always have a beard and mustache to remember my son who passed away long ago. I've grew it out when he left, and will stay true to him to the end. I just do the cheeks and the neck. Just something to clean up the area from time to time.

Ha! That’s great… I only had someone shave me once… In 1971 I was deployed to Cambodia… a local did razor shaving so I thought I would try it. My radar went off just as the lights in his eyes went out. I was able to break away without being seriously hurt. I couldn’t consider trying it again. You look great!!! I’m a 42 year old female in Queens, and I wouldn’t mind going to a place like this, lol. I wonder if they’ve ever done ladies - no, I don’t have a beard . . . but I know a great facial when I see one! I wouldn’t mind letting these guys do my face and hair! My mom and dad brought me to a barber when I was a kid - usually tagged along to get my hair trimmed when dad or my brother went to the barber, lol. It was old Russian guys running the shop in the 70’s and 80’s. I’d be totally comfortable in a place like this!

One of the experiences I really enjoy the older I get is a good old fashioned shave and haircut, like this. They are getting harder and harder to find. I try to get one done at least 5-6 times a year if I can, just to relax and get myself and my hair and facial hair back top condition.
Never had a barber shop shave, except for the razor trim on the sideburns and back of neck. After watching this video I want to to this barber ad at least experience it once in my life. Quite a professional barber.
