  • In this tutorial video, I briefly overview the proper technique and easiest way to start, allowing beginners to feel confident with their first straight razor shave.
    Several tips to keep in mind:
    - Make sure you have a sharp straight razor
    - Keep the spine of the razor close to your skin, at all times
    - Go slow, and be cognizant of what you're doing
    - Start by only shaving your cheeks with the growth, and avoid your side burns for the first several shaves
    - Once confident enough, you can shave your neck, in the with the growth, north to south, pass

    What helped me to learn the proper holds and how to feel where the blade was on my face was to use a butter knife. Use the spine side of a butter knife and slide that along your face as if it was a straight razor. Do this until you are able to maintain a 30 degree angle across the different parts of your face and neck. Learn to feel where the end of the blade is, this will keep you from slicing your ear when you are using the razor. Learn to hold the "razor" (butter knife) with a delicate but still in control grip that uses just your finger tips. Once you think you've got it, lather up and practice some more with the butter knife; this time learning how to stretch your skin and how much you can shave before you have to wipe lather off your "razor".
    Best wishes from Phoenix, AZ.

      @pfv3462 Před rokem +3

      You can also use a chavette without a blade to practice, then a blade from a safety razor that has already been used a number of times in the chavette and keep practicing!
      A chavette is not expensive and you learn to hold it comfortably against your face

    Before you start your shave should you do the.hot towel thing?

    My adventures with shaving...started preeeetty young, When I was a kid I had a toy shaving kit that had a plastic double edge safety razor..this was back in the 90's btw. My grandpa taught me how to shave using that but he moved on to cartridge razors and later on when I actually needed to start shaving I did too. Then one day I decided to try the ol' DE razor again and pulled out my great grandpa's adjustable slim one from Gillette that he had way back in the day. Never went back to cartridges after that and stopped using canned shaving cream that has propellant. Then 3 years ago I got my first hot towel straight razor shave...hard as hell to find a place that does it where I live and there are only 3 of them. I enjoyed the shave so much that even though I had decided to grow a beard again after the major lockdowns calmed down in my state I bought a straight razor with replaceable blades to keep everything lined up and neat...been using one ever since.
    Though I DID make a big mistake not long ago and got a little careless...now I have a vertical scar on my face the length of a DE razor blade from a bad angel, it's not deep enough to need stitches but it's gonna take awhile to fade if it ever does...I'll likely be in my late 40's before it fades to the point it's hard to see without the right light...overall though? I have had LESS cuts and nicks with the straight edge than I had with the safety razor lol, and nobody taught me how to shave with one...I learned by watching ASMR shaving videos and picked up techniques from professional barbers in those vids to get the general idea....rest was all trial and error...staring with a DE safety razor did help though as I had experience with a single blade rather than the multi ones favored by cartridges.

    I have a very sharp jawline and getting that section around the jaw bone where your neck meets your cheek is near impossible and I always end up cutting myself because it's like trying to shave a 90 degree slope lol. But one tip I heard and works for frequent shavers is to use hair conditioner instead of shaving foam or gel, if your face hair isn't long and just stubbly it can help a lot.

My straight razor is sitting in the far back corner of my drawer. Once and a while I get a glimpse of it and am overcome with a sense of abject terror! Now however after watching your video I think I'm gonna give it another shot. I will take your advice and just tackle my cheeks. I think that was excellent advice. straight razor feels pretty safe or comfortable, and works pretty fast for me. dropping it would probably be dangerous though.
      i'm not too happy with safety razor, maybe a different combination of razor and blades could work, but i've tried a few already. think straight razor might matter more how it's sharpened or how well it has maintained the shape over time, some of them may have underwhelming scales or a small variation in shapes.
      maintenance is different, for better or worse.

    • @mattdrives4757
      @mattdrives4757 Před 5 měsíci

      Shavettes are totally different from straights. You have to use small movements and "buff" the blade by doing short quick strokes over a small area at a time. Straight razors have an edge that almost can move around the skin so you can do longer blade strokes. Hope this helped.

    • @mattdrives4757
      @mattdrives4757 Před 5 měsíci

      But in short yes straights are better than shavettes. They're less wasteful because no replacement blades are required, and they have more heft so you can let the blade do more of the work for you and not worry as much about using the right amount of pressure

      Oh yes. This is probably the best way to go, but safety razors work well too. Safety razors and straight razors both will give you a better shave and save you money over using cartridge crap. They take more skill though, and patience. They’re not for everybody. Back in the day, it’s the only option there was, really. Some men take pride in using them, like myself when I shave. I have a little glass dish that I use, with a boar hair type brush that I use, with quality shaving cream that I use to lather and apply it. In my opinion it lasts longer and is cheaper than buying the Gillette or similar type shaving cream. I usually have a beard but sometimes I go through phases where I shave and I use a straight razor. When I have a beard, I use one to trim stuff up at the top of my cheeks and mustache, and it works the best. Overall, they’re awesome, of course it’s all preference. Try it, and if you don’t like it, try it again, and if you don’t like it even then, I guess go back to using cartridge style razors, that’s okay too
