  • Follow Refinery29 to Downtown Los Angeles’ infamous Santee Alley shopping district, where you'll find dozens of displays bursting with hot-ticket fake makeup items like Kylie Lip Kits, Anastasia Beverly Hills highlighters, and MAC lipsticks. Ten years ago, this stretch was the place to go for knock-off handbags - and if they weren't already out in the open, all you had to do was ask. Today, there isn't a fake purse in sight; they've all been replaced by contouring palettes.

      @KC-xg7gs Před 5 lety +222

      I'm not saying that the Vendors selling the fake makeup are bad people -- it's just that, if they're planning on selling that much merchandise, they should be held to the same standards the owner of a small business is. If they were selling, say, counterfeit CD's or DVD's, then they really don't need to do all that much research other than maybe checking the product out to see if it's passable. Makeup, however, is a vastly different field: neglecting to look into the products you're selling could literally end up harming or killing someone.

      Take a look at those make up gurus here on CZcams who do Tutorials, or even celebrities. Look how terrible their face look without make up. They buy a shitload of expensive products and all it does is leaving their face in terrible conditions, and they believe their face is healthy when they buy expensive brands, vegan or not.

      i) People have been brainwashed by advertisers into thinking they need this high end luxury product, whatever that product may be. It can be anything, from makeup to cars to anything in between.
      ii) The same propaganda has convinced them that more expensive = better, something which is demonstrably false.
      iii) The problem is especially egregious with vanity products like makeup since the name of the brand is tied to the stature and esteem you gain by using said product. You're not just buying "beauty". You're also buying "status" as is the case with all luxury products.

      "Beauty consumers should be careful about whether they’re buying fake or real cosmetics because of their heavy metal content. A 2008 study found that heavy metals in cosmetics can cause skin allergies through percutaneous absorption on the skin. The use of these metals for color and pigments in makeup has been linked to detrimental health outcomes with continuous use - outcomes that include cancer, reproductive and developmental disorders, neurological problems, and contact dermatitis."

      What well, if you research the life of a product which includes to the product is made, from the shade to the ingredients, the packaging, the shades, finishes, marketing, distribution, the market that it is intended to, the actual production, it all adds up. When you buy a luxury item you are not buying "just" buying a product, you are also purchasing the "status", quality and what that brand represents. A drugstore brand reduces costs by making dupes which don't go through the developing stage that a brand goes through and that are also made from ingredients and/or materials of less quality, not necessarily bad quality, just less.

    ~Story Time~
    When I was a kid and still now I never trusted actual store brands like: Ross, Bealls etc... The reason I didn't trust was because the stores very always dirty and the makeup/hair products smelled bad were dirty and looked tampered. Also why I didn't trust and why I don't wear makeup now is because my sister got cheap makeup from a Ross and some off the streets (but I didn't know some of it was off the streets until she told me a year later), my sis got a really bad lip infection from the makeup, little me got scared and vowed to never wear makeup ever again. But since I watched this video I learned how bad the street makeup actually is! My sis could of died! I definitely did (I didn't actually die it's an expression) when they said 'arsenic, mercury, lead' how people's lives been messed up or ruin because of this is insane and scary! 😧
