Alita is the true female struggler in fiction. The story is thoughtful and filled with amazing worldbuilding and Alita has to be one of the most complex and well writen female characters in all of manga. Her journey is something that ANY berserk fan would enjoy, she's a true struggler in a world where every situation is more complicated each time.
Like, really. It's an understatement for me to say this but, the author of this story is certainly one of the most brilliant people out there and he is a true psychopath for the kind of stories he is able to make out of his f*cked up brain.

Its definitely has the same genre as berserk cuz both stories is about the main characters finding the way of life throught out the whole story but ngl berserk is on a whole other level.
But alita is like one of the best female fighter EVER in manga, even in friction i dare say...

I remember thinking the romance in the movie felt extremely forced…otherwise good time though.
And the funniest thing for me is that the movie is too faithful to the manga, she carries the manga too and the romance with the guy there is also very water with sugar.
@@giulyanoviniciussanssilva2947 Faithful? You mean the Yugo part? That was the only near faithful thing in the movie. For the rest they mixed and screwed up every plot line of the manga. Also they gave Alita the cheesiest lines ever written.
The romance with figure 4 is much better more mature with comedic moments late response I know

This manga is still ongoing more than 30 years latter please keep reading it. Last Order and Mars Chronicles are not spin-offs, they are direct sequels and completely necessary to understand the work, its characters and its messages.

@@lucienhaulotte4049 Those aren't spin-offs either. The manga characters evolve and continue their plots there, if you don't read it you won't understand why certain characters have changed their personality and location when they return in Last order.

@@lucienhaulotte4049 Ashman yes, but the rest in my opinion are very necessary, Ido's story for example, made me understand the character much better and his overprotective actions with Gally, as a fan not reading them would be a crime.

@@lucienhaulotte4049 and if I understand it correctly, she's the first live birth of a human, as the rest of all of humanity (not sure if it's just on mars or the entire solar system) is sterile, with all of humanity, having to be genetically/artificially created clones, very similar with the kryptonians in the man of steel superman movie

When she stated that she loves fighting because she doesn't have to think about her problems. It was a really insightful character moment.
My favorite Alita moment is her performance of Big Generator by Yes. After seeing everything she goes through (both before and after that moment) I'm just happy that there is such a fun, feel-good scene like that in the manga. Best girl Alita deserves it!

Hey Ryan I think reviewing some of the more adult studio ghibli movies (or the mangas their based off) would be right up your ally. Ones like grave of the fireflies, nausicaa, mononoke, and wind rises. Muria even mentioned drawing inspiration from Nausicaa in his interview
If you like Battle Angel Alita you should probably check out Armitage the third! It's a great little OVA that actually had a production done in California! It was even adapted into a movie and receive a sequel! Another Recommendation is Drakuun Rise of the Dragon Princess, Shadow Lady and Caravan Kid!
Eyyy my girl Gally is getting some well deserved attention but I'll be honest my favorite character is Nova, he started as a character who raises some interesting questions and ends up being a fun flan addict.
Jashugan is really up there tho, I'm honestly glad he wasn't in the live action because it's just too deep a story.
Unfortunately the 3rd part of the manga is kinda slow, since 2023 began all we got from the author was a drawing of his beloved pet pugs and I it's not like I hate them or him but he's not getting any younger, I hope we get more background info like we did until now.

I need to reread this gem, it was probably the one story that REALLY got me into reading manga. I remember not even knowing to read right to left for a bunch of chapters lol. BTW I've heard that the movie is finally getting a SEQUEL and I am so hype my dudes
I actually bought the box set and went into it blindly and fell in love with Alita. In my top 15 series of all time
Should see her in Last Order and then finding out her origin in Mars Chronicle. They are not spin offs, but continuations.
Got the first two deluxe volumes last Christmas and really enjoyed them both, I want to read the rest sometime 🙂

Thanks for reminding me of this series Ryan, it's been one of my long time favorites, rare example of "coming of age" story done right.
she's 300 years old (actually 600 years in age, but the last/second 300 years of her life, she was buried in the scrap heap, so really she's only been experiencing her first 300 years of life where she was born, on mars)... she's old enough to be your great great great gandma.. there's no "coming of age" with her... it's just her character/personality (nor is it from her amnesia), she just always has that wonder and hope in humanity, and she's completely new to the earth, literally being a martian alien, as there's no orange trees (oranges) and cacao/cacoa trees (chocolate) on mars, as well as martian society being very different from earth'ian society, and during "The Fall", she didn't exactly have time to "sight-see" on earth, lol...

Ok, since you asked, love the original run of the story. The follow up, Last Order, is interesting but didn’t enjoy as much as the original. Now we are on Mars Chronicles and I love this as much as the original. My only grip is we only get a new book maybe once a yr…or longer.

Zalem is the correct name.
Tiphares is one of the many name changes the English translation made in the 90s.
Just like how Alita's name is Gally in the original.
Many other languages stuck with the original names.
Modern English editions revereted most of the name changes, but not the Gally/Alita change
Alita has been my favorite manga since I was 13 (I’m 32 now) she’s a character that I love and wished she was more popular and was seen up there with the likes of kenshin and evangelion but I’m happy she’s gotten a movie and is getting more. They were just confirmed.
Forget one of the best female characters in Manga she's one of the best characters in general.

As a kid the OVA was one of my favorites, I remember renting it at blockbuster a few times when blockbuster was still a thing. Ah, fond memories.
We are geting a sequel of live action Alita, Cameron had to make 4 blue aliens movies but he is geting his next Ailita movie... someday.

Alita battle angel is my favourite hard science fiction manga ever. The second series is my favourite in the trilogy. Also the ending of the first manga isn't canon when the mangaka was make the first manga he got ill and ended it early incase he died before he could finish the story.

highly recommend Blood+ ("the saya saga"), as I think you might like it.. it's really quite deep, lots to analyze and etc... and very epic, along with two great bad'ss and waifu mcs ("protagonist" and "antagonist")...
(Claymore and Blood+ are the two anime that I know really well, unlike all other anime/manga, not being a super fan, like that with Claymore and Blood+, I'm no naruto expert or bleach expert or one piece expert, I can't talk about all of the characters, abilities, nations/factions, lore, and etc stuff, like I can with Claymore and Blood+, though my Blood+ is rusty as it sadly doesn't exist with newer generations, there's no watching or talk or even knowledge of it, despite that it like so many classics it was so popular, but is now completely lost and forgotten and unknown)

Not even through the video: You can blame Disney that we don’t get the sequel. But that’s why they forced motorball into the first movie. They wanted motorball in it no matter what. And just a reminder that the James Cameron avatar movies was made as a test FOR the alita movies. James Cameron was such a fan he wrote fanfiction and sent it to the author, which got him the rights to filming. Also his ff was what facilitated the 2nd comic series/ arc.
The movie was a labor of love made by fans for fans and in case they couldn’t get a second movie they did as much as they could. (Disney’s fault)

Alita is awesome from beginning to end including the sequel manga series.
Alita's world building is absolutely incredible. Absurdly bleak and edgy but also totally awesome and i want to have an Imaginos body too!
There is also Last order. And it's an over the top TOOOUUURRRRNAMENT arc that also delves into the politics and history of the setting. And that is followed by Mars chronicle which continues that same high end world building but some of the main characters are kinda nasty people and it's a bit of a bummer. But i still keep following it anyway.
Also: Desty Nova is my favorite villain ever and i'm torn between hating him and wanting to be him. A total riot every time he shows up!
Ryan said the manga wasn't that Gory. Nah, Last Order is WAY GORY! There's a point in Last Order were she's massacerring soldiers, that if Guts saw he would've
froze up and shouted "Damn girl! CHILL!!" I don't know if I'd call that better though. Spoiler: There's a part were Alita becomes an kinda cat-girl bot and winds up
getting her memory re-set. With that in place I'll still say Nausica is the better female protagonist even though I still really like Alita. Did Ryan see the new Miura
interview? He referenced Nausica in the video so that more or less confirms it's influence over the creating/writing of Berserk!
That manga has also the most traduction difference like her name or location , like the french translation shes named gally and the ouroboros segment shes alita and english its otherwise or theyre called hunter warrior
You should totally check out Last Order it takes place 3 chapters before the end of the manga and it's the definitive continuation of the first manga

Berserk was my first manga. For a long time I thought I peaked on my first try until I found Gantz and Alita.
Just make sure when you read this to find the original translation. The updated translation more recently by vis isn’t as good as the original in conveying what the characters say
Just saying, if you decide to read the sequel to the original Alita series which is called "Last Order", you should know that the last volume of the original series is not canon to the sequel.
Hmm not sure if you know (didn't notice you mentioning it), but somewhere around chapter 51, after a major event where you'll find 2 black pages, it stops being canon and you have to read The Last Order to continue the story. The author rushed the ending because he was afraid he couldn't finish the manga due to health issues I think, but after 5 years he came back and retconned the ending.
I highly recommend you read Tenpuu for me is top 3 female protagonists in manga. It's from the same artist who is making the sequel to Parasyte, (Parasyte Reversi).

Remember there's 2 sequels. Alita is either my favorite female character or second favorite, for all the reasons you've mentioned. If there's anything i don't like about her, it's that she changes too much from arc to arc. Many times she feels like a completely different character, especially in the sequels. Though this is kind of a cretique of the series in general. Some arcs are all over the place, can be bloated at times. Second favorite character in this series is definitely Nova! The Rick Sanchez of manga. He's also has some similarity with Hisoka from HxH, in that he just does whatever he feels like at the time. The manga has top tier artwork as well! Overall i'd give the series a 8/10.

The manga has long sequel and also a prequel that is publishing currently. But the problem is the current manga has tonnes of hiatuses.
True! The prequel has some really interesting bits and I kind of enjoyed the tournament arc the living mechas were really awesome.
I don't believe we'll get to see all the author has planned but I'll enjoyed it while it lasts

See the movie was never shocking to Alita fans. The reason there was never another anime is because James Cameron owns all the film rights. He was taking about making Alita while he was filming Avatar.

Understanding the intentional sappiness/cheeziness of the "romance" and its tragic failure:
"Hugo's (Humanity's) Fall"
Alita is 300 years old... she's been through a lot of $hit, and yet she's the most human person of all, 100% devoted to doing the right thing, to being a good person, Alita never cowers before evil, "I do not stand by in the presence of evil", she truly is "the most human person I've ever known" (as Hugo said so rightly), total sacrifice to others, "willing to give her heart, her life, and her own interests/dreams/desires for someone else". Alita knows full well how sappy and cheezy the romance was with Hugo, but she didn't care, as she wanted/needed that hopeful moment of escape, from the $hit of the world and of her life. Alita intentionally believed in Hugo, hoping he was that sappy/cheezy "perfect guy", just wanting a brief moment to smile, to forget all the $hit of her world and of her long existence, but then Hugo had to ruin it, as he wasn't that sappy cheezy "perfect guy"... Alita's one moment of escapism, her brief chance to smile and forget the world and reality, was crushed by the reality of the world and of people. No one is more human than herself, she's way more human than all other humans, and so she is constantly disappointed by the rest of humanity, and constantly having to stand up to its evil, as she's the one good person in the entire world. Alita truly is an angel, fallen down from the heavens upon this undeserving world and its undeserving humanity.
Alita inspires and causes change in everyone she encounters, she's a force of nature, a born leader, a true hero. Alita draws out the humanity in everyone through her sheer force of will and action, Alita always does what is right, she never compromises with wrongness and evil. Alita never stands by in the presence of evil, because everyone else does do so, and so must Alita rectify our own weakness with her own sacrifice for us, total selfless commitment to all others, our champion of justice, our fallen angel, our battle angel, fighting for all of us, despite how underserving we are of it and of her.
Alita is the physical embodiment of humanity, Alita is the “heart and soul of humanity” (using a quote about Heero Yuy from Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Alita and Heero Yuy are practically siblings, lol)
(Alita even changes and unifies us, the people of the real world, watching Alita as viewers, Alita is the "speaker" for all of humanity, everyone understands Alita and her lessons of being truly human and empathetic, of being self-less and caring more about others than ourselves, sacrificing yourself for others, instead of sacrificing others for yourself)
There's a big difference between a 'superhero' and a HERO, and that is Alita, she's a HERO, not an empty superhero
