    Part 2- • Alita- Battle Angel Is...
    In this video, I go over some of the character's strong points that made her so easy to relate to growing up, mainly focusing on the manga. Part 2 is the movie review proper.
    I do not own any of the artwork, music or footage featured in this video. Just trying to give this series some love. Credit for naming the "born sexy yesterday" trope goes to Jonathan McIntosh, the Pop Culture Detective. / @popculturedetective

      OK.
      So, I never heard about Alita, until just recently, and all of the Sick Jackass Wackos (SJWs) attacking it, in favor of the crap marvel movie, captain marbles, and, then this came across my ewe-toob feed, so I watched it.
      The funny thing, is, that the ewe-toob feed shows this video to have been put out about 1 year ago.
      So, how did you get the trailers from a movie that just came out, rather recently, to put in a ewe-toob video 1 year ago ?!?
      Don't get me wrong.
      I will not be wasting my valuable time or money with the captain marbles, but, you have made me interested in the Alita movie.

      I’m... so split on this movie. it’s beautiful and there’s so much to love, but it’s almost TOO pretty. I wanted it to be much, much darker... the protagonists aren’t utterly broken inside like in the manga, and the intensity of their drive just isn’t there. It’s still a terrific effort, but I waited for 10 years for James Cameron to make it, and I can’t help thinking he would have made it much better. Gunnm is just too important for me to feel satisfied with this version, as much as I respect the effort. The scrapyard is too nice, and Hugo too much teen dreamboat and not enough desperate scrapyard rat. That ending is sooo iconic to me, and in the film I just didn’t feel it. Sigh. Still glad it got made, but... what could have been...

      I think critics look at cinema as if it is science. It is not! A movie either works or not! It does not have to have a sophisticated plot to work. It can have flaws but still be an amazing and magical experience. Especially if you think of kids or teens experiencing a movie - they just might really like it and they do not perceive it from critics perspective. But not only they, just the average movie goer. Almost every time when critics really love a movie I do to, like the last jedi and drive, but recently more and more often I really enjoy movies that critics do not like. Alita is a really strong example, as it is an amazing movie. Another one is venom, from recent movies.

      oh yeah? Gunnm is a philosophical ,existential questionning master piece to be sitting next to A Brave New World, only with a lot more. Where is all that in the movie? Where is the scrapyard? Where is the brutal constant immorality that contrasts so well with the beautiful yet politically not correct philosophical insights and questioning of both Nova, Ido, Gally and the main enemies? I come to realize a lot of fans didn't read the manga the way the writer did wrote it, but only enjoyed the battles, the fights and the panzer kuntz techniques while these are only side dishes of the story's existential goal and depth... Gunnm adapted into Battle Angel Alita is like adapting a Mad Max into a twilight movie. It's an heresy.

      Okay, thats 2

    • @AM-we8hj
      @AM-we8hj Před 5 lety

      I'm not entirely sure you originally quite caught the extent and depth of the "philosophy and existential questioning" of Yukito Kushiro in the manga if you find yourself able to say that (which also extends to bioengineering at some high levels)...I mean, it goes as deep as digging the "quantum mind", social thermodynamics principles, Nietzsche's Nihilism and such, and he literally mentions them at some point to better guide readers because he doesn't leave it to so much interpretation, his clues are guidance, not fancy words for the show (which seems to be only that for you in the manga)... The movie was intentionally, that I figured after reading more (mooore) of the Cameron-Rodriguez-Kishiro collaboration, made simpler to give the opportunity for a wider audience to get on board, just like the GUNNM ANIME was, just any big screen, adaptation is (remember the 1984 fiasco?). Just like anything that has ever been popularized actually, it has to get through some simplification-process for the wider audience to not get lost in the intellectuality of it. And anything that is simplified is then over-simplified by most of an audience who then interprate the art piece as... anything they want. And that doesn't do justice to the beautiful mind of Yukito Kishiro.

    • @AM-we8hj
      @AM-we8hj Před 5 lety +1

      Also something quite simple you quite don't catch: Mad Max. Since GUNNM more than obviously was inspired by Mad Max (amongst other influences), try and get rid of the vile humanity of the world of Mad Mzx, and see if it still stands strong together on the screen with the same meaning and the same story and the same understanding and feel from the audience :). Same with Gunnm's world. It isn't the happy, joyful, enthusiatic world that is portrayed in the movie, it only "says" it's evil, but looks nothing evil. It's colorful, always sunny, sparkling and feels like a world I'd gladly be a part of. The original scrapyard is a place so vile I was scared to shit living near anything close or far from what it is, when I discovered the books at age 12.
      Take music, take an original complex track. if you move, alterate, change the background, the harmonies, but only keep a so-called structure with a couple of original phrases and intervals of the original theme, you get a new song, only with glimpse and influences of the original one which has been re-interpreted. Btw I'm saying this with the idea that you already understand the difference between lyrics and music. A word's meaning has no meaning in music, only the music conveys words through emotions, words only are aggregates to a track's theme for the general popular public who mistakes music with sung poetry. Saying this as the academically and professionally trained musician I am.

    "Nobody knows what Battle Angel is except Battle Angel Fans" Hell Yeah to that!!!!

    I never met anyone else here that even knew or had heard of it.
    It was also what made me learn martial arts. I'm a teacher of that now and living my idol.
    Alita/Yoko and her universe of characters shaped my youth to a great extent, I was bullied quite a lot back then through a lack of social skills and she taught me to get back up.
    I also love James Cameron and his movies, avatar specifically. and I was more than happy to learn in 2012 that he actually planned to turn MY FAVOURITE Manga into a Film. I found that really old interview with him and Yukito Kishiro back then where they discuss a possible movie. I have been fangirling since then.
    I also really like the points you bring up here, the sexist/Child ones, I've never seen it from that angle but I can totally agree. I was furious right along with her back then.

      The more I think about it, it's kinda like when a parent remarries and you get to know your step siblings. It doesn't take long to feel "safe" around them cause you don't have to worry about them ever asking for anything like "that" from you. It's funny how humans can also feel this way about completely fictional characters, as if they are a family member or you wish they could be. For them to be there for you, a support system.
      Also, your story is powerful. Damn. Probably the best thing that can result from exposure to this comic.

      Yes, I will forever be thankful to Yukito Kishiro Sensei for creating this work in the insane amount of detail and continuing it for so long.
      I think to an extent those characters sometimes feel more real to me than actual people. Especially Alita since she has been around for so long. And her emotions are raw and real to me. I can always relate. especially the part where she says: "whatever my arms can reach, in this space I am invincible." That sentence has stuck with me.
      I also thought Kishiro-Sensei was really brave to go through with the idea that Alita in Last Order was "just a chip" and not her brain so not actually "her".
      I had introduced some people to it back then and many of them stopped reading it when this fact was revealed, they felt betrayed. I did too at first but I also thought, just because it isn't her, doesn't make the experiences I went through while reading it less real, it also doesn't make her less real. So I stuck with it and as always it only got better.
      Thank you very much for replying and all the best to you! I also hope for an awesome fun experience in the theaters this year. To be honest I will be happy with whatever I get. I mean, it's Alita in Colour!! I just hope I don't have to keep trying to defend it from the mass media....

I don't much care for "angry" reviews, I focus more on the positive and on theming. I do this pretty sporadically though, since a lot more of my time goes towards my own comic series called "Planet Ripple." But it's even more fascinating to see such a clever counter to that formula coming from a 30+ year old cartoon/comic created by a culture that still retains such old-fashioned views on gender roles and behaviors.

Born Sexy Yesterday trope. However, isn't first potential love interest being the one the person ends up with is the norm? A recent example of this comes from the constant stream of iksei stories that are coming about. Here we have a stream of ordinary Japanese men, thrust into a new world they know nothing about, and literally the first girl the guy meets is almost always the main love interest. Even if the girl is also exceptional in her own way, the fact is that the ikeai tends to be some sort of god tier person that could easily find someone else, but that's the first person he met in this new world, so that's who he ends up with.

    Funny thing about this trailer for me... I had never heard of the character. I don't read Manga, but I like the art style. I'm closing in on 60 so my exposure to Japanese animation and cartoons is old Astro Boy, Space Battleship Yamato, and Captain Harlock... but watched on a french language channel, I don't speak french so all I could do was watch and fill in the story myself.
    So... what's my point? I saw the first trailer and got hooked on the look and idea of the story immediately. I'm going to be picking up the books as soon as I can. Funnier is that because I have no real history with the genre, I didn't even see the Adult to Child/Adult plaything aspect of the trailer. To me it was about the hero's journey aspect. Yes it felt a lot like 'Buffy' but that's ok. It's a good thing. I like that story and am looking forward to seeing how it plays out in a culture different from my own. Anyway, looking forward to the movie, looking forward to getting the books. An Alita fan in the making. ;)

      Although shorter in content, more adult themed & technically detailed and graphic (but not in an out and out xxx adult way), I would recommend the 3 OVA's of *Cyber City Oedo 808* done/dubbed by Manga Entertainment UK Ltd too.
      It is complete with some of the best 80s/90s voice actors of the original cyberpunk era such as Sean Barrett, Stuart Milligan, Nigel Greaves, Daniel Flynn and the late Bob Sherman etc, with the aptly emotive and fitting rockish music to boot.
      another series with human qualities and progressions, with well though stories and novel settings/plots, are *Planetes* and *Jormungand*
      Before some other commentators jump on me for saying dubs and subs;
      I do like original language subs (subtitles) as they can & do impart more original intent and meaning from a different viewpoint as originally desired, but sometimes to be fair, great dubs can bring that extra pazazz instead of detracting from the original bad dubbing [cough cough Akira..] when they are done well with understand non-relatedly yet similar tropes and ideoms that must be conveyed differently to have the same intent & effect.
      Not all subtitles are well translated, sometimes even the original studio prefer the dubbed version(s) too [cough cough Hellsing & Hellsing Ultimate].

    Yukito Kishiro is for me like an Isaac Asimov of Japanese sci-fi. I am a fan of Alita since 1991. The commentary of Rick on Planet Ripple is accurate and balanced. It does not try to dogmatically explain why things are in Japanese culture as they are. Yukito's post-apocalyptic view is one of a kind, where he draw us face to face with the situations of being human and the human nature of our own desires and expectancy. How can a cyborg replicate those codes? Alita has a shocking way to one of the possible answers. Thank you.

    I have every confidence that Alita will be a faithful adaptation. Say what you will about Cameron and Rodriguez they are 2 of the most visionary film makers of our time.
    People harp on Cameron for the story and writing of Avatar yet forget this is the same guy that gave us memorable lines and stories for Terminator, Aliens, True Lies and Titanic. Cameron's film has always been about the experiencing the ride everything else is bonus. Rodriguez has his bumps in the road but like Cameron his films are visually stunning. Sin City is still gorgeous to look at.

      Assuming you have not found this yet:
      I don't know about where you live, but where I am getting the manga was a very slow and painful proccess, especially as the original run has been out of print for several years. Luckily a new collected run of that is being printed now so you can get a hold of that. Until you do though, you can read these masterworks online, on varying sites. The original Battle Angel Alita run is here - kissmanga.com/Manga/GUNNM Keep in mind, everything that happens after chapter 52 page 34 is not considered canon. Next is Last Order - www.mangareader.net/battle-angel-alita-last-order all good from start to finish, then the now ongoing Marsian Chronicles - fanfox.net/manga/gunnm_mars_chronicle/
      Again getting a hold of the books have been hard for me, might be a lot simpler for you, but to be fair you may want to know if you like what you are about top buy first. If that is the case though and you DO like it, supporting the creator of the work is only fair :)

They're doing it because they know it made a lot of money (like dragonball, ghost in the shell, etc.). What gives me hope is that Cameron isn't making Alita because it made a lot of money (it didn't, like, at all), he's doing it because he actually likes it.

Give a look to the greek Theatre and movies of italian directors. They bleed emotions. Japanese added something to the game...nay they took away: censorship and hipocrisy. Every feeling or instinct is showed in japanese anime without shame. Bad, good, evil, pure, sadic, moving, cruel, bright, gross, love, hate ....all experiences are deeply embedded in stories and characters.

    Ah, Gally, my first fictional "crush".
    I strongly looked up to her as a person, I respected her (and still do, obviously), but of course, as a straight guy, I did feel some attraction to her too.
    Her journey touched me, I cried as she cried, smiled as she smiled and started fistpumping like a moron when she mentally pulled herself up again and found the inner strength to go on no matter the hardships.
    I do wonder how this affected me. I was already a teenager when I read the manga. Was she the first expression of my "preference", or did she help shape it? I know now I am often attracted to strong and intelligent women. I love it when a woman knows what she wants and has the stubborness to fight for it and the willingness to dirty her hands. I adore it when a woman is intellectually gifted, analytic and rational. The cute but dumb and naive type is definitely not for me.
    Gally maybe not be a genius girl, but she is bright and levelheaded, and she is the very definition of a strong and headstrong woman. As I grew older, my admiration for Gally never dwindled, but she did get the company of other, somewhat similar women: Sarah Connor, Makise Kurisu, Twilight Sparkle, Sailor Mercury, etc. But Gally will always be the first.
    Great video, an eloquent and very accurate explanation of why GUNNM is more than what can be seen at first glance in the trailer.
    GUNNM is very much an obscure manga, I hope people will give it the chance it deserves and not just stick to their preconceived notions and tropes.

      Well if she doesn't need a man I guess you're out of luck! I also find it kind of hilarious that you guys have a leftist bias, since Gunnm has so many references to right wing philosophy and thought, hell it's pretty much right wing. The character is the paragon of Nietschean overman ethics, counter-balanced with Rousseauian philosophy set to a world where Platonic philosophy and Republican ideals are preeminent. Sorry to spoil it for you guys.

      And exactly where is this idea of the Übermensch presented in a positive light?
      In case you didn't notice, GUNNM takes place in a dystopnian world, i.e. a hell on earth. For as little as it dabbles in the idea of Übermensch philosophy it clearly shows the cesspool of suffering and vileness which will be the result of such ultra-nationalist delusions.
      Gally herself even rejects the notion of the Übermensch as she, as a cyborg, is considered to be an Untermensch, as impure compared to the "100% flesh" people from Zalem.
      Ido, too, rejects that philosophy and that's why he is a cybernetic surgeon and has embraced Gally for who and what she is. Unlike other people from Zalem who live on the surface (like in "Another Stories") Ido even refuses to go back to Zalem.
      So clearly the series is not championing any right wing ideas, if anything it's a cautionary tale of where such delusions will lead to.
      And for the record, you're the one who connected the Republicans with fascistoid philosophy. I'm sure they'll be very happy to hear that.

      Thinking of women who "don't need a man" as desirable is ironic, really. Well, what do you have to offer them if they're so independent? If you can't see your value to a romantic partner, you should probably reflect on yourself and move on...

    • @powerfreshjennifer
      @powerfreshjennifer Před 6 lety +12

      I think you Otomic Ans don't understand the difference between need and want. Wouldn't you would rather have a woman who wants you over one who is forced because she needs to be with you. I'd rather be with a guy who wants me. I think you should reflect on yourself and how you view women. I don't need a man but I want to be with one. I'm not a child to be taken care of. If you have never been with a woman just because she wants to not because she needs to then I feel sorry for you. You don't know the joy of someone who loves you not because they have to but because they want to. I'm kind half asleep and I'm rambling. I think being with a needy person is too tiring. You asked what you have to offer an independent woman how about yourself or love. Wouldn't you like it if a woman was with you just for you and not what you can do for her? I think maybe there is something wrong with you and you need a needy girl because you are not enough for a woman. The big eyed born yesterday girl is easy over an independent woman because you have something over the born yesterday girl. I'm telling you if you have an equal partner who doesn't need you but just wants you, the feeling you have with that person is way better. I'm so tired and I'm sure this is a grammer and spelling mess. I really shouldn't care what you think but you views on women is so messed up I couldn't let it go. I hope you understand this but I'm pretty sure this being the internet you won't. Because having someone want you is the greatest feel in the world over feeling needed and I hope you get that feeling someday. if not what ever your a closed minded sexest pig so your lose.

      Although I love the manga I feel that the movie won't make it justice. Looking back at other anime/mang to movie adaptetions, I'm would say that I'm more scared than excited. Nevertheless I'm also hopeful ,since the movie is in competent hands.

      Thats what a critic generally always raise: the interest. Just by telling it will form the need of watching it. Didnt you noticed that "Nick on Planet Ripple" argue more against the movie then promoting it? Thats what human minds are made of and a lot of people know that, too. If i may tell you in short whats up with the movie, you may wake up:
      shortener story, clean enviroment (no dirt at all),
      no pain and hate (so called bad feelings),
      Desty Nova may not be part of the entire movie (and thats why there is absolutly no sign of cyberpunk in this movie), adjusted so called "cultural aspects",
      a way less blood and splatter then in the books,
      ....ongoing.
      By the way, Kisihro earns nothing from the movie. So, a fan will not have much motivation to watch it. If you watched the OVA movies then you can spare the entire movie. It will be much the same, yes identical made of.
      Cameron will form a franchise out of Gunnm because he paid Kisihro for most of the content (just martian chronicles remains in Kishiros hands) and now he want to turn it into profit. If it would just be money he would let Salazar act more of her own. But Cameron will not allow the movie to be succesfull, he just want the franchise going well. THATS ALL!
      If you dont believe me, ask yourself: why the heck the trailer is telling about alita beeing a special person? You may suggest well. It is obviously to make her an idol for kids. ( even "Nick on Planet Ripple" mention it)
      Thats super boring LAME. Cameron, your brain is a chip! Go back to Tiphares. The MIB is already missing you. :)
