Why Sunshine’s Volcano is the Worst Level Nintendo Ever Made.

  • Nintendo built countless games over the decades, and Nintendo designed even more different stages for all those Nintendo games. Most of those games ended up being good, some ended up being weird, some were bad, and some are considered to be among the best games ever released. Yet out of all those games, featuring thousands over thousands of different levels, it is my honest belief that the volcano in Super Mario Sunshine is the absolute worst level Nintendo ever crafted, and that is not only because the level itself is bad. This isn’t just the story of how Nintendo crafted a bad in Super Mario Sunshine, an otherwise great game. This is a story of how Nintendo was showering in gasoline while playing with tindersticks. As I see it the volcano in Super Mario Sunshine is that one time, Nintendo came dangerously close to actually burning down their entire company.

    It's really funny to me because it is *genuinely easier* than the way casual players drive the boat, even on your first try, but no casual player would ever, unprompted, choose to do it because it's an utterly ridiculous thing to do, going full throttle on a boat you're already struggling to control.

    I've got a bone to pick with the Pachinko section. I've been modding Super Mario Sunshine for a while now, and in terms of mechanics, there is nothing in Pachinko that is actually broken. The reason Mario gains so much speed at the top of the 'machine' is because there's a trigger area placed there which gives Mario the speed. While this does make the stage pretty tedious, there isn't anything broken about the stage. The trigger area actually does what it's supposed to do, and it can easily be removed with certain tools. Doing so does make the game somewhat more playable, although it does get considerably harder to get the red coin in the top right of the 'machine', which I assume is why it's there. Lastly, this comment isn't supposed to be me throwing shade at you or your opinions, I just really wanted to clarify this

    • @dancinswords
      @dancinswords Před 3 lety +4

      Whether "the trigger area actually does what it's supposed to do," is a matter of perspective. If you define "what it's supposed to do" narrowly, as imparting the acceleration, then it's not broken. But you could also define it at a broader level, that it's supposed to contribute to an enjoyable experience, in which case it seems to not be working right.
      Something can be broken because of a purposeful design choice which does itself function as intended, but which ultimately conflicts with the purpose of the overall design

      Same, Luigi doesn't deserve that type of disrespect and cruelty. Also shouldn't Luigi's Mansion 3 technically be called Luigi's Hotel?

      @@koolaid33 the thing is the brand is "Luigi's Mansion" which immediately tells us Luigi is vacuuming up ghosts. Like how "Super Mario ______" is the brand for 3D Mario game with fun platforming.
      "Luigi's Hotel" probably wouldn't sell as well due to the less consistent branding.

    I managed to figure out the sweet spots for controlling the boat after a few frustrating deaths, and it ended up being very quick and easy.
    Try it yourself: when you're standing in the back half of the boat, spraying water left turns you left, and spraying right turns you right (the opposite of what you would think, but it's consistent). Once you learn to stay out of the front of the boat, you can get the blue coins in three minutes.
    Also, you can find some CZcams videos about how to cheese the pachinko level, I managed to get it first try with those tips

    Hopefully the colossal failure that cyberpunk was will finally open up gamers' eyes to stop preordering promises. But I doubt that'll happen, as we've had such a blatantly disappointing event that was preemptively successful nearly every year for the past couple of decades.

    You know when you go into any of the 7 stages and there is a shine select with the level’s name on top? Corona Mountan has it’s own shine select name unused in the game data. It was planned to be like the original 7 stages. How disappointing!

    I actually completed this level first time on my first play through. While I can see its potential to be frustrating, it wasn’t anywhere near as difficult as I thought. The boss battle was awful, though.
