Nintendo's 5 Biggest Mistakes.

- Nintendo is a fascinating company. Nintendo is probably the single most important company in the history of gaming, they revolutionized the way we think about, and even play video games more than once. But, and that’s a huge but, not everything Nintendo did over the years has been brilliant.
For every fantastic Mario sequel that Nintendo made, there is also a time where they stubbornly drove a franchise into the ground for no reason at all, for every time the Zelda series made a revolutionary design choice, there is also one time where they made a design decision so stupid that it ended up actively harming them and for every time they came up with something brilliant, there is also one time where they completely got stuck in the past for absolutely no reason.
So today we are going to take a look at my personal favorite and totally subjective most disastrous worst mistakes Nintendo ever made list.

Number 7: Never adding Fuzzies to SMM2
Number 8: lack of content in 3D world
From what I've heard from industry insiders, the culture behind game development is very different in Japan. Japanese developers stick FIRMLY to their creative vision. They ignore what the market wants. Sometimes this is a good thing, like how they reject microtransactions and day one DLC. Sometimes it's bad, like how they reject the competitive scene and good online service.
"Bill Clinton did not have a sexual relation with this woman" i died xD
I dont know if this is because of feedback from others, but I really appreciate how the live action segments in this video aren't as drawn out or awkward as they were before. They're edited quick and snappy and don't break up the pace of the videos now, which is a welcome change
Im so with you epic bawb (also pls get to 100k)
I figured it was just to be funny the first time or two, since those scenes were more about sharing stuff about himself since that's new. I figure his future videos like this one will focus more on the video subject
I think those problems are overall a good thing since it means he sees live segments as being more than "saying the same thing I was going to say except on camera now". They're a different element with a different potential and a bit of early sloppiness is the price of seeking it out.

This entire video can be boiled down to Nintendo's motto, "Stop having fun wrong".
@cool cool Nah, they've always been stubborn and petty with their business decisions.
Nintendo were always good game developers, but bad businessmen.
The Executives of Nintendo better start thinking for real that the customers and the dedicated fans are in fact "the boss" because they are the reason to why Nintendo got so far.
Without the customers and the dedicated fans then Nintendo won't be much of a company.
That being said, people need to start bringing up a Petition of Resignation to the Executives of Nintendo of Japan.
And if the signatures are overwhelming means the current Executives of Nintendo back in Japan need to resign at once.

Nintendo's Biggest Mistakes:
Joycon drif...
Ceave: "NO! THE STUPID N64 CONTROLLER!"
Hey, at least joycon drift hasn’t lead to physical harm... yet...
thats another example of not having the foresight to see how their equipment is being used, and also how stubborn they were when they rereleased the controllers or created the switch lite and they all had the exact same issue
I think the real problem with drift is that there's no solution right now for a small joystick that doesn't get drift eventually
No the biggest mistake with joycon drift was that they didn't patch it even though they knew it for 2 years and they could've just patched it out and then didn't listen and then patched it out a few weeks ago
@@SilverThyme Well, you cant exactly send out a patch for a hardware mistake. That’s like downloading a fix after you broke your keyboard; it doesn’t work. And I’m not saying that Joycon drift isn’t a problem, it definitely is, I’m just saying that no patch could help.
They just don’t understand the internet at all, if they mess with the community they just don’t understand. Their games and their company relies on the community, if you attack the community, the community will attack back.

@@anastasis2586 you can buy a cheap pc for the price of a switch or even cheaper than that...
@@anastasis2586 I can't afford a switch.
(TL;DR: PCs aren't just toys, PCs aren't expensive, Switch games are expensive)
Many people have computers for other purposes, like browsing, school, work, art, music, etc. When you buy a PC you're also buying a tool, admittedly one not everyone uses as such, but a tool none the less. Comparing PCs and Switches as gaming machines is flawed because of this.
I'm not sure where the idea that PCs are super expensive comes from, as I've seen laptops that I thought would crash run Minecraft at 30 FPS. Not up to modern Gamer(tm) standards*, but these were low low range laptops.
To justify buying a gaming console I should buy a handful of games, which in the case of the Switch quickly costs more than the console itself.
I still think the Switch is a great console, but it's just less for the money than a PC, depending on your use. The Switch excells at portable gaming. It's pretty much THE portable console.

All of these mistakes have one thing in common, in my eyes. They were all corporate. All of these mistakes took place either before the WII era, which was when it started to fall from the popular mainstream, or during the hieght/aftermath of it, where the highest up decided that four years of success was enough to bring back the nineties. Bottom line, Iwata saved this company with the WII, but when he did, he also caused its downfall. And after he died, rather than replacing him with another visionary, they replaced him with another corporate entity. Bottom line, Nintendo is no longer what it was, and to continue to succeed successfully they need to accept that and stop pretending that they are. Rant over
Nintendo laughs at this comment with the success of the switch
@@chrisnguyen2316 That success can all disappear with a single snap or the return of old mistakes.
@@Metroid4ever maybe so, but they’re a billionaire dollar company, it would take a lot to hurt them. The Wii U time was bad, but the company was in no danger at all
These are not normal corporate choices, or at least I'm concerned if that's the case. Nintendo consistently shoots themselves in the foot and makes choices anti-thetical to generating revenue. Successful corporations usually end franchices that don't generate the expected revenue, even some cult classics. Nintendo has much more personality than other big evil corporations.

How the fuck is the community for a game that’s no longer in production supposed to save a series that’s not even in need of help?
@@emblemblade9245 you're misunderstanding the point entirely
@@SmokePudding not really. It's a turnament of a game that's no longer in production, modifying the game in a way that disrespects nintendo's rules, making it literally just illegal.
@@Mqstodon mods are not illegal & emulation is not illegal; look up the court cases on both of these areas
@@Mqstodon Slippi and The Big House is in no way illegal, please do the research on it. There is a lot of misinformation being spread about this.
However, don't you think that Melee having a strong community after almost 2 decades should be something that celebrated by Nintendo? There aren't many games with such standing power like that. Disregarding the legal side of things, what does Nintendo lose out on when fans of their game (that's no longer in production, and yet they still try to crack down on emulation despite giving us no way to legally purchase the game from them) run online tournaments during a pandemic using LEGAL software to make their game playable online?
The fact that one guy was able to create an online service that works better than Nintendo's own paid service for their out of production game should be a testament to how much the community cares about their game. If Nintendo had half a brain they'd get that guy's help to work on Ultimate's netcode since they apparently had trouble on it according to Sakurai.
And remember, there's no use defending big corporations that only exist to get money from you. Nintendo has done a lot of scummy stuff over the years and defending the guys that don't care about you is really a waste of time.

My biggest issues with Nintendo: Nintendo Switch Online, the lack of Virtual Console on the Switch and Mario Kart Tour.

Mario kart tour has definitely improved a lot. It still is nowhere near the best, but it is still better than it was at launch.
Think of Mario Kart Tour as a teaser meant to get you to buy a full Mario Kart game.
I'm glad to see you're getting a lot more comfortable in the camera bits. The pacing has gotten a lot tighter!
To add to this, a youtuber called Nin10doland published a video that youtube is starting to shut down music on youtube. I can't really remember what he said in it, except for when he was looking for Luigi's Mansion music, usually there's supposed to be a lot of it, but when he checked, there was an extremely small amount he could choose from. I recommend watching the video to see more.
That intro music will never get old.
Nintendo: how big is demand for amiibos in North America?
Employee: looks like we could sell millions of them fairly easily
Nintendo: excellent, make it a bestbuy exclusive and send 5 to each store.
Nintendo are so scummy with manufactured scarcity
with #5, why cancel the online smash melee tournament? the game is 19 years old, and will never see the shelves of any store ever again, so the online rom wouldnt even damage their profits
You should have mentioned those controversial interviews where Tenabe explained "since Paper Mario Sticker Star, it is no longer possible to modify existing Mario characters", or something along the lines of such regarding the Paper Mario series.
Seriously every time Nintendo failed is about the arrogance of their higher ups.
The game producers are innocent, but their higher ups are greedy and corrupted.
They pay for their mistake , again and again, ever since PS1 era.
They say they know better and we are dumb but honestly what nintendo does sometimes makes me not want to play their games tbh
Sakurai is a developer and openly against competitive smash.
@@TestTubeGirl true, but he at least tolerates it to a degree. Nintendo on the other hands is just trying over and over to bludengon the competitive scene to death despite it being the fighting game for "EVERYONE".
@@SVD63Ninja I don't think what he did with Brawl was tolerant at all and I don't see any reason to believe that he is against Nintendo's attempts at shutting down the competitive scene. Considering that he doesn't want competition in Smash, I'd say he most likely supports it.
@@TestTubeGirl yeah that's fair. Though with the brawl thing it's more forgivable considering it was when he was tired of melee. But if he's trying to kill competitive in ultimate, then yeah,he's betraying his own foundation and could cause his game to crumble. You can't make a fighting game meant for everyone, then alienate one side. It's stupid,it's kinda the reason why i hate when competitive players harass casuals and casuals harassing competitive.
There's actually a fog defender spray scuba divers use on their masks while under water that actually does help with the build of of steam on the glasses.
Then where would the virus go? It's better to have it stuck on mask and glasses surface for a while than release the virus in the wild
The spray (defog, as it's called) goes on the scuba mask that you look through, and this person is saying to put it on the glasses, not to defog the mask over your mouth lmao
You can always just mold the wire thing tight though, i kind of get why people are saying that masks give them fog. But its only when you apply it incorrectly.
The game video / camera video balance is much much better in this. Thank you
I just remembered the time when Smash released on the 3ds and a lot of people said they broke their Slidepads because of it.
I have real-life friends who did that
I expect your kitchen appliances to be awarded with perfect fuzzies in a video soon
Further on Mistake 5, I hate their outlook on glitches in their games. My experience of it has been through Mario Maker. People had a ton of fun messing with the game with glitches and making super cool stuff happen. Nintendo saw that and patched out all the glitches, deleted the levels, and banned the level creators.
Funny you mention that, Ceave has an entire video on that topic alone.
I understand why they patched the glitches, but banning the creators went too far.
Thats just being a bunch of salty assholes, really.
The problem with Mario maker (1) is that it's online, and has a mode where you need to get through a bunch of levels in a limited amount of lives to earn a reward. As such the introduction of glitches really breaks that, as someone who is unaware of the glitches could have a run ruined by being unable to beat any levels through no fault of his own, barring him from earning the rewards. This is the primary reason to change the glitches, as well as glitches that straight up break the game and can crash the game, ones that may be able to get pushed into the online so that unsuspecting players may have their game crash when they play a level. Its simply a different situation than other games, even if playing the glitches on your own may be fun, for someone unaware it may ruin the experience. How they handled it in 2 is certainly better, since the levels are kept even when the level editor can no longer recreate it after the update. which also means that people can still play the glitches without it interfering too much. Any other instances of glitches seem to be entirely up to the developer and vary wildly, so I wouldn't even say its a consistent problem with Nintendo, just with certain developers and that extends to the whole industry.
Thanks for the lighting round at the end. The PlayStation and Virtual Boy things were two big ones I was hoping for in this video.
21:39 man I feel you with the whole glasses thing lol
It's so weird how the smallest of mistakes can strike so incredibly big.
Appreciate how you seemed to have dialed down on the face cam gags. Your transition to those bits were much better paced here than in the previous videos and were kept at a decent length.
He's being the example that no Nintendo exec will ever listen to. Feedback matters. (Although I personally didn't dislike the overuse of the live footage gags, I saw a lot of comments from people who were not enjoying it. Then again, I could kinda tell he was setting up for moments like in this video where he'd respond to being told to dial it back.)
I relate so much to the palm-joystick rotating technique. If you didn’t use that strat it was an instant loss
Great video and all but when is that kitchen appliances tier list coming out?
My biggest problem with nintendo is that they innovate when they have a great formula, (Cough, 3d mario, cough), but they KEEP the systems that completely bomb!
Almost seems like they want each system to be succesful exactly once.
Unless it's pokémon.
@Walther Penne you can innovate without throwing away what was so good before. Odyssey did this pretty well, and it used the sandbox style of previous games
Even a small thing like F.L.U.D.D. in sunshine affected Mario's movement enough to make the experience fresh, and not just "64 but tropical"
@Walther Penne So would you say that Henry Ford did not innovate just because he kept the basic design structure of a carriage?
@Walther Penne But that is by definition innovating so good for you but you're wrong
"Shaking the troublefruit tree" is my new favorite expression. Is that an Austrian idiom, or just something you made up?
It's not Austrian. It doesn't even sound good in German/Austrian Dialect. (Am Schwierigkeitenfrüchtebaum schütteln?)
Nah. There isn't really an idiom for 'asking for trouble' except maybe 'sich Ärger einheimsen' since nobody would ever use 'einheimsen' regularly, then again, can't remember anyone ever saying that in real life.
And here I assumed it was a Mario game reference. From your comment, I guess I thought wrong.
@@Leartin Fascinating.
@@NoriMori1992 I didn't think of that, but it's possible. I don't know. I haven't played all of them.
@stackhaufen "Shaking the slapping tree" is an amazing idiom and I will be using it, since it makes okay sense in English. 5/5 fuzzies.
When an ad cuts the "gooodbyyeee" in half
Thankyou for toning down the on-camera gags, they were obnoxious. This is a good way of doing it.
Okay so I really think you nailed this video, the facecam appearance aren't useless, they serve a purpose and there isn't too much humor, I think you struck the balance this time
When he said "Let's do this" I'm not used to seeing his face so it was cool to see him say the words lol
Wieder mal ein Highlight meines Tages dein Video zu sehen. Deine Begeisterung nimmt mich immer wieder mit. Ich hoffe du hast den Schluck Vollmilch gut vertragen.
Liebe Grüße vom Bodensee.
When he said bastion I almost had a nostalgia based heart attack oml
Ceave, I just wanna say that I am really not feeling good at the moment, but your videos always make me feel... secure. The melodies you use, your voice, you Storytelling, it really brightens my day.
Thank you
Generic sentimental comment. I don’t know what’s real anymore
@@vanKarsie well sucks for you, I never wrote a comment like this before, I know that they’re generic but that doesn’t change how grateful I am for this video rn
Just keep you mouth shut if you haven’t anything nice to say
Ceave, I would have LOVED to see you rank all your Kitchen tools! When will the video come out?
Very well made video. I agree with all of your points! Some I never even considered but it seems so obvious now.
Hey Ceave, just want to say since you have had your face in your videos, it seems even more personal and interesting! Thanks for all the content you've made!
