Carpenter here, not a woodworker. Do NOT buy a used framing square because they are often bent and not square. They aren't too expensive and if you are building a roof or stairs they are well worth the money.
Good point! A quick trick for checking square is marking a line, flipping the square over, and seeing if it lines up exactly or if the square isn't parallel anymore.
You can always re square the framing square with a punch and hammer
A bit late but don't forget 'Little Ole UK' we love you across the pond.
England!
Hello Rex, im an Indian living in France! I love your channel. And it has taught me a lot. I am a self taught passionate woodworking student. Its not my profession which allows me to do it with ease of mind. But i am so grateful for your way of explaining things and making them so accessible. Thank you!
Indian here! very late to the party but just bought my first tools and I'm going to build a mallet this weekend. Your videos help a lot!
Poland! :) And about squares, my idea for best precision square is the square not from a fancy brand, but with a norm. In Europe it is DIN 875 (even lowest precision grade 2 is super precise). You can buy made in Europe square with angle precision of 0,03 mm (1/2-1/3 of human hair) for 10$. Way more precise than 99,999% of squares and cheaper than any "woodworker brand" square.
Can you suggest one on the US Amzon?
One of the main benefits of a speed square is that it's a very handy quick fence for circular saw cuts at 90 and 45 degrees. Set the square down on the board, put the saw blade on/next to the line and slide the square/fence over and make your cut. Can also be used for a hand saw

I'm a Chinese living in Canada. I like your great videos.
I am from the Netherlands, learning a lot from your video's.
Dear Rex, I am from Berlin, Germany. About two years ago I started to get interested in wood work, and I started watching a huge amount of youtube videos - and I learned a lot from them. Your channel is in my view the best combination of teaching, story telling and having fun! THANK YOU for your great effort to produce such high quality and instructive videos! I only have a small chamber for wood working - only 6 or 7 square meters - and use only a few electric tools: a screw driver, a stiching saw and sometimes a sanding tool. All other works I do manually. And I bought most of my (used) tools on ebay. Thus, your ideas and recommendations are really worthy for me. Thanks again!
I'm in berlin too! I kind of have a similar "shop" although I shouldn't dare call it that way. I also started recently, and although it's not my main activity, sometimes I think it could be interesting to find some contact to join forces with, perhaps for a laid back market project or simply friendly exchange of ideas or materials.
As someone who spent a year in Berlin (and frankly misses it... hopefully I'll be back one day), I'm glad to see it represented (even though I'm currently in the states). :) I look forward to seeing the 🇩🇪 on the wall at some point (even though I know there's a very different relationship to flags there than what we have here... heh.)
I'm from Hungary. Your channel is one of the bests in this topic.
Hi, Being a DIY'er from Izmir Turkey, I am learning a lot from your videos. Thank you!

I once noticed that 95 percent of all woodworker have one tool in common and almost nobody talked about it. This starret type square has some seconds screen time in almost all videos. I bought it aaaaaand now it's my best friend who follows me everywhere.
Trinidad and Tobago. And I can see my flag on the sheets you held up!
Hola Rex, gracias por los consejos. Saludos desde Chile 🇨🇱
Bore da from north Wales, Wales is a separate country within the UK, as a professional woodworker and teacher I was brought up on steel one piece engineers' squares, but lately I've turned to combination squares. I'm heading for 70 but still looking to learn things. Thanks for entertaining and informing me. David

Hi Rex,
I am watching from Scotland currently part of the UK. I am a retired wooden boatbuilder and own most of the old tools, especially wooden tools, some of them made many years ago and still in good “fettle”. I admire your style and find you very entertaining. Keep it up !
An Englishman in Moscow, Russia.
'Currently part of the UK'.... since 1707. Longer in the UK than the US has been out of the Empire.
Hi Rex - I’m a Brit living in Australia, so my allegiance to the flag depends on who is winning the cricket or rugby! Would be happy to see either flag on your wall. I have a couple of projects in mind for my workshop - a Union Flag (Union Jack) made of three different shades of wood, and a map of Australia, with each of the states and territories again in a different shade of wood. All made from reclaimed pallet wood, of course 😁😉
Keep up the great videos
Colombia 🇨🇴 here!

Dominican Republic.

I'm from Scotland. Thank you for making these videos, they're really useful.
Really enjoy and appreciate your channels. Modified your $30.00 bench with straight doubled 2x4s, splurged on a one inch threaded rod, washer and nut and added a leg vice catty corner to the crochet. I drilled the chop before champhering to allow for dogs. Built two minis to match to help support sheet stock. Still have a few cutoffs left. Wahoooo!

Hi, Liked your commentary, no life stories and straight to the subject. From Australia, stick up our flag.
Grant
Since you ask, I am resident in New Zealand (although was born in England). Our flag is similar to but distinct from that of Australia.
I''ve owned a fairly flash looking tri-square for about fifty years - mahogany handle with diamond shaped brass inlays and brass edge; no brand name apparent, and I think it could be something like a Marples knock off. It wasn't cheap cheap though.
I've long suspected and more recently confirmed that it was out of true. My most recent attempt to quantify the degree of error came up with an estimated 0.5 degree. It doesn't sound much, but it's enough to throw things out. In recent times, I've been measuring it both ways and averaging. Time to let go, I can see, of the nostalgic connection. Thanks for your input in this video, and many others that I've watched since i discovered you a few days ago..
Hi Rex, I'm watching you from Italy.

hi 5 kabayan!!!
Hey Rex! Chris here, from Oxford in Great Britain. Hoist a UK flag up there, matey! Awesome vids - I’ve tried loads of your projects for real, especially renovating vintage tools or making my own. Really satisfying using your own tools to make stuff, and giving ancient tools a new life. They work way better than the cheap crap you pick up at the hardware stores! Oh, and I own 2 of those machinist combo square thingies in this vid! Never even realised how cool they are - they just got a promotion to the “essentials” rack! Keep up the good work! :)
Hello from France !
Hand tools are more accessible for small workshop. And low Noise. Very important when you live in big town, with neighborhood.
It is the sharpening that is the most difficult step to obtain good results and make the handtool really usable.
From the rainy land of Ireland. Love the videos. Really enjoy the top quality and in depth explanations. Looking forward to see this channel grow. Thanks 👍🏻
I find I need a couple of adjustable squares, because when using them for marking, I often alternate between a few measurements and keep adjusting back and forth between them leads to inaccuracies.. UK here for the sticker wall! :-)
