- An old time complex tool still as good today as it was in yesteryears. A true time tested reliable tool that every carpenter must know how to use properly.

Thank you very much and I would appreciate more videos with practical demonstrations.
You’re welcome.
Thank you for the info on how to adjust an out of square framing square. I knew my framing square was out of square but did not know how to fix it. Not it will be a useful tool.
You are so welcome! I'm glad that it helped you.
I love it when you teach how to use tools. Some of us are REAL noobies!
Thank you very much. I am glad that you like them. What tools would you like to learn about next?
Good to know. Thank you
You're welcome
Papa, I appreciate all the information and would like to see similar videos on other shop tools as well. Thanks
Understood, what tools would you like to see next?
Great video. I had forgotten alot of this. Like the old saying goes. If you do use it, you will lose it.
So true! Glad you enjoyed it and got a little refresher.
Good work.
Thanks!
Well done. Hooah!
I would watch (and appreciate) a practical framing square video.
Thank you
Keep the videos coming!
Yes sir, will do.
You are a inspiration!! I'm not as young as 99% of the people in the woodworking/cnc community. Most people my age say "cnc isn't woodworking" or "it takes nothing to push a button"!! Well you can hopefully attract woodworkers with fantastic videos like this and hopefully inspire them to try the cnc part of the hobby.
Cnc opens up a whole new dimension to woodworking
A wealth of knowledge these old timers are thank u for the video paw paw..
Thank you very much
Thank you useful information 💐❤️🇮🇶
My pleasure. Thank you for continuing to support my channel.
Good information
Thanks
Thank you for all the helpful information. I am grateful for your time spent making this video to help me build and further my passion for carpentry. Thank you 🙂
You’re very welcome
The framing square was a major tool we used in the pipefitting trades. Great layout tool.
Thanks for the valuable information.
Yes, it is a great layout tool. You're welcome
I had a brief encounter with my table saw blade.....so while I am recovering I have been catching up on your videos! Thank you so much for all of the info that you share....your presentation makes it a pleasure to binge watch.
Wow, I hope that you were not hurt bad. Thank you very much for watching. I hope that you are back in the shop soon.
Could have been much worse; lost one joint on one finger and tip of another and bunch of blood. Take care.
I'm so sorry to hear that. Please take care of yourself.
I also had a recent fight with a table saw.........my left forefinger paid the price. Took 1/4 inch of bone off the end. First accident ever after 50+ years of operating power tools.
30 years for me. Dumb luck or rookue mistake!🥴
Great job! I’m a retired stone mason over 50 years in the trades, Tom Fuleky
That is awesome! Thank you so much
Thanks much, more to be learned .
I thought i understand I'II keep watching knowled is the key of "success".😂
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video. I would like to see more on the framing square
The next section of the framing square is very specialized and and only a few people would even be interested. Thank you for watching
Thanks for all your time in putting this video together. Yes, please show us the practical use.
Great video, reading and interpretation of the various scales are fast becoming a lost art.the video was a nice review for me.😁🛫
I agree that it is becoming a lost art. Unfortunately, many of the basic trade skills are being lost.
Very well presented! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. 💪🏼
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you very much
Thanks for the info. It's been a while since I had to use the charts. You're right, the speed square and calculator has taken over a lot of these functions. Kinda like the abacus vs. calculator.
Yes, you are correct.
Thank you so much. This was by far the best and clearly explained video on the framing square. Can’t thank you enough!
My pleasure. Thank you for watching
Thank you for the information it was great But I would like to see a demonstration of the framing square
Wow I just learned and I will be able to apply it to our shed build. Thank you.
That’s awesome! Thank you very much
Lots of good stuff here. I always assumed that my square was in fact square when I bought it - trusting the manufacturer to deliver a quality product. The tips on tuning it were also great. The various charts were sometimes a bit confusing, but if I took a bit of time and watched them a few times it would probably make more sense. My lack of understanding what you were explaining is not your problem; it's mine. Blessings to you sir, and thanks for sharing this valuable information about a simple, but important tool in the workshop.
Thank you very much. Too many times the charts are overlooked and not used as much as they should be. Today with so many electronic tools the old school processes are being lost.
I'll love to know how to read the roof rafters scale on the framing square, and thanks for the show I enjoy.
Lmao, hey the manufacturer probably did a good job. But between shipping, loading unloading, being put up on a shelf by some kid who doesn’t care, probably dropped a few.
Thank you for That paw paw i . Didn't know that.
You're welcome
Great info. Please continue . Thanks!
Thanks, will do!
New subscriber, PawPaw!
Welcome!! Thank you so much
excellent presentation, I’ll be teaching a beginner woodworking class for middle schoolers and think the steel square is a tool they should learn how to use. Your video has convinced me to do that. Thanks
You have an interesting challenge ahead of you. If I can help you please let me know. Thank you for watching
@@PawPawsWorkShop Thank you for your offer! My plan is to show them simple geometry tricks with the steel square; squares, rectangles, circles, triangles, etc.
When I was a kid my uncle framed houses. And I helped he did not take the time. To show me what he was doing. I can understand he was trying to make a living.
Thank you for sharing your story.
Thanks for the great information.
You’re very welcome
Thanks for your service...just liked and subscribed
Awesome! Thank you! I appreciate you very much. Thank you for subscribing.
Thank you very much
Thank you
Very interesting thanks
You're very welcome
@@PawPawsWorkShop can i get a example to build stairs
I really enjoyed your video! I would love to see how to draw a circle. Thank You!
Ok, I can do that for you. Thanks for watching my video
had a square for ever, my Dads. trying to figure out how some of it works. my square shows at the 39/39 mark... 55.16 I know my square if way old tho
That is the brace scale. The 55.16 would be the length of the brace it the two sides were 39
Please show in a practical use. Especially the octagon. I’m still missing how to take the scale from 1 foot to other dimensions. Thanks for your help. The instruction was very clear.
Really awesome. Thank you... I'm in process of digging post holes for one side of a deck. Would love to see how to set those posts on a 90 degree angle using the square, but u covered that pretty much.
I only covered part of it using the framing square. If you are aware of the 3,4,5 rule then use that to get it square.
Paw Paw’s WorkShop , thank you. I've only recently become aware of it on CZcams. Luckily, the foundation running perpendicular and past the deck, so I may use a laser w/90 degree lasers and the foundation or just the deck itself to line up the new posts.
Oddly enough you will find that the laser may be difficult to set up. Use the 3,4,5 method. You can also double the number to get a more accurate measurement to get you corner square. If you have room measure from the corner out 6, and again from the corner 8. With those two point marked on each leg get a helper and connect the dots. You need 10 to be square. Very easy and works perfectly every time.
@@PawPawsWorkShop , ill give it a try. Thank you.
The mark along the side is 1/2 of the hypotenuse. Then cut a 45 degree line across the corner. which will make even side for an octagon.
Would like to see layout of a hip roof, gambrel roof and dormers...I'm old school too, everything you need to know is on the framing square.
Yes it is. To many people have know idea how to use the framing square
I think the cnc left a lot people out in the cold. Myself included most people do not have access to these type machines
The cost and the quality of these CNC machines have come down greatly. It is increasingly easier to get one of these machines. It is a great hobby and potentially a money making opportunity. Many people have turned their hobby into a business with the CNC machine at the center point.
Operating a CNC machine is definitely a skill. I don't consider it a wood working skill. My wife and I have bread machine and make our own bread. It doesn't make us better bakers. The two skills are different.
I do believe it is still woodworking. You have to know wood types, hardness, grain considerations and many other factors. Not to mention the finishing. I do believe it takes an additional skill in that you must have computer skills. But consider this, technology is coming to many tools. You can not get computer controlled table saws, routers and other tools. As technology evolves so will the tools. Our history proves this everyday.
@@binnsbrian🤣🤣🤣. You don’t consider wood working a skill? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. No body is going take you serious.
I know that a lot of table saws set up differently, I have a ShopSmith, but a general setup routine for table saws would be informative. How about the smaller squares or the triangle square?
Thank you very much. This is an excellent idea.
Thanks for the great video. Do you know if you can use a framing square to determine the body and leg measurements to scribe a given angle? Say I want to produce a 27 degree line. I only want to use tools available in the mid 1800s. Would I have a reference book? Or could I do it with the charts on the square? Thanks for the help!
Yes, you can use just the framing square. You just have to understand some basic such as a 12:12 pitch is a 45 degree angle and a 6:12 pitch would be a 22.5 degree angle and so on.
Al go rhythm
ok
Did you ever do a part two? I don’t see a link for it anywhere.
I need a bathroom vanity built, are you available?
What city do you live in?
Ashburn Ga
Building the cabinet would be no problem. The shipping cost would most likely be very expensive. I would suggest finding a local cabinet shop. It most likely would save you a lot of money. I am in Louisiana
👍👍👍👌❤❤❤
Thank you
Hiw to cut a 36"octagon with a 2×6 bord on edge?
Used as a protractor?
Who knew that REAL carpenters were actually mathematicians! lol!
Math is the universal language of the universe. Everything is math. Thanks for watching
One of the most important and overlooked classes in school back in my day. Fortunately I didn't overlook them although I didn't understand their future use. Nor did I overlook other sciences...chemistry, physics, etc. Unbelievable how all of those topics have come into play in my life.
Man i hate math..lol
Lol, just can’t get away from it though
If you have to do this to your tools then buy more higher grade tool, the cheap tools are always made with poor metal. And people bang up their tools and knock them out of alignment
00:57 No, no.. never stop *call for action*
Thanks
