just hearing this, sounds like you may nothave been tricked. But had a viewer that did not know what they were doing in their restoration and may have honestly wanted help. It sounded like it made for decent content either way for helping others with their own restorations.

It would be cool to see a video on how to break down a decent sized slab into usable lumber. In my area, if I want exotic wood or anything other than hardware store material than I would have to buy a slab and mill it down into boards😂

And piece of wood sufficiently girthy could be used as a maul to make the axe work more precise.

Nice presentation Rex, I subscribed on the basis of it. But want to say: Those benches were the standard carpentry bench wherever I went. Designs had detail changes according to the maker - but they were much of a muchness in every other sense. The more permanent benches were assembled using joinery, and relied less on fixings than those in your pictures, but you are right about site benches - knocked together out of what was available for a limited short term usage. But the one thing you are wrong about is your comment about cast iron vices - cast iron, at least in the UK, was the "plastic" of its day and was, in the late 1800's and early 1900's, relatively cheap and extremely versatile. There were dozens of foundries turning cast iron products out. With the rise of modern metallurgy and construction and manufacturing materials changed and developed, cast iron lost it's prominence the foundries disappeared and the cost of cast iron became more prohibitive accordingly.

The only reason I don't have one is because nowhere around me for miles sells them.

voice of experience. well said Rex incidentally if you want to try out carving don't buy a set get yourself a 1/2 shallow gouge a 1/4 gouge and a fishtailed double bevel and see how you like it..those and a couple of well sharpened chisels will do most things. If you find later you want salmon bends and all the other shapes and sizes then you can go for it but you wont have wasted money on weird unusable chisels in a set.

You could machine that to work right or left in the same tool.

Any thoughts on corner chisels? I've been thinking of buying one, just to get some really nice corners without having to use a registration block every single time. It SHOULD save me from registering on both sides of the corner, right? Or am I just fooling myself? They SEEM to be useful, but wanted some solid advice before committing to one.

Way back in the 70s I was learning how to turn at my Grandfather's shop. Unfortunately, we never got to do a lot, but I was hooked. My dad got a lathe which I played around with until I got married and moved out and for 20 years, didn't have easy access to a lathe. Now I have a WEN 12X18 with a 22" extension bed, and my Dad's lathe. I also bought a mini lathe, but I kind of hate it. My Dad's lathe is being restored to be a dedicated tool handle lathe and the WEN will do whatever else I want.

I grew up using my father's wood vise, which had in interrupted screw. Crank it open until it stops, slide it in or out, then crank it closed - but a bit less than one rotation. Wonderfully convenient. When I set up my first bench 40 years ago I was too spoiled to live without a quick release, so I spent a heap on a Record. That vise is still attached to that bench, but I later inherited my father's old wood vise. It sat around for years, until I needed a bench for the basement, the original being in the garage. I doubt you would think much of that bench. The top is most of a flush, solid core door that I acquired with my house, and the structure is held together with a Simson StrongTie workbench kit. Solid and simple. Utilitarian. That bench also has a big heavy bench vise. Man does not live by wood alone.

When cleaning up, or flattening a frog face, or the frog seats, a bearing scraper can be your best friend.

I’d add a couple of slots horizontally on the top half before the glue up and recess a rare earth magnet in each. These slots would be used to store and protect the unused blade while the other is in use, and both blades when the the plane is on the shelf…

I'm left handed. But I've never complained about living in a right handed world. And I've never met a skilled wood worker that didn't know how to switch hands and wasn't somewhat ambidextrous. But if you got the option, I'll be grateful for the lefty version!😊

You hit the arris at least twice as hard😂 i was actually really looking forward to a reasonable comparison! Can you expand on this maybe but with a control as the smacker?

Also chamfers (and round-overs) reduce fire risk. Slightly. Sharp corners are where fires take hold first.

Not really related, but the algorithm should like a comment anyway: There’s errors in the metric conversions in the tool tote plans. The 6” width is wrong in both diagrams, and a few measurements are short a few mm. (It’s probably fine, because you are meant to cut certain parts long and trim to fit, but if you follow the metric plans for the bottom you’ll start 1/8” shorter) If you want someone to proofread your metric conversions, you could send them all to me. I promise this isn’t a scheme to get all your plans for free.

That's why dimensional lumber has radiuses on all the corners, that doesn't come free. they had to pay extra to do that.
