    I cite my sources and they may differ than other people's accounts, so I don't guarantee the actual accuracy of my videos.
    Back in 1996 INXS Frontman Michael Hutchence would present Oasis with an award for their huge hit Wanderwall at the Brit Awards. But the happy occasion resulted in Oasis guitarist Noel gallagher hurling an insult at Hutchence and INXS and would result in a diss track. That’s what were going to discuss in today’s video.
    At the 1995 MTV European music awards it was reported that INXS frontman Michael Hutchence and Oasis singer Liam Gallagher nearly got into a fight backstage when Hutchence threw a fire extinguisher at Liam following some disparaging remarks he made about his then lover, Paula Yates according to the book INXS: Story to Story the official autobiography. There wasn’t much follow up reporting, but a year later 1996 at the Brit Awards it seemed like it was water under the bridge at least initially. Hutchence who was an Oasis fan would present an award that night to Oasis. Oasis at the time was reeling from the success of their sophomore record what’s the story morning glory. Featuring the hit song Wonderwall the song was nominated for the best video category wand be against take that, pulp, radiohead and blur. Oasis would win the award but as Oasis left the stage noel gallagher hurled an insult at hutchence saying
    , “Has-beens should not be presenting awards to gonna-be’s.” Pretty rough. It was during the time of the Brit awardds that INXS who had started writing what would be their final album 1997’s Elegantly Wasted. The band had come off an extended hiatus after their last album 1993’ Full Moon Dirty Hearts was a commercial disappointment due to lukewarm responses from critics and changing musical tastes.
    Hutchence would tell the album network magazine in 1997 “We really wanted to get off the old carousel for a while,” “As a band, we have recorded an album every 12 to 18 months over the last five or six years. This helped to create a situation resulting in a lot of personal and business friction within the band, as well as the record label. … So, it just seemed like the logical time to take a break.”
    It was sometime after the brit awards that hutchence was in dublin, ireland and was at a bar with bono of u2 when liam gallagher supposedly walked in and got into a verbal altercation with hutchence. Bono kept the peace, butHutchence was so infuriated with the event that he headed back into the studio and added a background vocal to the title track elegantly wasted that said “i’m better than oasis.’ HEres an interview with hutchence asking about the song.
    Hutchence would take his own life in november of 1997 and to those close to him Noel’s remark was said to have humiliated him.
    Noel Gallagher seemed to would discuss the incident in 2000, three years after hutchence death telling uncut magazine…. The second night of The Brits [1996]. We didn't know Michael Hutchence was going to present us with an award. It was the first award of the night and there'd been words said before the ceremony in the papers. So when he come out to present the award, we went, 'Right, these cs [Brits organisers] have stitched us up here, because they know what's going on.' So we decided that, every time we hit that stage, we were just going to give it to everyone, and we f***ing duly did…It wasn't scripted or anything like that. We probably wouldn't have done anything if Michael Hutchence hadn't come out and said his little bit: 'I heard Liam wants to fight me.' We were like, 'Don't f***ing try and pick a fight with us, man, because we're the best at giving verbal abuse,' and off we went.
    WHile the band’d last album with hutchence wasn’t as commercially successful as their earlier works the title track would peak at number 2 on the alternative charts in America.

Look into the hutchence/patsy kensit situation, which may probs pissed off liam.. think there was a lot of back and forth from that and then rumours of Michael wanting to fight liam, hence why liam says "I heard Michael's gonna give my a slap around the face so come on!"

    You need to do one on "The Tragic Story of Toy Matinee and Kevin Gilbert". Toy Matinee only made one album then disbanded. However, it was a highly regarded album that was extremely loved and respected by major musicians. Vocalist/Songwriter Kevin Gilbert had a bunch of projects before and after including a solo career. Sheryl Crow was his girlfriend and played keyboards live for him before she became famous. He unfortunately accidently killed himself via "Autoerotic Asphyxiation", the same way Michael Hutchence of INXS died.

    • @LetsGoMetsGo33
      @LetsGoMetsGo33 Před 2 lety

      @@williamz7011 yeah, Ben would make a good video IMO. Like, he went to a reform school for high school. Troubled kid. Then he found punk and thought “well this is a good place for outsiders like me”, but basically found out it was another cool kid hierarchy, with guys like fat Mike at the top. That’s his songs “cool kids” and “ follow your leaders “. Obviously, it was terrible that he hit some women, but the other hand one of them was pelting him with ice cubes. Leftists like fat Mike will say that women should be treated equal to men, Mike himself has kicked male fans in the head from his behavior. Ben reacts a similar way to someone who happens to be female, and he’s kicked out of the cool kid club which he never really belonged to. He’d be a great video, but he might be too far outside the mainstream for this channel? Rock ‘n’ roll true stories has had some good punk stories before though. A final thought is that it’s ironic that Mike’s feud with Kathleen Hanna was because she felt Mike was a misogynist or sexist (which was his claim against Ben Weasel). Check the NOFX song “kill your Rockstars” and the Le Tigre song “Deceptacon” for more info about that.

    INXS was a stellar band with many memorable hits still played to this day. They were a very tight band live and many bands couldn't touch them on a performance level. Michael seemed like the love child of Jim Morrison and Mick Jagger, one of the last true rock stars. Oasis had a few good songs but became has-beens themselves fairly quickly... isn't it ironic?

      As an Oasis (and INXS) fan, I’d say your characterization is at the very least a little uncharitable. Oasis was to the 90s UK music scene essentially what Nirvana was to the 90s American music scene. And this is reflected in Rolling Stone magazine’s most recent edition of their 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2020, where Oasis’ first two albums are in the top half of the list. The only other bands with two albums released in the 90s on the list are Nirvana, Radiohead and the Chili Peppers. That’s pretty significant even if you don’t respect Rolling Stone which is always able to create the most comprehensive all-time greatest lists with the number of voters related to the industry for which they’re compiling these lists

    The irony of this clip for me is that Noel is my favorite songwriter/musician of all time, and Hutch is my favorite vocalist/performer of all time, as Oasis and INXS are my two favorite bands of all time. As disrespectful as Noel’s comment was, this episode had everything to do with Michael’s relationship with Paula Yates and their scandalous portrayal in the sleazy British media at the time. As Bob Geldof referred to him, Michael was seen as a ‘neo junkie philanderer’, famous for being famous, rather than the gifted performer and sharp lyricist he actually was. In the end, at least Hutch was able to fire back in the backing vocals of Elegantly Wasted: 🎶 I’m better than Oasis 🎵 😂
