- Michael Hutchence interviewed by Paul Yates. Recorded by me on Jan 17th 1986 on Betamax. The betamax tape was faulty, sometimes it played, most times it would not, so on a rare occasion that it did play, I copied it onto VHS & this recording is taken from the VHS copy. I think this was the very first broadcast interview between Michael and Paula. I still have the original and better quality Betamax tape.

Here's the thing. Michael Hutchence was handsome, but didn't necessarily have GQ model good looks. But there was just SOMETHING about him that was immeasurably sexy and magnetic. He just had.....IT. Such a rarity of a human being.

Intersting fact - Michaels brain lesions - were talked of long before Mystify documentary. Think about it - the family would have seen it in the coroner reports as they always had full access. The brain lesions were first talked about by Colin Diamond in July of 98 (Newsherald, News Extra July 26 - "the truth about Michael's millions") , when he called them brain bruises and again in 99 in Vincent Lovegrove's book. The press quickly said it was a lie to counter the lies about Michael's promiscuity that Bob and his press buddies were pushing after Michael died.
Colin had become friends with Paula after Michael died and made sure she got her debts paid off and millions. They had to say it was gone because it would subject to estate taxes otherwise.
One of his financial advisors (Paul) said - in Lovegroves' book - that Tina's insistance that the money to her and his family must include stuff in holding companies, was going to mean 50% would go to taxes and thus take a lot from Tiger and Paula, as well as from everyone else. They tried to say Michael only wanted the cash portion to go to the family but Tina successfully challenged this, agreed to a settlement, the agreed to push the lie of it being stolen.
Bob needed anything other than suicide in the press, where he was the last person to talk to Micahel and he had been tormenting Michael for 3 years. As Puala said 'Michael snapped, we've had 3 years of this. Bob killed my Baby!"
Helena has NEVER said anything about brain lesions and in an interview in the Syndey Sunday herald - April 99 (newspaper.com)- she said she NEVER heard anything of brain lesions and that when he said he got the MRI she wasn't with him
Michael told EVERYone of the concussion back in 93 and that it impacted his olfactory nerves and caused a skull fissures - small crack - no lesions.
Recall Paula originally threatened to sue for the kinky sex death rumor and said there was no sexual activity going on and that the coroner ruled it a suicide - see freelibrary Speaking on Paula's behalf last night, her lawyer Anthony Burton slammed the "scurrilous and grossly irresponsible speculation" that kinky sex played a part in Hutchence's death. He insisted: "There is no evidence whatsoever to support this." The whole story of her screaming about kinky sex at a hotel restaurant to two police detectives, was also proved a lie BOTH former detectives said the article misquoted them. One has a linked in account currently and repeatedly saids that with an ongoing investigation - as it was just after Michael died - even off the record, they would have had to report what she said - and she never said anything of Michael sexual actvity - but kept blaming Bob and his influence in the press.
For 3 months after Michael died she said "Bob killed my baby" and said Bob drove Michael to suicide. She later had to change the story to avoid a law suit from Bob or him taking her kids - which he did anyway. He NEVER let her see her girls after her suicide attempt in 98.
She also didn't have herion in her when she died, It was a trace amount of morphine that woudn't be enough to knock out a kid. Bob had enough influence to change the narrative in the press.
Same with Peaches - when she was buried, articles - still availble online - showed she had nothing in her system. It was later that the Mirror made up and article saying they knew what was at the inquest and then two coroners - who were not peaches coroners - said it was drugs. Look up photos of the private police hired (aka probably actors) taking garage and putting it IN THE SHED with a broken door. They didn't take anything to any labs. It was all for show. Some twitters and instagramers posted screenshots saying her death was actually announced a few days before she was later said to have died, and said she died in London, wehre she had abeen at an event.
Bob wasn't upset about a broken heart over Paula leaving him - he and Jeanne were already together from 94 according to Paula and she accused Bob of having numerous affairs. He was upset that she compared him unfavorably to Michael in her book and then it escalated to jabs in the press - her getting Gerry Agar to say Bob was abusive to counter the negative press against her that she felt Bob was behind.
Bob has for YEARS been trying to distance himself from the fact that he was the LAST person to talk to Michael. there's no police statement from Kym or her boyfriend or from Michelle Bennett. Think about it! The story is that Michelle told him take the day off, that he gave a message to the front desk to tell the manger he wasn't coming in (but didnt call the manger directly?), and the manager supposedly told Martha that he got the message around 8 am - HOWEVER, the band were all waiting for him at the studio when they got the message that he died - around noon. THEY said they received a call from the manager that he was called into the police stations about Michael and they weren't sure why yet. The band were all filmed leaving the studio after they got the news of his death and never said they got a message he wasn't coming in.
Bob knows what he and the press did to Michael and the deflection and hate he's spun for years is now laid bare.
He was absolutely gorgeous and so charming

I was very very lucky to see INXS live three times in the late 80s. He’s extremely talented and the band sounds so amazing live everyone is so talented and I found and Michael’s charisma and magnetism really oozes out and it almost becomes palatable and his bandmates step aside and let that shine

To be honest when it was announced on TV that he had died i absolutely could not believe it and it was as if the world had suddenly shrunk in size in response.

He liked her...Notice at the end of the interview...he was flirting with her, stayed looking at her...If it made them both happy, she should have gotten a divorce and married him and kept her children with her. Maybe she and Sir Bob Geldof could have worked out an arrangement so he could have been with the girls part of the time somehow. It shouldn't have turned out to be so messed up and heartbreaking like it did...
I fully agree. Many people misjudged Paula for ending his life, they liked each other, she left everything to be with Michael. For me, the big culprit was Bob for making it difficult and causing so much confusion.

@@janebraun4482 Geldof had reasons to be bitter. 23 years together is a long time. The problem was Paula wanted them to live in Australia, and I think weekend visitation would have hardly worked, only if Geldof moved to Australia. The fact is he was fearful that if she took them out of the country, he might never have seen them again. He was still their father, no matter whose side you are on. Definitely, none of the three thought about how hard it would be for those four children. They loved both of their parents, I am sure. Michael included, though I doubt his daughter has much memory of him.
@@karenharper2266 There was no way to resolve the matter without taking 'some risk'. If they have a half year Australia, half in England, the risk being Paula not complying. That would not be wise or she could lose entire (half) custody. Certainly too far for 'weekends' but perhaps school year one country, summer the other. As I said lawyers some stand there just to help you fight (unrealistically), others really pull you into reality and get it done. Sad.

INXS was so big at the time. Huge tours in the states as well as Europe. MH stayed pretty humble with the fame and success he found.

Looking at the body language of both, I feel like she is reeling him in. She starts touching her ear, lips, and neck and speaks quietly so he has to lean in. All of this is totally on purpose. Drugs werent a big issue...its what you did when partying....it was part of life...and heroin was prevalent in the 80,s in the Antipodes...
It seems tho, that the drug abuse was spiraling in the last year or 2, especially after Michael went onto 1st generation prozac.
Prozac was over prescribed , and known to cause suicide...
The little happy pill....
Lethal amounts of alcohol, copious amounts of recreational drugs, prescribed drugs...all so dangerous on top of a long term irreversable brain injury....which was found to be severe when he passed...
so regardless that he was with Paula, it would have happened at some stage as his brain injury was causing memory and behavioural issues...
Life after brain trauma is so blimmin unpredictable, especially for someone flying all the time...(airplane physiology, pressure changes when flying, can cause belting headaches)
And Paula may well have found out he was seeing Erin, as the last 2 weeks he was in the US...
We will never know....how the last conversation with Paula was...but he certainly didn't die in a sex act...
He was distraught....heard to be distraught...
Michale was a great talent but the Farris brothers were great songwriters, musicians, they could play anything superbly, whether, it was soul, Funk and Jazz tinged, dance music or straight ahead Rock.

I remember I was picking up a lay -by at David Jones, when I overheard two shop assistants discussing someone's death and I asked them what happened ,and they told me it has been announced that Michael Hutchence was found dead. Very sad. A great band a great talent.

He did... and after they finally hooked up... He didn’t appreciate her manipulative ways... Telling the press where they were all the time and getting paid for that without his knowledge. The last straw was after she had Tiger and insisted she couldn’t bring Tiger to him, because of Bob...which is a lie. It was the other children she couldn’t bring until after Christmas break started. Isn’t it interesting how fast she brought Tiger to him in Australia after insisting that it was Bob’s fault and Michael called and found out the truth... He confronted Paula and told her he wanted to see Tiger... and what Bob had said... Michael told Paula how trapped he felt and that he just wanted Tiger, as he was planning to break up with Paula... She threatened to kill Tiger and then herself if he did this leading to him feeling desperate and killing himself.

Just my opinion. I read someone once said Helena was as boring as a row of tents. Yes she was a strong anchor for him but he had a somewhat flakey unstableness (a lifestyle that afforded too many choices), he was taken with Paula's campy flirty style. the quick witty repartee. He was also drawn by her contacts and connections into the English music scene that he wanted to be a part of. Ended up a bad path. Paula betrayed him with the press. The result was not pretty, he looked dark and unhappy, trapped between the child and Paula's threats. The head injury sent it all Into an emotional spiral at the end.

Yeah, he seemed to have that shaky unstableness. Perhaps it's due to his bohemian upbringing and low self-esteem. Plus he's been travelling whole of his life... from early days of childhood to band tours. I guess he's meeting way too many people, more than he ever wanted to that he somehow did not know how to 'read' people? Which sounds extraordinarily ironic.... No wonder his personality is such a mess of contradictions. Shy introvert with massive sex appeal and charisma. He wanted a family but at the same time he wanted to be free as well. Sigh. That head injury seemed to seal his fate.

Poor MH was depressed & stressed by Paula and Bob. Duran Duran wrote that horrible song ("A lot to answer for" - Oct 14, '97 ) telling Michael to "stop trying to be" and - while later they tried to say it was about drugs - originally they said in interviews that it was regarding his involvement in the custody case. Odd, since the press knew Paula dragged M into it & was getting him to pay her legal bills. The song was released on Oct 14 AND 3 days later poor Michael was seeing another therapist - Dr. Mark Collins. See "Michael Hutchence death explained: the Coroner's account in his own words" Herald Sun. Shortly thereafter, he and Paula decided to try Australia. Conveniently, Duran Duran were awarded the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame after changing the story behind that cruel song to being about drugs - no doubt at Bob's request!!
Her interview 'style' was flirty. I recall she literally threw herself at Terence Trent D'arby during a similar interview in 1987. God only knows what Mr Hutchence saw in her (apart from the obvious)...she'd have fitted in more in NY or LA. Great clip btw 👍🏼
