Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich has had his share of feuds over the year and today we’re going to take a look at some of them.
    #1 Nikki Sixx
Despite both emerging out of Los Angeles, Motley Crue and Metallica were not part of the same circles and by Ulrich and frontman James Hetfield’s own admissions they used their distaste for the glam metal seen to drive their determination. Here’s Ulrich and Hetfield discussing their disdain for Motley Crue and hair bands.
The war of words wouldn’t resurface until 1997 when Ulrich criticized Motley Crue for playing using a backing tape during the billboard awards show. Crue bassist Nikki Sixx responded putting out a statement on an online forum saying
Dear, Sweet, Fat, Balding, Larz (love the make-up, babe!). Taking your ever-moronic soapbox position on a subject that’s none of your fucking business has made you out to be an expletive as usual. Considering that I and Tommy know that your live tapes have been re-recorded and all your instruments were repaired in Pro Tools (and had that balls to lie to your fans and call it a ‘live’ album)…
People in glass houses should not throw rocks! Considering your bullshit to the press, we feel it’s only fair to return the punch! Your such a poseur… Thanks for releasing that ‘load’ of expletive CD of yours… you made more room for us!!”
Unfortunately for the Crue their new album, their first with Vince Neil in nearly 8 years Generation Swine was a commercical and ccriticcal flop. The feud seemed to die down nearly within a few years as Sixx defended Metallica’s album St. Anger against the angry fan reaction and praised the band’s dedication to their live shows during a 2015 interview reminiscing the time both bands shared a festival bill.
    Jason Newsted
The bassist would leave Metallica in 2001 and despite his side project Echobrain being hailed as the main culprit for his departure there was an incident that foreshadowed him leaving the group in the early 90’s. This year newsted revealed to Metal Hammer it was a recording with guitarist Devin Towsend that resulted in some words being exchanged between himself and Lars and James revealingI had just established the Chophouse [studio] in '92, and by '94 we had all the gear. Devin came down at the age of about 22 and was an absolute maniac ... every time he would pick up a guitar, you get, ‘Widdle widdle widdle,’ and you’re like, ‘Dude, where in the hell did that come from? Now play it backwards!’”
It would result in a six track demo with him adding “The guys got wind of it, and Lars said, ‘You gotta come up to the house.’ I didn’t really know what it was for, so I take my bass and go up there. ‘What's up, guys?’ ‘Dude, you know you're in Metallica now, don’t you? You can’t just be making music and sending out tapes to whatever expletive with whichever expletive. You do understand that right. Newsted’s response: “Oh!” He explained that he "didn’t realize at all! I didn’t know about the politics. I was just sharing some metal with my friends! I pretty much broke down on that day in front of Lars and James. I was like, ‘I’m sorry, it won’t happen again!’ And that was the first time." Ulrich would tell Zane Lowe in 2021 f you think about it, Jason is the only member of Metallica who has ever left willingly. And that in itself is a statistic. And the resentment from James and I was just so... You can't do that. You can only leave if we want you to leave. And then we weren't equipped at the time to do a deep dive into why he was leaving. So of course, now you can see 20 years later, it makes complete sense."
Axl Rose - In 1992 Guns N’ Roses and Metallica would tour north americaas part of a co-headlining tour. The tour was drought with cancellations, and a riot in Montreal that was mostly blamedon Guns N’ Roses and their frontman Axl Rose. Guns N’ Roses lew 80% of their income on that tour going on stage late night after night, p

One thing you've missed was an interview with James Hetfield in Metal Hammer magazine back in 1998. They asked him 'Have you ever punched Lars out?' James replied 'Yes, I have. It was back in the early days where we got our first encore. The whole band agreed to play this cover, but when they get back on, Lars goes into a different song, and the band struggled with it. After the encore was finished, I went straight up to Lars and punched him right in the gut and I said 'Don't ever do that again'. Jason Newstead was the greatest member of Metallica because he had the hardest shoes to fill in Cliff Burton, he had to somehow make it work knowing the other 3 members were not only grieving the loss of Cliff but, also now comparing Jason to Cliff and all of the while, Jason just did his thing. Meanwhile during Jason's tenure with the band, he was treated like an outsider. He was never really respected by the band and the fans know it. During the bands' Hall Of Fame induction, it was Jason who got the loudest crowd reaction. These guys did the same damn thing to Dave Mustaine. They hired a mediocre outcast bassist from Suicidal Tendencies and their music has gotten worse. I don't even know if they are a band anymore, they come out with a new release every decade it seems. They’ve all grown up a lot. No one really knows what happened back then except that Dave has admitted he was an alcoholic and a drug addict and there was a lot of tension and drama within the band. I don’t know if it was the right way to dismiss him the way it went down but it sounds like it needed to happen one way of the other. and frankly it’s worked out for all parties involved. there is no way Metallica would’ve stayed together with those 3 in the band; too many egos, too many cooks in the kitchen
Dave has dismissed many people in his own band too so it’s a little hypocritical to hold a grudge for 4 decades when they were all teenagers when it went down. So I disagree, I don’t think they are on the “wrong” side of the beef. There shouldn’t even be a beef at this point

This video has a number of editing issues. Most prominently the Axl rant has strange CC making it hard to follow. What more makes it hard to follow is the monotony of the voiceover, reading the script from top to bottom and adding video afterwards instead of having a cohesive video from the start which then gets dubbed over. I couldn't tell if what was just said was a quote, an editorial remark, a continuation of the story or if you had just started a new one. I had to go back several times. And what's going on in the ReLoad footage clips? Did you watch the video before posting? The captions say "you can only leave if we want you to leave", but the voiceover says "you can only leave if you wanna leave". Well, which one is it? Is this the general quality of this channel?

Met them in Denver (Master of Puppets) tour night before the show. Heard what hotel they were at and me and a buddy went to look for them. Lars was on a phone in the lobby, with a bouncer ("Tiny." a big guy) We kind of stood there tripping out. He saw us, (in our Metallica patched jean jackets) came right up to us.... we talked a bit. He said he just called a cab to go to a bar where the rest of the band were are at. Invited us to go along. We did, but were too young to enter the bar. He tried to get us in saying we were with the band etc. Bouncer said no. We ended up just hanging outside waiting. Soon James, Cliff, and Kirk came out, and Lars introduced us all to them. Making dumb jokes, like "these guys like our horrible music apparently"...etc. Rode back to hotel in the cab with Lars and "Tiny" and hung out with them all on their tour bus for a couple hours. I don't think they would do much differently. They grew up together. Part of the way James plays is because of Lars and after so many years, that's the player he is. Kirk too. You think in terms of who your band mates are and even with a more capable drummer, it would take a while for James to think outside of the Lars box. So, all his riffs would probably be within the Lars framework. James hasn't written anything complex since AJFA. I think even a different drummer would be affected by the Metallica framework and always play in the style of Metallica. But, who knows. It would be interesting.

Joey played true to the song, but also added things that just showed he was a head above Lars behind the kit. I bet the entire band , Trujillo in particilar would benefit.
