    Soundgarden, Courtney love, pavement,
The smashing pumpkins frontman and leader billy corgan has feuded with many bands and musicians over the years. Today let’s take a look at some of his more notable feuds that don’t involve ex-bandmates and if i’ve missed any put them in the comments section below.
    Collective Soul
Collective Soul ascended to prominence in the mid 90’s with their 1994 hit single Shine from their debut album. The song was a huge hit topping the US Mainstream rock charts and it was also a crossover hit peaking at number 11 on the US billboard hot 100.
It was during that the time that Shine took off, The Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan slammed Collective Soul in the press referring to Frontman Roland as a "shameless rip off artist" According to Cleveland.com Corgan was upset over how similar the song sounded to the smashing pumpkins track, Drown. Corgan was so upset that he sued Collective Soul in the mid 90’s but Roland was able to produce a demo of the song that dated back to 1989, which predated the formation of the Smashing Pumpkins. It was rumored that Collective Soul for their second album, which was self titled and came out in 1995 wrote a diss track about corgan in 1995 called Smashing Young Man. While Corgan isn’t named in the track there are lyrics like "synthetic-like," and saying he lives in a "self-lit spotlight
And as recently as 2020 Ed Roland gave an interview to Cleavland.com where he clarified what the song was about saying
everyone thought that because he was busy smack-talking about us all the time -- which didn't bother me at all. It's just a fun song, and the next thing you know Billy starts coming at me again and I'm like, "Dude! No, no no..." And finally, there was one point where I just said, "Yeah, it was written about him, sure. Whatever he wants to think, I don't care." But I love Smashing Pumpkins. If I ever met Billy, I'd tell him what a great musician, great songwriter he is. I've got nothing negative to say. I've got other things to do in my life than to bitch about people
The Smashing Pumpkins would surprisingly cover “Shine” at a show in 2010 briefly and heres what happened..” Whoa, heaven let your light shine down. I hate that song. What a rip off of my band. Fast forward to
2019 and Billy Corgan was answering fan questions on Instagram when one fan asked the frontman if he ever made peace with collective soul to which he responded ‘F*** Collective soul, now and always.’
    Soundgarden
Billy Corgan gave an interview in 2012 with Philstar just before playing a show in the Philippines where he singled out the band Soundgarden who he labeled as a nostalgia act for making money off playing their old tunes. Soundgarden would reunite in 2010 after a 13 year break. Corgan would say there are bands that are essentially coming back to only make money playing their old albums &maybe somewhere in the back of their minds they are thinking that their might be a future. I'm not in that business obviously. .I condemn anybody whose in that business, but doesn't admit he's in that business. When Soundgarden came back and they just played their old songs. Great! Iwas a fan of Soundgarden. But call it for what it is. They are just out to have one more round at the till he'd say.
The same month Corgan appeared on a a radio station and seemed to indicate that it was Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell who started the feud the frontman told an interviewer in 2007 that he didn't consider the Smashing Pumpkins reunion at that point in timeas he put it to be legitimate. In 2007 Corgan had reunited with original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin but not the rest of the original band, leading many in the press and in their fanbase to criticize Corgan. Corgan would claim in that same interview
An Cornell would retaliate a few months later in 2012 telling ABC Radio
"When Billy Corgan was completely broke, I got him a movie deal with [director] Cameron Crowe where he made $40,000. He was very happy about that, and he was specifically happy about the $40,000. So

I live just outside Chicago, and I've visited his tea shop, Madame Zuzu's plenty of times.
I've never spoken to him, but I've seen him there on plenty of occasions. Despite Smashing Pumpkins playing a pretty important role in my life, he's always seemed incredibly busy or with his family, so it just never felt right. It was enough for me just to be hanging out in the area. Most of the time I see him ordering from his own place, chatting up locals, being a very nice person.
After the tragedy that struck Highland Park, the town where Madame Zuzu's is at, he went right to work with charity work to help the town.
He could have chosen to build some cash-in franchise style restaurant in the heart of the city like Michael Jordan, Mike Ditka, Jimmy Buffet, etc, etc. He could have cashed in on HIS name for himself. But he chose to build a small little shop that helped build up a community. I'm sure he could easily do both and it wouldn't be an issue- but the point is he could have just chosen to NOT do any of that.
But he supports local artists by USING his name to get people to check out bands/singers/artists that others might just walk right on past.
I don't doubt that Billy Corgan has probably ruffled some feathers in the past, but to me he seems like quite the class act.

He's been in the music business for decades and never had a sex scandal, drug or rehab scandal, has always been gracious to his fans and is a devoted father and husband. He took his little boy on stage and asked the crowd to sing happy birthday to him, that was so touching. What he doesn't flaunt in everyone's faces is all the charity work he's done and shows he's done for charity that he didn't boast about. He's a good person and he's got balls of steel. Lots of people thought they could bully him and push him around and that's why he had to be a dick sometimes, same with Thom York, he had to stand his ground and I respect that. For most of us that listen to them it’s the era from the basement jam sessions to Adore that we really reminisce on and want to hear songs from and to be honest it’s really the Siamese Dream/Mellon Collie era songs that people really want to hear and there’s nothing wrong with that. Billy’s self-importance has always been the curse of this band and Jimmy ‘s always been the musical backbone. Many great artists are eccentric and can come off as rude, but fact is there is always another side of the story and context which quotes from people that have had negative run ins with him doesn't really tell the whole story. You can't have this many negative accounts from regular people, bandmates, and fellow rockstars, including outright feuds with people and just chalk it up to "there are two sides of the story".
Corgan probably *isn't* the bad guy in every dispute, but especially *given the history of his own freakin' band* at the minimum, he's conflict-prone.

1994 Lollapalooza. I was really looking forward to seeing Smashing Pumpkins. I really enjoyed the studio work done on Gish and Siamese Dream. Not sure if it was Billy, the band, or the sound crew, but most of the crowd tuned out after the second song. Nothing sounded good. What was produced in the studio was hard to imagine that was who was on stage that night. Billy started yelling at the crowd. "FU." "If you haven't noticed, we are the number one band in the world." The crowd went from disinterested, to booing the band off the stage. It got so crazy. The crowd wouldn't let up after Billy fueled the fire with slurs of how horrible the audience was. Billy and the band walked off the stage. Ten minutes later the band came back to play a few more songs and call it a night. I felt bad for them. Some nights things just aren't going right. Rising to the top at that fast of a pace can take a toll. Billy and Chamberlin hardly spoke to each other. Depression, alcohol, drugs; none of that really helps that much. It just lets time go by without a flinch.
