@@inducedbycoffee yes apparently the active position! But it seems Magnus uses his intuition a lot, because he said, "I don't know what to say--it's just a mess". But then AFTER NxR, Magnus is "very happy with what he just did". He's the equivalent of 2 pawns down (exchange) but intuits that his active position can do damage before his opponent can mobilize. But his opponent does mobilize, but apparently Magnus's subtle yet aggressive pressure wins the day.

hes not an entire rook down though because the knight is completely closed off from the rest of the game and can be taken for free a couple moves later. so hes just down the exchange facing an attack against the world #1. the game ends with magnus up 2 whole pieces and white checkmated so its clear magnus knew the rook was worth exchanging. if it were a classical game with perfect play maybe but this is blitz vs magnus no chance

after the castling and the King move from C1 to C2, why not play the knight to E4 and then take the pawn on C3? Queen can't take otherwise it will get taken by the G7 bishop, King can't take otherwise it will be in check from the C4 queen. That way the Knight can attack the D1 Rook and the A2 pawn (which can be taken for free otherwise he would lose the Queen). I get that the Knight is covering the B7 pawn, but the A8 Rook can be used to cover.

    Option 1: Ka3 c2 check Kb2 Rb8 check Ka1 Qc3 check Qb2 Qb2 checkmate
Option 2: Ka1 Nc2 check Kb2 Rb8 checkmate. After Nc2 check you have to go Qc2 give up the queen and your basically winning.
