It should be mentioned that, for quite a long time, the Komodo dragon’s deadly bite was actually quite a mystery. The inside of the lizard’s mouth is so full of dangerous bacteria and stuff that we couldn’t tell if it was the venom or illness that was deadlier and thus the true power of their bite. It was only relatively recently that we gained the technology to look into their venom better and discover that, although the germs in the Komodo dragon’s mouth are certainly strong enough to cause fatal illness, the venom is much worse.
That's how they earned the dragon in their name
I can remember the days when nature channels worked on the theory that it was the bacteria in a Komodo dragon's mouth that slowly killed the animals, and they just followed it around until it was unable to walk. It's so much fun seeing the advancements in knowledge and understanding happening within such a small period of time

Until you recently learned that their prey getting sick and dying is the result of infecting their own wounds, not venom or others.
Their main prey? Water buffalo. Where do they seek cover? Mud pits.

Matpat and the theorists - not enough people know about the httyd books, they are one of my special interests - I HIGHLY reccomend you read them or listen (the audiobooks are on youtube). Hello
There are 3 movies of how to train your dragon right what was he talking about 19 seasons ? At 0:57
This is why I love the How to Train Your Dragon universe, it's different dragons are made in such way that they make sense in one way or another and their bodies reflect that.
Not many of the dragons from the movie are actually in the books, (which I prefer) but I would love to see a monstrous nightmare in the books, just l would love to see an actual small toothless in the movies. (Toothless is a seadragonus giganticus maximus at a very young age, and seadragonus are tiny when they are young, tiny when they are old, and ABSOLUTELY giant when in the prime of their life).
As as father of 4, I can honestly say I always enjoy these movies and the series with my kids...because of the science. The writers of this IP are fantastic at doing their homework.
HTTYD actually acknowledges the gas build up into fire breath as something dragons do. In the first movie, after hiccup and Toothless fly for the first time, a type of dragon called terrible terrors start to spit fire at toothless by building up gas into their mouth. But tootless shoots a small spark into the mouth before the dragon is ready, causing the gas to explode in the dragon's mouth. They show that because it sets up the ending of the final battle, where hiccup and toothless use the same trick to beat the red death (the big bad dragon).
matpat can literally bust out the most insane theories that actually make sense, almost everyday on 4 channels! also streaming every other time. That is a lot of work in very little time! Mad respect for this mad man
And his son and wife look like they really love him. How does he do it? Glad for the guy.
he probably isnt the main person behind the theories anymore

this turned out way more interesting than I thought it was going to be
Matpat and all his channels feel like smarter and a waaaaay better mythbusters, where the 'myths' are so much more cool and do not involve using dynamite every two episodes😂
MatPat became the Wild Kratts at the end of this episode with the "we overlook how awesome our real world is"
Lol
Lmao
@SYED SHRQ WHY HELLO THERE, OLD SPORT
Ah, nostalgia.
Knew someone would put that there. Glad to know I wasn’t the only one.
I think MatPat has redeemed himself here with this one. His last HTTYD theory was about how you can't actually train a dragon but proving they can breathe fire has brought him back into my good graces.
it was also kind of annoying how he viewed the dragons as slurpish lizard instead of more active and smarter creatures they really are
This man goes though weeks of hard work for theories about How to train your Dragon.
Hi MatPat. Great video from the whole team as usual, I love Dragons too. Something to add about fire dragons, in the movie Reign of Fire starring Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey. The dragons in that movie have very detailed biological details that explain how they breathe fire. In their necks, they have two glands that produce different chemicals. They then spit the two chemicals out at the same time. And when it combines and gets exposed to the air, it ignites forming napalm. I always loved the dragons in Reign of Fire, and the way they were designed. If you guys on the channel haven't seen it yet. I recommend it. It's in my opinion, very underrated. Maybe you guys could make a video on the movie sometime. Keep up the good work and have a great rest of the day.
I remember that one, though most of the details I recall of it have faded with time. It's been so long since I've actually seen it, so my memory requires a refresher.
This video topic is actually something I've thought about for a few months for a personal project of mine. The way I've been rationalizing the Bewilderbeast's ice attack is by using super cooled pure water, like those videos of freezing cold bottles of liquid water flash freezing when they get hit. I had imagined their biology could filter out particles from the water (which they could use for nutrition to help get so big like a whale) and then store that pure water in an organ somewhere to be spat out later. Them being a tidal class dragon might also help with this as having the water all around them could help cushion the super cooled water and keep it from freezing inside them. They could potentially control the amount of water they release too to give a little puff of water that would freeze into ice crystals in the air almost like snow like we see with Hicup and Valka
That’s so cool!
Yes, fellow httyd nerd!!
I'd love to see a part 2 to this video, talking about other dragons from the franchise, like the Fireworms, the Death Song, the Gronkle, the Flightmare, the Changewing, and the Razorwhip.
But they aren't a bot???
The best part of the channel is the editing hasn’t changed in 7 years
Fantastic
I love httyd so much, and seeing a recent theory from you a day after I got hit with httyd nostalgia is amazing and exciting
MatPad talking about Critical Role and LOVM literally made my day. To see these two worlds collide is absolitely amazing
and he complimented it ❤😁
I want to see Mattpat play dnd now
Get him on critical role as a guest!!
I love matpad
I feel like lightning breath would be less of a single beam of lightning since, like matpat said, the dragon wouldnt have the ability to alter your charge, just it's own but to such a degree that it would be more like lightning everywhere randomly, trading electrons with literally anything and everything it could.
Tesla coil dragon
For a visual example, see King Gidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. There's one scene where Gidorah absorbs electricity from a nearby transformator station, and then fires a lightning storm that destroys all planes around it.
I sometimes like to write down some fantasy dragons just for fun, maybe sprinkle in some science but it’s still just a quick pastime. I recently wrote down about a dragon that first sprays its victim with copper dust (again, just a hobby lol) and THEN throws electric charges at them. Basically just ensuring that at least some shock reaches their prey.
@@Whydoiexisthere- Very nice, you should make a variation of it that uses magnesium dust or something for a fiery explosion.
My favorite franchise ever, this made me so happy ❤️
I appreciate you making this. I've thought about whether or not fictional dragon powers would be possible (got to the dragon arc of Fairy Tail lol)
My favourite part of the dragon breathes in HTTYD is how even dragons of the same breath type produce it different. A Nadder has a fire breath that looks like a large volume of sparks while a Nightmare has a typical flame breathe.
Along with the diversity of dragons in the HTTYD franchise, I also love the little quirks of behavior and biology in each dragon, like how all dragons have a limited amount of fire they can spew before they run out, how small dragons like to chase lights much like a cat chasing a laser, or how dragons can combust internally if the gas in their mouth is ignited before they're ready to fire.
It is a cool decision that the Zippleback’s two heads serve a fire breathing purpose, one breathes flammable gas (probably methane) while the other uses it’s teeth to create a spark and ignite the gas
At 3:27 it jitters, but on the whole another perfect video from matpat
This dude can literately turn anything into a theory. We love you MatPat!
i don’t think i’ve ever heard a scarier sentence than “live action remake of how to train your dragon”
Its going to be hard to get an actor for Hiccup, especially with how iconic Jay Baruchel's voice is for Hiccup across all HTTYD media
I can still see the OG VA like Gerard Butler (Stoic) being a good fit for live action Stoic but its hard for the other characters with how iconic they've been portrayed in the animations
It’s a no from me.
We don’t want it- I think the Nine Realms is proof enough that the OG stuff was the perfect franchise and put a bow on the ending nicely. I feel like anything new will dampen and cheapen an already amazing thing 😭
Same here. When I heard that, I literally screamed “No! Why?!?!”
They could always go with a more book-acurate idea
Matpat can find a scientific explanation to almost anything lol, good one as usual i kinda wanna watch this movie now
We actually have information of what type of fire breath or the material they are made of in some dragons from EXTRAS, The Book Of Dragons and more.
The Monstrous Nightmare has Kerosene in it’s fire and the monstrous nightmare has Kerosene Gel on its skin and that’s how it can light itself on fire.
The Deadly Nadder has a Magnesium type fire.
Gronckles and Hotburples have the fire type of Heptaine/Oxygen + Rock = Lava Attack.
Hideous Zipplebacks have Ammonium Nitrate mixed with Anyhrous Hydrazine which basically means gas ignited with a spark.
Night Furies have plasma blasts.
Terrible Terrors have Propane.
Thunderdrums have Sonic Blasts.
Timberjacks have oil based fire.
And for the rest of 70+ dragons’ fire type can be generically named like fire or electricity
So happy to see Matt take the time to go over a relatively older series. Great to see such a large part of my childhood theorized lol. Also Hiccup being a nerd over the physiology of dragons already is kinda funny
Honestly I’m glad we are getting an HTTYD video. The movies and the shows literally defined my childhood.
Shout out to you mattpat, I actually came here to comment that for once I actually had previous knowledge on how animals could breathe fire, from a documentary I watched on dragons as a child, and that same beetle came up, and my heart is so happy you found that, I love your channels, you inspire me to learn new things and ask new questions and test hypotheses, I’m grateful for it
FINALLY I’ve watched every single episode of How to train your dragon at least 10 times I’ve watched it so much more than anything else and I’ve been waiting for you to make a video on it.
One interesting thing is that the franchise acknolges that the different dragons have their breath attacks as different chemical reactions such as toothless shoots an oxygen based plasma ball, the monsterous nightmare lights a gel based secreation, and the nadder has a magnesseum based flame
I am SO happy to see that Matpat is doing a HTTYD theory, and HTTYD was my childhood, but something I would've liked to see in this video would've been the Deathsong. Like, spitting amber that is almost impossible to break as it hardens? Gives me goosebumps.

oh there's a bunch of dragons that would be interesting to try and explain. i wanna know how the smothering smokebreath and death song work too
The FlightMare is said to simply paralyze its foe with FEAR.
The DeathSong amber is some liquid that solidifies instantly when exposed to oxygen.
@Bruh🧨 i'm pretty sure the flightmare was explained to not actually do it with fear if i remember correctly. a real life explanation would probably be some sort of nerve agent? (eg topically-acting cholinergic blockers)

Its actually crazy how much effort was put into httyd to somewhat accurately depict dragons
11:10 That Snap! 😂😂😂
I need you to make a serious about motordrome each episode is packed full of lore
The timing on this upload is pretty funny, my partner has been showing me the TV series recently since I only ever watched the movies as a kid. Then the other day we saw a Toothless cake in a store lol.
at last...a scientific episode. not as much calculating and formula as in the good old days, but still far better than those "let's basically just talk about this" episodes. pls keep it up!
No, it is a let's talk about this episode. Thunderdrums don't create the sound by closing their mouths. They create them by opening their mouths and screaming with their giant lungs
In the bonuses of the secpnd movie's dvd, we actually get a closer look at the dragon's abilities, including their breaths. For example, we learn that fire-breathing dragons like Astrid's use magnesium, others molten rocks, and others simply turn massive amounts of water into ice directly as it exits their mouth. Pretty neat i'd say
Loved the video! Biology and Animals are some of my favorite things, and especially love dragons.
I also want to say it would great/funny if you guys do a CoryxKenshin Lore video.
Always enjoy the content for years now another banger
And what's scarier about Komodo dragons, they can stalk their prey for miles upon miles. There's a story I heard where a guy was on an island very close to Indonesia and he unfortunately caught the attention of a Komodo dragon and it just kept stalking him even after several miles where he had to climb a tree. And even then I'm pretty sure they're great climbers.
Baby komodo dragons spend their young lives in trees until they get larger! Adults would make an easy snack of them and the adults are usually to heavy to get up into the branches the babys sit on
7:13 it would be cooler if I didn't see it coming, you've used that gag about 1,115 times in your past videos.

9:16 💀 💀
C'mon man it's not that😂
In regards to the Electric attacks, I like the way that Monster Hunter handles it for the elder dragon Namielle. Namielle uses electric attacks by generating electricity through its skin but it hits it long distance by covering its surroundings in a highly conductive liquid it secretes. It can then charge its electricity through the liquid to shock anything and everything in the liquid.
but another thing for Matpat to theorize on is how Toothless's species is descripted of having such a lighting and deathly fire breath
It’s Plasma, not fire.
@@bruhtnt4258 k
@@bruhtnt4258 Actually make sense...
This is genuinely amazing
Going back to the lightning attacks the skrill uses a similar concept it absorbs lightning to release as a blast however every time the skrill would blast it would always hit something metal for instance toothless's tail or in race to the edge spitelouts helmet so matt u have to give credit for adding that bit of technical accuracy
5:14 they really should’ve just called it a light saber
Would be neat for Matt to make more science videos on the Film Theory channel like this, they're really interesting and I've been missing 'em
They forgot about the night fury's plasma breath, and the fact that there are breath types(magnesium for the Nadders, methane for red death etc) but you can't get too specific in a channel with diverse fandoms, so overall great video
If anything, a giant dragon like the Bewilder Beast would be perfect for dealing with cold. It's huge size means it's volume to surface ratio is better at lowering heat dispersal into the environment.
OH MY GOD IVE WAITED FOR SO SO SO LONG FOR AN HTTYD EPISODE !!!
Also the “we’re theorists, it’s an occupational hazard” reference to the “we’re Vikings, it’s an occupational hazard” is awesome!!

Yo let’s goooo! I always love how MatPat uses science to help explain even the craziest of theories.❤
Idk if it’s just me, but I think fantasy series like HTTYD are even more enjoyable if they have a scientific explanation, but still keep an air of mystery.
(EW BOTS! Sorry I hate those guys)
Matpat some of the dragon’s explanations for how they create there breath attacks are on the dvds for the movies with them explaining how they create said breaths including the elements used in making them.
Hi MatPat! Love your videos so much!
I hope this gets to someone who will take the time to read this.
I have a film theory for you!
What does Stripe and Trixie Heeler do for a living? A Bluey theory!
There is an episode called Faceytalk in season 3 where Bluey and Bingo FaceTime their cousins Muffin and Socks. Mayhem ensues and Muffin is running away from her dad, Stripe, and she runs past, like, 7 hallways and 25 different doors. She also says “we have a lot of couches,” and they have a nice outdoor pool.
Bandit is an archeologist and their brother Rad works on an oil rig, but Stripe’s (or his wife Trixie) occupation is never outright revealed.
Bluey has a lot of subtle hints within the show on the L O R E, but that’s probably one of the top Bluey mysteries!
you've already made my day, I never would have expected a theory video over my absolute favorite childhood movie movie
dude this show is my entire childhood and im so happy to see you cover it!!!
You should do a theory on the "welcome home" website arg, its like a kids show that was archived and kinda gives Sesame Street feels but with secrets and horror hidden in the website.
I think there was a study on electric eels that showed that they could use their shocks to direct prey closer to them to make stunning them easier
5:40 Merica' f- yeah!
There's no franchise that I miss and LOVE more than HTTYD. No other series makes me feel as happy or complete when watching it
