Indiana Jones is BACK for one last ride in the Dial of Destiny! But one question that’s been on our minds is whether Harrison Ford would have ACTUALLY survived all of Indie’s wild adventures… but more specifically whether he would survive the infamous fridge scene. You know, the one where Indiana Jones survives a literal nuclear explosion by hiding in a refrigerator?! Put on your hats and grab your whips because today it’s finally time to put the question to rest.

It's possible that the "holy grail" was actually a Fountain of Youth-type of drink that could keep Indi young. It's also plausible that the drink was not actually something that could keep Indi young, but that it instead healed him or saved him from a life-threatening situation. @@vijayanand6650depends on how hard it hits the ground. The initial impact likely killed most of the momentum and depending on how hard the ground was it could either be fatal or (barely) survivable. If Indy relaxes his muscles it increases his chance of surviving as well. A man was ripped out of his home by a tornado and landed a quarter mile away completely unharmed because his muscles went totally slack. People have fallen from miles above earth and survived because of significant cushioning. It's feasible that if the ground Indy lands on is more like stereotypical sand opposed to hard earth, it could cushion the impact Enough to allow Indy to survive. Indy potentially going slack and other factors like additional objects on the ground breaking up the impact also help.

I knew that about the fridge in the movie (while watching, because I'm old enough to have heard stories of kids still dying when I was young. Poor people didn't buy new fridges if the old one still worked, so fridges like that were still around in the 70s.) But the movie made it so the impact broke the door hinges, which though less likely than radiation was still possible. My thought was that he would have broken bones & maybe internal injuries from the fridge being thrown. But that movie takes place after he & his dad drank the water from the Grail cup, so they have magical quick healing for who knows how many years? The Grail guardian lived for centuries in the cave with no food or water after 1 drink. Surely by then Indy knew that low oxygen & blast injuries were a risk, but he can only die of very old age. Thus his plot armor means he was right to risk that he might get stuck in the fridge for a bit.

The rolling would have plausibly lessened the force of the impact. I see a lot of people comparing it to an elevator dropping, but that's not really the case as an elevator dropping goes straight down. Again, it's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop, and the fridge doesn't have a comparatively sudden stop. That being said, if you listen carefully, you can hear the latch when the door falls open, so somehow neither the latch nor the hinges broke against all odds, so Indy should still be trapped.

There's a lot of safety in elevators to prevent freefall, including redundant lift mechanisms and breaking systems, even large Springs to absorb impact over a longer time if freefall does occur. The fridge fall is far more dangerous than any modern certified elevator. It's probably closer to a high speed car crash with old cars free of modern crumple zones and airbags. In other words, fairly deadly.

Hey matpat and team theorists I have a few suggestions for future videos
Game theory - could you actually launch a personal far away with only your vouce like in skyrim (basically how fast would your breath need to be to generate enough force to launch someone and how would that affect your throat, mouth and ears (i think that would be an easy video for austin to make))
Film theory - what would be the real life conscequences from flash/superman going so fast around the earth that it would go back in time (in this case we all know that such a thing would not turn back time so basically what would be the conscequences uf out of nowhere the earth started spining to the other side
Food theory - the 5 seconds rule, is your food still safe for consumption if it has fallen in the ground for less than 5 seconds? How fast would the germs transfer from the ground to your food? And how much time do you actually have until that food isnt fit fir safe consumption
Style theory - does having a pet help you get a gf/bf? Ive seen various posts saying that having a cat or dog makes you look more attractive to others. Some of those posts were more realistic saying that it makes you look more caring or responsible and such not just out right more attractive. Others say that having a dog can help cuz when walking with them you have more chances to meet people, be them approaching you because they like dogs or if they have a dog and they just start interacting sometimes leading to conversation and pissible relationship
Those are my suggestion, i dunno if you could concider having a pet a "style" but if by style you dont mean only clothes, makeups and hairstyles but anything that can make you look atractive or help you express yourself in a visual way than i guess it counts

I was mostly worried about the impact that Indi would experience while inside the fridge. People can die from sudden impact like car accidents very easily and the reason why we started making cars with "crumple zones" was to increase the time of impact to lessen injuries. There is no crumple zone in the fridge and it impacts the ground hard multiple times.

  • @zneuger6746
    @zneuger6746 Před 10 měsíci

There's one thing you forgot to examine in this: the impact and rolling of the fridge. I don't think Indy could have survived this as well as he did (not even a broken bone) because of the amount of space shown inside the fridge as he exits it. He would have jostled around a lot, and slammed against the insides of the fridge as it hit the ground, bounced and rolled. Secondly, assuming he survived that, there's no way the mechanical latch would have led to him suffocating inside the fridge, as the sheer impact force of a nearly 1,000 pound hollow metal box with Indy inside, with the weak points the fridge has (door hinges and latch), it would have almost certainly caused enough damage the latch and hinges that the door could easily have been opened from the inside, provided the door wasn't completely ripped off during impact.

Yeah, the impact of the fridge hitting the ground would have killed him. I’m more perplexed at how, in the first movie, Indy climbed onto a diving U-boat then, hours later, appeared on the dockside of the secret pen, AHEAD of the submarine’s arrival at the island. He could not have opened the hatch on the conning tower because that closes from the inside, and the bridge is directly underneath. The implication is that he held his breath for x number of hours then swam underwater for half a mile at more than 4 knots and clambered onto the dockside without any guards spotting him. now that is real suspension of disbelief.

You seem to have never touched one of those old fridges if you think an adult's kick could effect them. These were old-school fridges that were designed to last forever. Not modern plastic rubish.

You do know that metal is tougher than human bones, right? For example, you can't kick your way out of hand-cuffs, and they're held shut with a tiny baby metal latch. The latch on an old fridge would by MUCH bigger and bulkier than that in hand-cuffs. We're talking about a fridge that was made back when ALL products were designed be robust, and to last 100 years, regardless of rough treatment. A door that had a scary "thunk" when you slammed it shut, like the love-child of a WW2-tank and an iron-maiden. A door than NEEDED to be slammed, or it would just bounce back in your face and knock you off your feet.
I doubt that modern kids would have the upper-body-strength required to use one of those old-school fridges, even if the latch had been completely removed. There's more metal just in the door than you've prolly seen in your lifetime. You'd get scared at the sight of it, and run off to the occ-health'n'saftey lady.

I used to think "What kind of trashy trailer park kids play around old broken appliances?"

  • @Matthew-kg8nl

Bob Zemeckis was the first to propose “nuking the fridge”, all the way back in the early 80s-it was meant to be the means of powering Doc Brown’s time machine in the 1st draft of BTTF.
Since the film studio didn’t want to risk kids climbing into legacy fridges and getting locked in (a la a very special episode of Punky Brewster) since many of those 1950s era pre-magnet fridges were still in use in the early 80s, the idea was scrapped. Instead we got the iconic DeLorean time machine.
Both Spielburg and Lucas (through ILM) were connected to the BTTF trilogy. By 2008, the danger of kids in fridges was long passed (even the one Indy used in 1957 Nevada wasn’t in compliance with the 1956 safety regulation).
My theory is that Zemeckis’ scrapped idea was brought back from the dead by Spielberg or Lucas. But hey, that’s just a theory… a FRIDGE THEORY.

Honestly the fridge door must have broke after experiencing the shockwave and the impact to the ground. Still, Indi is very lucky in the scene but don't forget he has a lot of plot armour since the start of the series. You can literally argue that action scenes from the first trilogy are senseless because how lucky Indi seems in all of them, like the tank scene in the last crusade which had him continuously escape near death in multiple cases which is kind of the whole appeal of the action scenes in my opinion.

To me, the fridge scene is explained because he drank from the holy grail, making him effectively immortal. Indy never dies, just lives to an old age. The movie holds a special place in my heart, not because it was good, but because it was the last movie we watched as a family before my parents split for good.
Also, basing the weight on a federal fridge, which weighs around 250 lbs, your numbers are a little skewed in indy's favor.

In the second movie, Indiana and his friends are riding a mine cart along its track (which I assume is the inspiration for all those mine cart levels in Donkey Kong Country). At one point, a really wide gap in the track over a large crevasse appears. The mine cart leaps over the gap and lands perfectly on the track on the other side. It is utterly implausible, but I've never heard anyone ever complain about it, and it just seems strange to me that people are okay with it but so skeptical of the scene here.
