You’ve heard it said before: I’m so hungry I could eat a horse. Of course, it’s just an exaggeration. But you KNOW we couldn’t just leave it at that. Where does the phrase come from? And could you ACTUALLY eat a whole horse? Let’s find out!
*Disclaimer: No horses were harmed in the making of this episode and Theorist does not condone actually eating horses. This episode is for educational purposes only.

How hungry are you
Whole horse!?!?!
The phrase originated to mean a person is so hungry that they could do something so irrational as to eat the animal they are using to travel, because in those times people mainly traveled by horse.
Thank you for telling us that information.
That is not unheard of, that travelers has to butcher their horses for surviving.

He's already done this but it isn't a food theory, it is an old film theory episode made way before the 3rd channel released. Video title is 'Film Theory: Ghostbusters - HOW MANY calories is the stay puft marshmallow man?' released about 7 years ago.

MatPat, it has recently come to my attention that Grimace is a tastebud??? that alone is bizarre for a mascot but it begs the question how does he function?? Does he taste the ground he walks on? How would he enjoy a birthday meal? And would it be possible for a tastebud to live and function in the way Grimace does?
A purple tastebud named Grimace. That raises SO many red flags.

Food theory idea: does chocolate actually cure period cramps? And in the video you wouldn’t have to just talk about chocolate you could talk about all kinds of foods and how they affect women when they’re on their periods and which foods actually help and which ones make the cramps worse also to make it even better, you could have Stephanie guest star in the episode. I know I’m a genius. Thank you very much.😂❤
First to like 👍 lol, never done that, this I would like to know the answer
It makes women want to murder ppl less. I call that a win
I always got the impression it was just a comfort thing. Like, it doesn't do anything physically, it just makes you feel better emotionally.
Or ice cream can cure anything except lactose intolerance.
AFAB here. I think it's more of a craving satisfaction thing, more than a "cure" for period cramps. Because when I get my period, it's usually a nice shower that relieves my pain, not a bar of chocolate.
I eat a decent amount of chocolates during my periods, too, but I don't notice any difference.
Fun fact, they eat horses in iceland and when me and my parents visited, my mom was horrified my late husband had partaken 😅 He grew up with it though. I definitely never tried it!
In kazakhstan we eat horses too
we also do in Switzerland, Austria and parts of Germany
I always assumed it was like saying "I am so hungry I could eat my car."
And a horse is more useful as a form of transportation than for food.
My farts are better than Matpat's farts.
I'm so hoongry, I could eat an octorock.
That's literally what the original saying means.. Like come on MatPat, "Horse behind saddle"
That obviously refers to a person riding a horse while considering it as an option to eat instead of trying to search for other sources of food. The only logical reason for that phrase is for the person to have a saddle between horse and them.
@@DelPlays "I could consume mine transport and companion, leaving me stranded and lonely to sate mine hunger."

Me hearing matt talk about Poles eating horse meat for the nTH time: 💀
Some people did eat it in the XX century, some found it absolutely disgusting(work animal/companion).

When I lived in west central Mexico we ate horse tacos regularly. It is kinda sweet and the texture is leaner than beef. I think it's weird how we differentiate meats, how some animals are okay to eat and others are not.
Funny enough, I'm from Mexico and never (knowingly) had horse. Maybe it was because I was in the city. We did joke, however, that particularly tough meat was likely horse or dog meat.
In Polish, this phrase exists too, but it says "I could eat a horse with its
hooves" (which sounds a lot better in Polish) which I would say makes more sense
It makes sense to me. It's just being so hungry you would eat a horse whole.
As a Belgian I can say its complicated. Some people (mostly horse racers) absolutely hate the idea of eating horse. Other people like me think its ok.
Specialty from vilvoorde
I'm an American living in Belgium. My Belgian husband loves horse steak but even after 20 years here I still can't touch it. I had horses when I was a kid. My brain still holds them in the same category as our two dogs. Nope, no way ..not going there. Ever. It would be as bad as chowing down on one of our fur kids.
@LadyDragonRain2225 The funny thing is that my grandpa has horses but still likes to eat horse, but i guess it just depends from person to person
@@bucketman319it's like having a pet pig on a farm but still eating bacon😂😂😂😂
Yea I also noticed people who live in the city are way more disgusted by the thought of eating horse meat. While in the country side where i live its more then okay, people even recommend it if you're having stomach issues.
I had always assumed this saying was from a time when peoples' horses were their livelihood. It's kind of like a "I am prepared to eat my car," vibe.

@@frostrangerofthefrozenrelm well horses are a lot more athletic than cows, I don't recall ever eating horse but I would expect it to be considerably tougher.

In Kazakh culture it is widely spread tradition to eat a heavily salted horse meat(Kaz be the name of it) on the day that marks the beginning of spring(March 22nd). Even though Mongolians mainly disregard the idea of eating a horse because traditionally it is our friend and spiritual saviour to Nomadic culture, we do in fact eat Horse meat sometimes. How does it feel to eat like a hyena? 😂
The amount of horse puns for Factor. I laughed as I was laying down for bed. Well done, well done.
Actually I’ve always wondered why eating horse meat was such a taboo in the Anglo Saxon world. I’m Italian and in the part of Italy in which I was born, the common way to eat it is raw or as a stew. So it’s quite enlightening how, at least in the USA, horse meat was made unsuitable for consumption because they practically poisoned it.
I practically lived off of it when I went to Flight College in French Canada. It’s now my favourite meat. I took some back to English Canada and lots of people were scared to try it
As a belgian I did grow up with horse meat being fairly normal. Though it is rather pricey and was therefor not something we ate a lot. It's more of a delicacy that my grandma would get whenever we were coming to visit for lunch to put in with the charcuterie board XD sliced VERY thinly cause the flavour is quite strong.
I'm also from Belgium and I'm like vaguely aware that people eat horse, but personally I've never had it and I haven't really seen family or friends eat it

Im a Belgian but I’ve actually never seen it. I wouldn’t eat it. But to say that it is a cultural thing in this episode is far fetched don’t you think? I don’t think a lot of people eat horse meat. So he might be wrong with the delicacy part. Because its not common to eat it.

Hi, a german here. I've never seen horsemeat for human consumption, but it's pretty common in pet food. In germany some people breed and raise horses just for them to beeing slaughterd. This way they don't get fed those drugs. Also sometimes old or unwanted hobby-horses get sold to butchers. But only, if they didn't get any of the harmful drugs.
I am also German, and you can buy horse meat in Germany for human consumption. I guess most often it's processed as sausages. It's true though that it's not something you can buy everywhere or in a general supermarket, you really have to look for it.

I always thought that phrase made sense. Back when cities were protected by walls, attacking armies would often prevent supplies from entering, thus starving the citizens within. After the “food” animals were eaten, “work” animals such as horses were eaten.
as someone who's lived their whole life in Poland (bottom left 2:28) we do not eat horses, i've never eaten a horse or seen a menu with horses on it (get your facts straight matpat), but miraculously we do have a near identical version of the saying that goes "i could eat a horse with it's hooves" so there's that...
tbh this probably became such a popular idea since some people got lost whilst travelling in the olden days and probably had to resort to eating their ride to survive, i bet in the star wars universe there's a saying that goes "i'm so cold i could cut a whole inside a jawa and crawl inside"
