    The Jeep Wrangler is synonyms with the offroad. Since 1987, the Wrangler has been a staple for those backwoods, trail happy, off roaders and for good reason. The foundation of the wrangler is built on the CJ, the vehicle built by America to deliver some whoopins to the Germans in WWII. And out of the 4 generations of Wranglers, we’re going to focus on the PEAK wrangler, and that’s the TJ. Today we are going to break what makes the TJ so good, starting with it’s Quadra Coil 4-link suspension setup and then we’ll look at the beefy boy Dana axles that keep this wrangly boy rippin’ up those dusty trails.
    Some of our best videos ever are coming out soon, stay tuned so you won't miss a thing!

      Yes! When IFS flexes, the vehicle moves downward on that side to meet it, reducing clearance.

    • @mwalker9401
      @mwalker9401 Před 3 lety +2

      No. There is zero sacrifice in ride quality if you understand suspension geometry, shackle length and angle, spring rate, spring and spring pack shape and design. Coils do not ride better than leaves because they are coils. The spring rate is the spring rate, a stiffer spring will have a stiffer ride, coil or leaf is irrelevant.

      This also has nothing to do with the video that is about solid axle Jeeps. Coils do not offer better ride, they do not offer better articulation, nor do they offer better travel. Those variables are controlled by the spring design (number of elements, material, thickness, taper, end element design...) not the spring type. This commonly believed myth is right up there with inflating your tires to the pressure listed on the sidewall.

    Great video. I just wanted to add a few things. The reason for bump steer is when the axle moves in a different arc when compared to the drag link. The way that Jeep engineered it out, was by making the panhard bar the same length, and mounting it parallel to the drag link. This ensures that the axle always moves on the same arc as the steering.

I started working at JTE (Jeep Truck Engineering) in early 89 as a chassis designer on the Viper which was developed in the same building. Very cool seeing the conception of the TJ and ZJ in the mock up area. Even the WJ introduced in 99 had it roots in AMC, the 4.7 was also conceived by AMC. The mighty V10 has AMC roots in it also, the front mounted gerotor oil pump was a concept used by AMC on it's V8 engines.

      What's meant is Jeep was still using AMC designed/spec'ed parts; like engines, axles, brakes, wheels etc. Parts that came into use by Chrysler when they bought out AMC. It does't mean the parts were all built in the early 80s when AMC still ran Jeep.

However, the issues you talk about with leafs are pretty easy to fix with components such as upgraded shackles, anti wrap bars, and numerous companies that develop leafs with excellent articulation and spring rates for whatever application you may need. Fuckin hell do I miss my Jeep. It was an ‘09 JK and was an insurance write-off from a moose accident here in Newfoundland (Canada). I was 11 when we got it and was the first big project me and my father worked on together; restorin the damn thing and all. By the time I was 17 and had gotten my novice license. He handed me the keys to it and let me rip. I’d spend hours and days just out muddin in it and occasionally gettin stuck, but to be honest, that’s the best part. One time we had 4 jeeps stuck a couple clicks from the nearest dirt road. It was mid February and was a nice and icy -18 degrees Celsius out. We were out until 3am in this frozen bog with nothin but axes, tree bows and paracord, as our winches were damn well shagged. But the point is that was the fun in owning a Jeep; gettin into all sorts of stupid situations and seein how one can cleverly get out. Anyways it wasn’t long after I graduated and went to university where I had to retire the beauty and go for a Jetta TDI as I was driving over 75km a day back and forth for my education and work. Still miss that beast though. If you have a wrangler, cherish it, take care of it, and for God’s sake take it off roaring from time to time. Their original purpose was for war after all.

    thank you for teaching me about the different kinds of suspension. i’m 20yrs old and bought a 65 mustang. it has leaf spring suspension and bounces to much over railroad tracks and por holes. now i know what kind of coils to get and the benefits of doing so!!!

      @BigMateo24 Před 3 lety +1

      Just get a set of slapper bars. They will help prevent axle wrap and are way easier to install then cutting off leaf spring brackets and welding on coil perches. Unless your going to back half the entire rear of the car and put an adjustable 4-link in it. Pretty 90's pro street but really effective on the drag strip.

      BigMateo24 will those really help? bc currently i have the issue of the back rear right side hanging a tad bit lower than the left, which results in my tire rubbing against the wheel well. my friend is currently fixing my engine and told me about this problem. i’m hoping it’s nothing serious like warping of the leaf spring or (please god no) the axel. so like, do you think the slapping bars will help? i’m also kinda broke bc of school and the car as is, so i need to know what to save for in the future so i don’t screw myself over.
