  • Disaster strikes as our buddy boat flips their dinghy in big surf at Ollie's point in Costa Rica. It has a center console, and a 30Hp 4-stroke outboard, so flipping it and getting the motor going again is no easy task... Plus later that evening we go to a party at a mansion in Flamingo bay with some new friends!
    If you would like to go skiing in Japan contact Simon and Gigi at Kodama lodge!! simon@kodamalodge.com
    SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are almost ready to cross the Pacific Ocean!!

    Hey I know your an engineer but here in the states I am a lead automotive tech and I also work on heavy diesel trucks but for the large cable lugs we no longer crimp them or even punch them. We use either the same or heavier lugs this works with copper or the heavier aluminum pigs but we get these solder pellets and put a few into the lug the heat it with a pocket torch then push the cable in so it’s completely soldered together and this just makes a such a better connection. Just crimping you never know if you have a really good connection. Just because if you pull on it and it doesn’t move does not necessarily mean you have a great connection. These solder pellet slugs are flux core and extremely easy to use. Well ours are flux core I don’t know if all the ones made are. But I thought this info may help you out you can order some online and improve your main wiring for some insurance from future problems. Hope this helps oh yeah we use the heavier battery cable lugs rather then the copper. They seam to handle the power better and are more reliable. Love the channel brother.

    • @MD-sj2dn
      @MD-sj2dn Před rokem +2

      Solder should never be used alone for a connection like this. It can become brittle and increase resistance with stress or completely fail under high temperatures, such as under high current. You still need a primary physical connection such as a crimp or screw/bolt lug. Also please know copper is a significantly better conductor and has higher tensile strength than aluminum. It’s just heavier and more expensive than aluminum.

    Hi Colin the best thing to do with a fault like this is before you fix it, with your loads on check for voltage drop across the connections.. i.e cable lug to cable lug, cable lug to switch terminal bolt..etc etc until you find the voltage drop.. Most likely is that the switch terminal bolt had worked it's way loose and was resistive causing it to heat up.. Switch failure is also a possibility for a few reasons.. heat, moisture, corrosion, excessive current... etc... Or running devices at a low battery voltage.. Remember current is inversely proportional to voltage in that scenario, meaning if voltage goes down current goes up.. Not convinced this could happen with lithium batteries, but test some voltages while things are running for peace of mind.. Best Regards.

We spent one entire winter cruising through the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. I love seeing your adventures and it makes me want to buy another boat. The very worst day of sailing is still far better than the best day of working. Fair winds, my friend.

    You need a fuse between the switch and the battery so the fuse can blow and have a spare fuse tied next to it. Use class T fuse at leat 400 Amp fuse. Also buy the big Grey 600 Amp switches those small switches are marginal for the size of your system.

      Measure the voltage drop across the switch while you have it under load. It should be extremely low. You can calculate the resistance using ohms law.
      You can also do this with the cables to make sure the crimp connectors have not gone high resistance.

    I've seen some crazy freak waves like that. I was at a beach called Moon Stone, an epic beach, fairly flat and 300 feet from surf to the end of the beautiful sand. A wave came and rushed across the entire 300 feet of dry sand, and slammed into a rock wall at the end . All I could think of was part of a Tsunami wave ! The quite typically are multiple waves though like the ones you experienced, but they travel faster and more aggressively !
