  • The Last Emperor is a 1987 biopic about the life of Puyi, the last Emperor of China, whose autobiography was the basis for the screenplay written by Mark Peploe and Bernardo Bertolucci. Independently produced by Jeremy Thomas, it was directed by Bertolucci and released in 1987 by Columbia Pictures. Puyi's life is depicted from his ascent to the throne as a small boy to his imprisonment and political rehabilitation by the Chinese Communist authorities.
The film stars John Lone as Pu Yi, with Joan Chen, Peter O'Toole, Ruocheng Ying, Victor Wong, Dennis Dun, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Maggie Han, Ric Young, Vivian Wu, and Chen Kaige. It was the first feature film for which the producers were authorized by the Chinese government to film in the Forbidden City in Beijing.[1] It won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. You can tell the two characters in the car was very restrained. Not much facial expressions but lots of emotional turmoil inside. You can just hear puyi's trembling voice on farewell mr johnston. Then the film tried to complete the sense of loss and sadness with two waves, one with Auld Lang Syne and the second with the associate shouting goodbye, we'll never forget you. To puyi, Mr. Johnston is the gateway to a bigger world, the real world that he never has a chance to experience. Now he is losing his mentor, one of the few persons that cares about him. For Mr. Johnson, although his role was completely politically driven at first, during his engagement, he did develop empathy for Puyi. Brilliant acting and staging.
One detail you noticed is Johnston takes a deep breath and the word "AS" was released at the top of his breath. It means he needs a lot of "support" to utter those words in this emotional situation. Great acting by Peter O'Toole. what a master! if he didn't take that breath it wouldn't have been convincing.
and that handshake and how puyi started to crack and johnston nearly lost it. that's where it made me cry even harder. I cried since Johnston said As we said hello. The two men tried to normalise it with a forced smile.

Johnson was the closest thing Puyi had to a father in this. Whatever Puyi does later on, you do have to feel empathy for what he went through, losing all he had in such a short time.

Henry Pu Yi became a close friend with Reginald Johnson for the rest of his life. Its very extremely sad for Henry Pu Yi to become the last emperor of China at the wrong time. When the Japanese army took over China and Manchuria he became a puppet emperor for the Japanese. He was the emperor of Manchukuo until he was arrested by Soviet paratroopers in 1945. Henry Pu Yi died in 1967 as a gardener.

Auld Lang Syne is a Scottish song about cherishing the past and looking forward to the future. An interesting historical fact: when the Protestant Reformation of the 1500s had reached Scotland in 1560 and the Scots rejected the Catholic Church in favor of Presbyterianism, they decided that Christmas was a "Catholic holiday" and banned the celebration of Christmas for nearly 400 years. Because of this, the western New Years celebration, which takes place one week after Christmas, became a much more important holiday in Scotland than anywhere else in Europe. The Scottish established a tradition of singing Auld Lang Syne on New Years Eve and as they emigrated to other countries like the United States of America and Australia, the Scottish brought their tradition with them. That is why it is customary to sing Auld Lang Syne on New Years Eve throughout the English speaking world, including America.
