  • The Last Emperor is a 1987 biopic about the life of Puyi, the last Emperor of China, whose autobiography was the basis for the screenplay written by Mark Peploe and Bernardo Bertolucci. Independently produced by Jeremy Thomas, it was directed by Bertolucci and released in 1987 by Columbia Pictures. Puyi's life is depicted from his ascent to the throne as a small boy to his imprisonment and political rehabilitation by the Chinese Communist authorities.
The film stars John Lone as Pu Yi, with Joan Chen, Peter O'Toole, Ruocheng Ying, Victor Wong, Dennis Dun, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Maggie Han, Ric Young, Vivian Wu, and Chen Kaige. It was the first feature film for which the producers were authorized by the Chinese government to film in the Forbidden City in Beijing.[1] It won nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Wenxiu was actually the smartest out of the three. She saw where shit was headed, and bailed! After divorcing Pu Yi, she lost her imperial title and became a commoner, but remarried. She became a teacher and shortly after got leukemia and died in her 40's. Her husband was at her side when she passed away. She was still the luckiest. Wanrong became a drug addict, addicted to Opium and eventually went insane in prison and died from starvation...her burial site remains a mystery. Pu Yi became a prisoner, hated or forgotten by most of the Chinese people and ultimately forced to become a gardener. At least Wenxiu found true happiness, unlike the other two.

Thank you for the added history! I remember being fascinated by this movie. Speaking of Wanrong's opium addiction; searching for Joan Chen eating rose petals, a sumptuous and amazing image still burned into my brain, is what brought me here in the 1st place. =)

Wenxiu is potrayed by Vivian Wu. She is also the Empress Dowager in Ruyi.
As for Wangrong, she is potrayed by Joan Cheng, who plays Ruyi's Aunt in the same drama.
These actresses play as rivals in drama and film but it seems that they have a good working relationship.

I never understood this scene as a child but I didn’t understand aspects of it. It’s funny what we view as freedom given what we think we don’t have or do have. If you’re ever in position of true love never let it go no matter the situation. If it’s not love then you have the right to leave, but never leave cause of another woman! Because you will rarely ever find a man who loves you especially if you’re were capable of Truly loving a man verse using a man.

      From her wiki page:
Wenxiu married Major Liu Zhendong in 1947 at the well-known Dongxing Pavilion (东兴楼) in Beiping (present day Beijing). Liu later ran a car rental business, which soon went into bankruptcy. Later their landlord fled following the surrender of Beiping in 1948 (which was renamed "Beijing" in 1949 at the end the Chinese Civil War). After the war, Liu confessed to the government regarding their historical issue and found a job in a cleaning services company. They lived in poverty in a 10 square-meter house.
Wenxiu died with only her husband by her side in their house at 10 p.m. on September 17, 1953. Later, with the help of her husband and his group of cleaning service colleagues, she was buried outside the Andingmen.
In 2004, the descendants of the imperial house of the Qing Dynasty granted posthumous titles to Puyi, his two spouses and two consorts. However, Wenxiu did not receive a posthumous title because she is considered to have been reduced to the status of a commoner after she divorced Puyi.

She became a teacher for a few years, but ended up leaving because many curious people gathered around the school. She remarried a Kuomintang officer called Liu Zhendong who owned a car dealership business, but the business subsequently collapsed. After the war Liu confessed to the new CCP government about their historical issue. Both lived in poverty and worked as cleaners. At least she passed on with her husband by her side and her colleagues helped to lay her to rest.
Really sad that things had to end up this way for her but I hope she was somewhat happier with her new life.
