  • Many epics crumble under the weight of their own plus-sized intentions but thanks to the virtuoso skill of director Bernardo Bertolucci and cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, 1987's The Last Emperor, the remarkable story of Pu Yi who reigned over the Forbidden City and fell from grace, becomes a soulful epic with the sensuous pageantry of a grand opera. David Byrne's delicately rhythmic score is a hipster's mix of new wave percussion and traditional Chinese melody.

The people at Pu Yi's "inauguration" outside the grand throne were not eunuchs.. they were supposed to be the officials from all over the empire that traveled to Peking to witness this moment. So it MUCH more significant than what you've described.

The Japanese composer played the a role of Manchukuo cinema director...I think he therefore had a deep involvement of the movie and the music carries so much emotion. Puyi, even as the last emperor of Qing and the first and only emperor of Manchukuo, never had real power. Some say Manchukuo was a puppet state, but to Puyi, he was just utilizing the Japaneses to be an emperor again. Puyi (an ethnic Manchu) himself may have considered himself Chinese, but to the Chinese who forced him outside of Forbidden city, he was just an invading alien.

John Lone for the most part just disappeared shortly after that movie. A fine actor. John is right, Joan Chen was gorgeous in this film.

An amazing film that is sadly underrated. The costumes are wonderful, especially going through the time of China's history. It is really worth watching.

I think you mean underrated. The critics actually praised the film when it came out. It just wasn't shown much.

Thank you for fixing my mistake. It is underrated and one of the best epic films of the 1980s.

lots of wrong information there. there are still a huge imperial robes collection in Taipei gu gong museum. Also, there's some left in the Beijing gu gong, which is the forbidden city itself. the people who are bowing when the emperor walks out of the building are not Fucking eunuchs, they are all nobles and some high rank government officials....

+richard murphy I might add, especially taking into account this was done after the financial disasters that were "Heaven's Gate" and "One from the Heart".

richard murphy Well, like 1900 (another Bertolucci film, oddly enough), is it very long, visually spectacular and an absolute masterpiece. However, both movies were financial disasters, more so for Heaven's Gate...

It is almost criminal that this film is shown on small tvs or even big screen tvs. It was meant for the big screen.

It's also baffling why this hasn't been given a 4K Blu Ray release in the UK.
