Interesting thoughts. I really liked The Last Emperor and empathized with Puyi and the prison he was always in.

That is really I ironic because the longer version may be better. The theatrical version of. Once Upon a Time In America was also bad you need to watch the 4 hour version to get why it is a masterpiece. But you won’t give The Last Emperor the sane chance! If you have not watched the Director’s cut than you really don’t know what you are talking about.

I found your review so wrong. It is one of the best Oscar winners and deserved of all.
I felt it lost some when leaving the Forbidden City but that's when i felt such empathy towards Pu Yi due to his ignorance of enemies closing in around him.
Only two agreements, score and look, gorgeous and the language thing. Would have been great to have been in Chinese, but probably not Best Picture then, not yet ready for that.

I just couldn't get into it, but I'm glad you enjoyed it at least:)

My personal opinion is that the director's cut is better, most of the scenes there are more connected with each other then the theatrical cut. The theatrical cut was edited so badly, just to make the movie around 2 hour and 47 minutes.

Was pretty much a ho-hum year. Not even the movies you listed as "should have been nominated" did little for me (and no, I am not a Kubrick fan). "Princess Bride" has become a cult classic (meaning it was appreciated only after it failed to initially impress), and "Empire of the Sun" while good, is one of Spielberg's lesser-known films. Didn't impress then and has grown to little more than a "kind of impressive" after all (with a young Chrisian Bale - and wasn't he great in the "Dark Night" trilogy!) kind 'of film.
For me, the next two winners as well were kind of "ho-hum" Best Pictures compared to the competition.

Ah, 1988. Rain Man IS a good movie, sure. But 1988 was the year of Akira, Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbour Totoro. So I'm a little biased toward anime there. :P
It was also the year of Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Land Before Time. So if we have to limit ourselves to American productions, I would've gone with Roger Rabbit.

I rate the review as it does the movie. There is no explanation why personal connection with the audience (hard to accomplish in multicultural settings) and non-choppy transitions are Oscar criteria.

I didn't say these things are Oscar criteria. I said that these things being missing is what made me personally not like it.

@@IaMD.B. Without the premises that I stated your arguments would not work. You imply them.

I think you can argue that puyi’s whole life is also muted. He was never having his own choices about life

Good review and although I quite like this movie its always interesting to get an opposing take. I saw this twice many years apart. The younger me enjoyed the look it but its content largely went over my head. The older me saw many nuances and appreciated their meaning. Your comment about watching it as if through a window though I think is the intended effect. Isolation is a strong motif. And for me this movie is probably more relevant in our isolated internet age then it was in the 80s.

All of the problems with the pacing and editing of the last Emperor’s theatrical version are true of the fiasco version of once upon a Time in America. But you act like it is unforgivable that the theatrical version of the last Emperor feels choppy. Why don’t you have that same criticism for the theatrical version I want to time in America.?

I wanted to like this movie, as I am a history teacher, but honestly it was a bit boring. Still, it was worth watching for the scenes in the Forbidden City.
