    I just moved to a colder climate than I’ve ever lived in before and I’ve had to buy new staple items all at once. So I’ve had an interesting opportunity to put this idea in to practice. I got a coat with a long vertical line to accommodate my FN and a muted blue-green fleece to complement my soft summer color palette. Thanks for continuing to encourage us to look at our everyday pieces!

    This is such a pivotal concept for style!! I call it dressing for your *real* lifestyle, not the pics. I need to think through my lifestyle pieces a little bit more since I work from home now. Thanks for the push! ❤

      I also love that concept. I came across it somewhere, that you should dress for the life you actually have rather than some fantasy life. I have a fantasy life where I go out to fancy things all the time but that’s not my real life! So that concept changed my whole wardrobe and what I buy.

    I like the message of your video. This past summer I switched my sweatpants for linen pants. I looked so put together and felt confident in them while staying just as comfortable!
    My other favorite practical item are my real US military camouflage pants. The bagginess is good for movement when hiking or climbing, the rigid fabric protects you from scratches, and the pockets are perfect for carrying tools. Plus I feel like such a badass compared to when I wear leggings when I’m outdoors.

    Brilliant idea. Also, I think those “perfect for you” items tend to look better in your wardrobe for longer (transcending the trends) bc they look more cohesive with you. So even when they aren’t exactly “trendy” anymore, they still look more stylish on you.

    As a Canadian, who also has to consider challenging climate considerations (aka wet, cold, and/or snow most of the year) and who needs hard working, practical basics, I loved this. It really can be quite a challenge to hone in on what works for both your style, what flatters you, what is comfortable, and what will stand up to the elements. I feel like I am chronically chasing the Ultimate Coat lol.

    This is one of my favorites of your videos! As a stay-at-home mom, my practical comfortable clothes are my most worn clothes and I rarely have a chance to wear "something nice" due to living in the toddler years. I have started to switch out my most worn pieces to thrifted items in my colors and in my body type. It makes me feel so much more put together even on days I don't leave the house!

  • @brittanyloo4315
    @brittanyloo4315 Před 3 měsíci +7

    This is so practical and simple but not how we usually think about things! I remember a few years ago saying to a friend I just can’t justify spending that on a t shirt and she goes: eel that’s where I spend my clothes money since I’ll wear it all the time. Made a lot of sense then but I need to do better at applying it. It’s funny how we just get into purchasing habits. I live where there are very long and cold winters - my mom was all about having a nice dressy coat, she said the winters were too long not to have something nice looking, which makes a lot of sense in a way and made a lot of sense when I dressed in suits for my job every day but now as a mom of 5 a dressy winter coat just doesn’t make sense and yet I’ve continued to buy them and then feel so silly when in my joggers and runners taking my kids to run errands with my dressy coat over top 😂 definitely need something more practical for where I’m at today and these are great tips for helping me find something practical and flattering. 😊

  • @poxidog
    @poxidog Před 4 měsíci +20

    I started to do this without realising it. A few years ago I really saved and splurged on my dog walking boots. Now let's be clear: these had to be suitable for all weather, all year round, fit my calfs and feet right, work for hiking, going round the Loch, farm and if I happened to be running out to the vets or dog training in them not totally embarrassing. They also had to last because I am hard on my shoes lol the ones I got were easily 3x as expensive as I'd previously bought but they were bought pre covid and still going. Shockingly I never used that same logic on my coat lol I've currently got a very serviceable 20 quid wax jacket which... its serviceable. My jacket check list is even longer though, if I find something perfect I'll probably have to go get it

    I live in Iowa, where the winters are cold and long, and I had to invest in good winter wear to survive here (lol). While my snow boots are second hand they were very gently used and a good company. I found a warm, packable (for traveling) light bluey-purple coat at Nordstrom and I splurged because it fit all of my wants, including being a great true winter color! I wear a pastel purple Carhartt beanie with it and get so many compliments!

  • @SatipatthanaSakuraDragona
    @SatipatthanaSakuraDragona Před 4 měsíci +4

    This came at the perfect time. I've been irritated that I can't find the perfect long winter coat to invest in that will replace my old one (that I realized doesn't suit my body type or color season and is way too big). But I live in Texas, and we only dip below freezing a handful of days a year. The more casual and less heavy coat that I wear far more often (and which also needs to be replaced for the exact same reasons) is the one I should be replacing and investing in FIRST. I just wore that sucker twice last week and hated every minute of it. I mean, I am very yang. I rock highly structured and tailored items like blazers and coats. What was I doing? 🤷‍♀

    I'm so happy you brought up about Princess Catherine's style because she's been my role model! I probably can't achieve the quality of her clothing due to economy but I wish I could be as put together as she is. I'd definitely complete my wardrobe this year, starting with hyperpractical basics.
    Thank you for your insights always!

    I live in a snowy climate and commute by bus and subway. The one winter coat capsule wardrobe notion would never work for me. I’m on the cusp of dark and true winter. Dark jewel tone coats in green or purple have been my mainstay for a long time. Also, people keep wanting to buy these cute boots, which are fine for country walks or getting from the car to indoors, but won’t cut in the city where you have to deal with snow plow leave behinds. I discovered snow sneakers, which are basically running shoes with thick soles and heavy insulation. Are they “cute”? No, but I grabbed a pair in burgundy and I can handle a crunchy, icy street just fine. I keep a pair of generic black shoes at work for times I don’t want to carry shoes for the day.

    agree with the strategic investing, especially for practical items. I wish this video was made 5yrs ago when I started buying winter gear (I moved to the northern hemisphere from a tropical country). My most-worn coats today are from 4-5 yrs ago, I’m always grateful to have found them!

    I live in a very cold climate, most time of the year it’s dark and gloomy. One of my best investments has been an oversized baby pink winter coat. It cost a fortune but I am wearing it every single day for like half a year and it has been giving me joy ever since. Every time I am so excited to put it on that I even started going outside more!

    I did find some cute gray and purple winter boots. They coincidentally go with my tool kit. 😂 Soft summer is workable with taupe, gray etc. practical outdoorsy items. It's kinda more fun if you're into girly stuff and the earth element vs the one time dress or fantasy outfits. Been there done that with the money wasting.

    This is all so fabulous. I really enjoy your work & how you tend to think outside the box. After being assessed by you, I have begun going through this process & it is transforming how I think of my clothes & style. ❤even colored my hair my more natural color & started wearing the few pieces I have that really work for me. I tend towards Sun a lot & the focus on practicality may help create the order I need.

    Thanks for this video! I used to work in an office and it was easy to be fashionable and feminine. Now I am a dog trainer which I love but I do miss wearing nice clothes. However I HATE being cold and in the summer I need to protect myself from both jumping dogs’ nails and the sun. So it’s been a challenge to look nice and meet those practical requirements but this gives me some ideas

    Love, love, love this advice. I’d love to see some demonstrations of this concept for less common color/style root/aesthetic combinations. I feel like example wardrobes tend to demonstrate the obvious style pairings (Soft Classics with Autumn coloring in classic British countryside style, Flamboyant naturals with warm spring coloring going full Lily Pulitzer preppy.) But it’s so hard to visualize something like a warm spring doing a punk aesthetic with classic lines, and I’d love to see a pro tackle some of those less obvious combos.

    I’d be very interested to hear how this can be accomplished while wearing uniforms. I’m going to school to be an EMT and we have uniforms, as well as when we eventually work the job. I know you can’t always look great, but I’d still like to look decent and put together.
    My only guess is through tailoring the clothes. We’ll be wearing polos tucked in, hair put up, no large jewelry, black or blue work pants, and black boots.
    It’s a very structured look, but I myself am a soft natural (I believe).

    Over the last few years, I have seen companies come out with more stylish practical items. I think you just have to do your research and be patient in finding that perfect item for you.
    I do have to say though that snow boots and winter coats (like puffer coats) will always just be overwhelming on most figures- just due to the nature of the materials and shape. I always say- I would rather be warm and dry than miserable and cold.
    Layering is also really important in all seasons and once you learn to do that- you can wear those more fancy coats because you have learned how to layer underneath.

    I’m very outdoorsy & active but, like to be stylish. Swimming & Yoga is Grey Camo Dry Robe worn with swimsuits, leggings & t-shirts in grey/black/reds & sparkly grey Carvela trainers. My horse riding gear doubles up for dog walking. I wear Musto, Dubarry & Barbour with Dubarry or Hunter boots. Traditional jodhpurs made from cotton & Lycra are warm in winter & cool in the summer with plenty of stretch & classic styling. My casual wear out & about tends to be Joules, M&S, Boden, White Stuff, Fat Face & Geox. Changed jobs & I’ve colour Co-ordinated my jacket & coat with the uniform plus altered the uniform to fit me better & have a smarter appearance. I think it is important to have items that you are comfortable wearing & also co-ordinated to give a stylish & smart impression.

    As an FN, I was intrigued by the "open neckline" idea -- perhaps it's a personal preference, but I LOVE turtlenecks and smaller necklines, because I feel it accentuates my shoulder width (perhaps different than accommodating it? Perhaps less focused on balance and more focused on boldness?)
    I do love every other bit of advice! I love wide pants

  • @thesensationaladventuresof1150

    I love basics! The practical under garments and layers help me build my outfits.
    I need layered outfits because I have a condition called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. It makes me probably one of the only people in the U.K. who has a fan on all year around.
    So when I stand up or sit from laying and resting my heart rate spikes to tachycardic, and stays there long after the activity is over. 137 just brushing my teeth? Great thanks! 🙄 this condition is a co-occurring condition to Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, which makes my joints looser than they should be, giving me poor proscription.
    I have literally fallen over bucket sleeves. I need things like cuffed joggers, hareem triusers, leggings, things with closed ankles. That way I can’t trip on the ends, and it also keeps the the warmth in.
    I don’t like fleece, so this works for me.
    I’m still working through my kibby body type quiz loo

    had to laugh - one of my hyperpractical items for summer is actually a dress... wrap dress, with a pocket, in my colors, for my body type. I am super comfy in it, and it takes me from work to dinner, even wore it to a hot summer day wedding...
    for winter its most likely a black swing dress that I can layer under, over, wear with tights, leggings, sometimes even over pants. ofc with pockets. and my long wool coat.

    Most people hate denim shorts in the summer? I think that’s ridiculous. They’re a staple where I live and people love them. They’re comfortable, flattering, and versatile. Much better than some of the ugly maxi skirts I sometimes see which are unflattering, uncomfortable because of the heat, and not practical at all.

    Wait, what? I was sure kate m was a dramatic! Also that jacket looks too warm for a summer shade. Head spin!

      hello! kate's a soft summer. i'm one too and we tend to lean slightly neutral, so we can get away with some sliiiightly warm soft autumn shades like that green. i have a jacket in a similar colour, and though it's a little faded it works well on me too. it might be helped that kate's hair looks a little warmer than usual in that photo too, so there's likely some synergy going on there :)
