- Classic or dressing i.e. neutral (apparently) has been touted as the only way to look expensive, chic or stylish over the past few years. Whilst the old money, preppy and coastal grandmother styles do indeed all look expensive and do have neutral elements, it is not true that anything outside of this realm is tacky or cheap. This is my advice for true timeless dressing.

Thank you! I’m gonna fill this in…I love Christina Hendricks and I am an SD but my fave styles on her in 🎥 & 📺 are period pieces (Bucaneers/Mad Men) and def not wearable out! Lol 😝 Her personal style on her insta is more wearable but I think I need more confidence! She rocks some great tweeds, dramatic scarves and berets.
I'm going to add to all of this that this simple, solid prints, in neutral colours, is a very "white" old money thing too. As a South-Asian (and I think this also goes for East Asian, South American, African cultures), loud prints and medley of colors and lots of details is a huuuge part of our fashion, our interior design, and more. For both poor and wealthy people. Unfortunately, having been brainwashed into this neutral/minimal trend, so many of us POC girlies now find our own ethnic fashion too "gaudy". Wish these things became trendy too!

having dabbled in fashion history a bit, I'd add that pretty recent old money thing even in 'white' context. Just a few centuries ago, European nobility gilded all their lilies.

I think all national fashion will represent the environment. The closer to the equator, the brighter or more exotic it becomes.

As a romantic I cannot stress this enough. Those kind of clothes are not something I look really good in(although I have classic essence and can pull off some stuff). Classic is individual

I am a romantic, with classic and romantic essence. To be honest, I really like the classic style and I despise everything that is recommended for romantics. I really don’t think that a romantic can not wear a classic style, you just have to pick the correct lines for your body.
@@katch2511 You can, it's just much more difficult since classic lines usually don't honor our body shape(at least where I am,I struggle a lot with that everything is so boxy and shapeless). My essences are reversed,I have strong romantic essence and smaller precentage of classic, so for me, pulling off classic pieces is doable, but I can't just wear classic pieces. As I said, classic is individual for each and every one of us

@@LeaveBritneyalone580 you are a lucky that your body type and your essence match. It is not always easy finding the correct lines, and sometimes you even have to have things tailored. Whenever I dress in clothes recommended for romantics, I always feel too sexy and that everyone is looking at me. That is never the vibe I am going for and I simply don’t feel comfortable.
Using the analogy of the strict parent and rebellious child is such a great way to look at the fashion trend!
As a Bright Winter my Sun root is basically a given and they make me TIRED when everyone is wearing and promoting neutrals, especially beige and brown and cream and flesh tones as THEE way to look elegant when they mostly just look BORING! The British royal family are the literal pinnacle of elegant, wealthy, OLDDDD money aesthetic and they actually wear a lot of colour! Omg same! Though I still haven’t figured out my color season, I’ve always known that I look great in bright colors and I look sick in muted colors, especially neutrals. I need to wear either a bright white or a “bright” black (wasn’t sure how else to describe the type of black I meant.) If I wear pastels, it has to be a bright bubblegum pastel. Especially in my makeup, neutrals are all wrong. I might get away with a brown shirt, but tan or brown eyeshadow will make me look sick. If I want a neutral eye look, I go for a pale pink.
And apart from that, I just don’t see how we can live in a world with such beautiful colors and choose greige.

@@seabreeze4559 Definitely not Italian, they are all about colour, patterns, life! It's the "French" look if anything but that is more stereotypically black as a neutral rather than monochromatic beige. I think it's much more of a modern American/influencer IDEA of timelessness that's not actually rooted in fashion history.
Loved the points you've made here! I see so many "capsule wardrobes" that are only comprised of neutrals and I've just been left feeling like, "Where's the fun? Where do I incorporate my color season?" I love a good simple/neutral look, but there has to be some spice to make it your own and reflect your personality!

I think another good example of dressing "classic" while still being colorful is Kate Middleton- her clothes are always described as "classic" and "timeless" but she never shies away from color, she just keeps it simple with one or two colors per outfit and she doesn't wear much pattern. I know some of this probably has to do with rules about what she can and can't wear as a senior royal, but she's still good inspiration.

I've seen a fashion influencer choosing a blazer for "running errands" 😄 I think other parts of the outfit were blue jeans and a top with thin straps.
Totally agree with you. 90% of fashion youtubers have exactly the same style. Beige/gray, black and white stripes, tailor pants and sneakers... everyone starts too look the same...

Ellie-Jean this video was perfect omg im in love. ive been doing what you stated trying to look into my chilhood, my interests, and my lifestyle to see how those things affect the way i self express and its been so helpful. I read a *lot* of princess books growing up, watched and read a lot of fairy movies and books and i see how that comes into my style and even interior decor. Also i loved hearing you speak about manifestation and the power of clothing / glamour magic !

I loved this video and completely agree with it. I love looking classic and timeless but I also enjoy having a colourful wardrobe. It can be really easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you can only look classic in the beige aesthetic.

I would say that tasteful elegant style that is not generic usually is curated minimalist or eclectic minimalism. So the uniqueness of your style is infused into your choices without being overwhelming. The next level up from that is an exquisite flow of items where all the items have been chosen with a french eye to detail so that everything tends to melt together effortlessly while also having detail/nuance.
As a curvy romantic/theatrical romantic I always find modern styles to be so lack luster on myself. I honesty love the sleek, boxy boyish charm of many pieces, but they just do me no favors. It's really difficult to find casual and not so "fancy" items that seem current.
As a romantic this is also my biggest struggle
Key word "boxy." As in, "My curvy body looks like a box in this boxy Chanel-style jacket."

Love this video! I've tried to stick to only neutrals in the past but found myself getting bored. Flower is definitely my most prominent style root so I gravitate towards pinks and playful patterns naturally. I've found that fabric quality and flattering silhouettes make outfits more "classic" than color choices. If a natural outfit is entirely polyester and doesn't drape correctly then the neutral color definitely won't be it's saving grace.

Your videos have helped me so much! Just wanted to offer some tips tho.. Could you make the text thicker? Sometimes it's difficult to read with the thin lines. Also I feel like you were talking pretty fast in this video. I think a little bit slower pace would make it easier for viewers to process all your good info. Keep it up!!

Also, I saw a video on that said all this "old money" "Classy" outfits often portray certain ethnicities as "Old Money and Classy" and does not celebrate diversity

The dream self thing is such good advice! When certain outfit ideas or themes come up in your fantasy version of yourself you should realize that's something you can wear today.
Thank you so much for this video! As a soft dramatic, it can be tempting to have the exact same silhouette and cut in everything I buy. You can easily start buying things that all look the same, if you aren't careful.

This was a great video that you have a unique sense of personal style and how to look at it from a new angle. I've picked up on so many things in your videos (from bunge watching) this year and it has helped me out a great deal. Starting off with kibbe body type you helped me realise why certain items just feel icky in me and what I should be wearing being a tall angular soft dramatic. I also learned about the nuances of colour analysis. My mother was a colour analyst in the 80s and Ive known all my life that Im an autumn, but learned from you that I'm a dark autumn and another aha moment was learning that. Oh I can actually wear these dark contrasting colours even though my mother says i cant, because the old style ca didnt have the nuances. So she always told me not to wear certain dark colours because they were winter colours, however I always felt best and most stylish wearing the high contrasting dark and moody colours. And I really have to congratulate you on your own style system, its so much fun to combine the style roots and it makes sooo much sense. Much love from Sweden ❤

Hi Ellie-Jean, I found your Pinterest boards so helpful in really crystallizing my style roots. I took the quiz and thought i knew, but then I saw the pictures and changed my mind! I started as stone, mountain and mushroom but ended up with mushroom, Sun and Moon! I'm currently wearing black and red in an emo-meets-1950s situation that matches my dramatic classic body type and my 90s punk personality and I love it- i bought three of the things I'm wearing due to looking at those Pinterest boards so thank you!
To your point that classic or "timeless" looks in the same neutral color palette aren't for everyone--yes! Timeless for me means leaning more into draping, asymmetry, bold silhouettes, striking color combinations, unusual patterns. And don't start me on accessories, jewelry especially: I look like I've stolen an elderly relative's old things when I try to stick to prim little "must-have" items. A bit of extra heft does me good.

This is great! I love the traditional classic style on other people but it just doesn’t suit my personality and I feel like I’m playing dress up when I try. My roots are earth, sun, and flower and I love bright colors. I take my inspiration from my grandma and her friends who were quintessential southern belles who were always classy but never shied away from color. I think southerners do classic in a fun way. Sometimes it’s preppy and sometimes it’s more bohemian (which is my favorite look) I try and strike the balance but all I know is, life is too short to wear clothes that you don’t love!
I really like the concept of dopamine dressing! It's just I get dopamine hits from lots of dark fluttery layers lol
People are obsessed with neutral colors. I admit that neutrals are okay to be your time saver, but it’s become overexposed and totally boring to look at! I myself also have a bit mushroom root, but since my main root is sun I always add other colors other than neutrals so I’m not end up look dull.

As a dramatic classic, it is cool to know a taupe epauletted trench paired with black tailored pants and turtle neck topped of with a chunky gold watch and earrings just looks so right that it takes on a life of its own that is every bit as stunning as a flowing gown. Makes having to let go of lovely lace, ruffles, and rounded clingy lines more bearable.
Hi Ellie-Jean, I struggle with knowing if Sun is one of my style roots or not. I love vibrant, bold clothing, but then when I put it on I feel silly. Is this a style root that I’m not sure how to incorporate properly or is it that the colors I’m choosing don’t work with my color season? Can you speak to this in some way? Also, I’ve noticed you’ve been zooming in and out quite a bit in your stationary shots. You don’t need to do this to keep our attention. The amount of images and examples you give keep us engaged. Do you know your Kibbe ID? I'm a classic and I look overwhelmed in styles very easily. I love being a Classic, but I use to think of was limiting. It just takes much less of a "style" to be playful. Only try one or two items that read as "sun" in you're outfit instead of styling your WHOLE outfit as SUN.

I’m fairly certain I’m a Flamboyant Natural. I’m definitely vertical dominant, but I’ve struggled from there. But I’m also fairly certain I’m either a true summer or soft summer. So maybe those are conflicting??
@@stephaniebateman2637I'm also a soft summer, and clear, brilliant colors are not good on me, no matter how much makeup I wear to compensate. Maybe try a bold color that's also deep, like a rich emerald green or a dark amethyst. Or try choosing a rich shade that has a lot of grey in it (like a deep burgundy or a rich berry color) instead of a color that is very clear (like a fuchsia pink).
My wardrobe relies heavily on blue greens (imagine any sea-glass color) and various purples and berry colors, with navy in summer and cool brown in winter as my neutrals.
I just don’t fully vibe with that style, because I’m an outdoorsy person with a penchant for colour and occasionally eccentric pieces. I’d love to have a classic undercurrent, where I have ease choosing simple flattering pieces, but with some pops of wild !

Question about style roots - you seem to associate pattern and detail with flower (delicate, cute) but what about what I would think of as heavy or ornate detail? Damask fabrics, chunky cardigans with wood buttons, printed velvet, persian rugs, brogue-ing on shoes, usually in deep colours?
Depending on the context, some of this would be fire, some would be earth! So printed velvet and Persian rugs deffo has a fire element, but all of those options scream earth to me! ♥️
Is it possible for style roots to change with the seasons? For example I feel like I’m Stone, Flower and Sun in the spring and summer and Stone, Flower and Moon in the fall and winter
The trouble with the dream life inspiration is that too often it leads to a wardrobe that doesn't relate to your actual life. It may be inspirational, but not practical or useful.

As someone who likes elegant clothes but also edgy details like Dr Martens and micro bangs, it is very hard for me to find inspiration in celebrities. I also don't wear light or warm colors with an exception of white and that also mostly tops and shirts. 80% ofmy wardrobe is black and I have few red, burgundy or dark green items. Nothing that I see in media represent my style.

I don't think this is the video for me😅 i was hoping this might give me an In to dressing classic through concrete examples, but it's very vague and assumes you already know what dressing classic Means.

You have amazing content but please slow down the speed! If you have something worth saying, people will listen to you. It doesn’t have to be a speed talking TikTok video. The thing about listening comprehension is: people don’t comprehend what you are saying WHILE you say it, they comprehend it in the PAUSE (silence) after the sentence is complete! The faster you talk and the faster you edit from one sentence directly into the next sentence, the less people pay attention to you. It comes across as a rambling or a chattering. Fast talking comes across as being someone who is afraid to take up people’s time, it is perceived by others as insecurity, like you don’t feel you have the right to speak and be heard. I urge you to listen to some influencers like Matthew Hussey or Ed Mylett who have extreme impact on their listeners! They do not apologize for taking the time to speak. In fact people really listen to them because every word is carefully chosen and delivered with intention. And people hang on their every word. You have amazing content but you speak so fast that it just sounds sometimes like you are holding your breath and I find myself holding mine too. Please take time to pause and slow down and vary the pace of your speech so it doesn’t sound like the entire video is just one paragraph with zero punctuation. I fear TikTok has made influencers think that if a video isn’t short and fast nobody will listen, but the truth is that the gazillion of short speed videos just blend together and are forgotten. The people who know how to speak with intention and slow down actually connect with their audience and draw people in! And the impact of their words last long after the video is over. I love your content and the style roots helped me so much. I think you could reach a wider audience though, by improving the manner in which you deliver your message. You have a right to be heard! No need to rush, your message is valuable and people will take the time to listen. I look forward to your future videos!
I absolutely hate the romanticism of old money. They have all earned their money on the backs of innocent men and women being abused. They made money off of shit regulations in the system. At least the tech bros and new millionaires and billionaires have made their millions and billions typing away at the screen not actually harming anyone.
The "look expensive" video titles make me feel uneasy. Since when it is good and normal to intentionally try to look rich? Like these are tips for con artists who pretend to be millionaires to get some money from you.
