Queen Victoria wore only dark purple and other dark colours and heavy fabrics as a teenager. Black was reserved to only mourning people, so she wore other edgy dark colours when girls her age were supposed to wear light and happy colours and light fabrics! So she was a goth, in a way 😂

Janus Nightshade That’s primarily because Queen Victoria also spent a significant amount of her reign in mourning - most notably her husband. Her youthful tendency towards dark colours and then later usage of mourning colours did establish a tone of darker colours predominating in fashion through the Victorian period. It’s part of the reason for the notable contrast in the Edwardian period in which light flowing garments became increasingly common for day wear

as someone who is very involved in alternative culture and fashion this video felt very very surface level and inauthentic. I’d rather people just stick to their own lanes rather than trying to cover everything when they clearly don’t know what they’re talking about. Like imagine this girl trying doing an accurate, informed or credible read on the development of streetwear/rap fashion aesthetics. It would not work, so why does she feel emboldened to try and cover this? Im not trying to hate or anything, all fashion is a reflection of who we are and this isn’t who she is and that’s okay, but she should stick to what she knows

Dear Ellie-Jean, It is so refreshing to see a Kibbe body type analyses that don't take this system as a must, as an axiom, but as a basis for conforming and non-conforming style options and all in between (as you've shown in other episodes too, e.g. Pamela Anderson and more). For my long time experience with trying to conform to such a system (a season color palette), in between my teenage punk style and old age (hahaha) goth style, I may testify that those are never to be taken seriously and preferably taken with a pinch of salt. Develop your own personality and personal style, be original and most importantly, try to always feel "in your own skin" no matter what a certain system tells you to do. Cheers!

I’m curious, I keep seeing people commenting how content creators are deterministic with Kibbe and use it as rules more than guidelines- do you have any such example of a creator? @@hypatiakovalevskayasklodow9195 There are some content creators out there that are more strict with the system of David Kibbe. I don't want to name and shame, but the system itself is far more deterministic than, for instance, John Kitchener's system of essences' blend. That being said, my main concern when writing what I've written was mainly regarding the way content consumers will adopt those. Trying hard to find your identity and enjoy a sense of belonging to a certain group, a structured system such as that can lead to a far more deterministic approach than intended by the creator of the system at the time it was created. Such strict adherence may eventually lead not to finding your true self and living up to your full potential, but to narrow yourself down, or worse, to a self-deprecation. As those are not science and when the creators of those systems themselves retype certain people, trying hard to adhere to any such system may well result in incorrect typing to begin with, so....

Oh man as a soft dramatic with edgy style I was really hoping you’d have something to say on the topic but my type was the only type not really addressed in this video. But I get why, there are very few good examples. I’ve spent my whole life trying to figure out how to look edgy but still respect my lines and you’re right, it’s not easy and it’s not the way the other types do it. I think the secret is in a lot of ways our type on its own quite edgy or intimidating. I used to try to mix in a lot of gamine punk styles and it was very unflattering for whole entire looks, but now I find that if I lean harder into the soft dramatic type I look more intimidating. I would say the distressed thing is also correct. Perfectly following our lines but in darker colors makes us look very put together, diva-esqe, and maybe even unapproachable which is on its own intimidating. Adding in a distressed element (like messy makeup or ripped tights) to that really sends it into edgy territory. There are still some gamine elements in there, like fishnet shirts under my dresses or chokers, but just a very little bit and overall I find that the more soft dramatic I dress, the edgier it is as long as style wise I bring in a lot of punk reminiscent elements, like black and leather and fishnet.

It seems so difficult to find soft dramatic content in general. The outfit examples generally nice but are either from the 1950's or for older women, and I'm in college, I want to dress like I'm in college. However, I'm absolutely all for dressing like Taylor Momsen, so I guess I'll go with that.

love the way you describe how hard it is for a soft dramatic to look 'edgier'. To try looking more goth or punk or rock, those styles still require a woman to look cute in her darkness I think. Dramatics, FN and SD send a different vibe, a much more masculine kind of power or edge. How could we look super cute and smallish when we're basically taller than half of the guys around us? Us SD already ARE intimidating in our strong diva essence. :D
My tips on how to look edgy and still embrace the tall curvy woman vibes I send to the world:
      Makeup & hair
      * dyed my hair black
      * my hair is long and sleek, so I made it an advantage and they look like a long black curtain that contrasts with my chunky cheeks and lips and bold eyes
      * either a natural makeup with emphasized brows and 2 layers of mascara or
      * a thick black winged eyeliner AND smokey eyes at once to emphasize that contrast even more
      * sometimes a deep red lip too
      Clothing 'rules'
      * not just pure black clothes but also dark forest green, ruby red, dark aubergine, deep navy, charcoal grey, and for contrast bright red and pure white, neutral tan (the color of your skin)
      * use color blocks - combine neutrals with red, or combine neutrals with ONE of the 'more colorful' colors like deep green, navy, aubergine
      * materials like leather, cashmere, denim, satin, lace, suede
      * for prints, a schoolgirl-vibe diamond print or b&w leopard print
      * lines must be contransting, include both skinny and chunky, hugging the body and a bit of separates
      Outfits
      * a little washed-out, charcoal grey oversized metal band t-shirt, tucked into hig waisted skinny jeans, black leather belt with metallic ornamemt buck, black leather boots kind of like Dr. Martens that can be chunky in vertical lines (a platform, not heels) fitting the narrowness of the feet and ankles, a relaxed black leather jacket, cropped below the waist, a kind of rocker style, uneven hem, some fussy details like multiple zippers
      * matte leggings, very oversized tan croptop, oversized white cropped puffer jacket, dr. Martens and a smaller bun on top of the head, black thin cotton bag with logo/print
      * off shoulders black long sleeve top, black high waisted tight leather miniskirt, black suede boots that cover calfs or even overknee boots, big heavy at least knee- long charcoal grey smoothly fitting wool coat with fur around the neck and wrists, leather gloves
      * black fitting tank top, low waisted slightly oversized tan cargo pants in thick cotton cut similarly as mumjeans, chains, Dr. Martens
      * menswear - black high-waisted jeans or charcoal grey wide leg flowy pants, oversized black jacket with angular shoulder pads and slightly longer hemline, tight fitting white tee with round neckline, white sneakers, gold hoops, a rectangle notebook bag
      * dark mini turtleneck dress hugging the curves, black harness on top, high booties (overknee or lower ones with sexy stockings that have this 'I am wearing overknee socks' feel)
      * white long sleeve body with scoop neckline, harness, red A-line diamond print miniskirt, sexy stockings, Dr.Martens, long black&red nails
      * black&white leopard turtleneck, black high waisted skinny jeans, soft suede black cropped jacket lined with black fur, sharp pointed outline booties, red lipstick
      * white blouse with a deep heart neckline and long sharp puffed sleeves, charcoal grey ripped skinny jeans, Dr Martens
      * black lace brallete top, wide leg flowy charcoal grey pants, red lips, wet hair style, long earrings, sharp stilletos, a soft black fur to hug around shoulders, metallic bag
Maybe it's just me but I feel super edgy & powerful and yet feminine in this kind of clothing

These "edgy" subcultures, as punk, grunge, goth and so forth, were an expression of the opposite and a voice against the obvious promiscuity and superficiality in the music and film industries, and society as a whole. Although outsiders of these cultures would maybe have this type of interpretation, promiscuity is absolutely not included in the description of these subcultures, but political thought, creativity and intelligence -to some degree. These started as an external expression of internal thoughts and feelings, usually as a political protest, but are now copied as an external style by mainstream people without understanding.

For the 1800s era, during first wave feminism in the Western world, we had the “Rational Dress Movement”, also known as dress reform, which was focused on practically and comfort, and left a legacy of simplifying women’s sportswear. They were also primarily responsible for a lot of the myths about corsets at the time, bad information which still persists today. Proponents of this movement were also linked to progressive-era movements such as women’s suffrage, the temperance movement, abolishing slavery, and “moral purity”, and thought that by changing women’s clothes (primarily white women who were middle class and up) radically away from current/previous fashions, they could completely change women’s role in society and that society as a whole would benefit. (You can definitely hear the echoes of the Puritan movements of the 1600s here!)
A related movement, more about the clothes and promoted by artists rather than societal activists, was the Artistic Dress movement, which was first made famous by the artists of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood. These men and women, who were also part of the Arts and Crafts design movement which was itself a rejection of mass production/industrialism, were inspired by ideals, art, methods, and materials they associated with the Medieval and Renaissance times. In everything they made, they were espousing simplicity, old fashioned (by hand) craftsmanship, natural colors and high quality materials, and everything was about this aesthetic as a symbol of a more simple and natural way to live and create things. In women’s clothes especially, it was a rejection of even basic fashion, and may have appeared costumey (like most things artists do, it was definitely seen as a bit eccentric/alternative, even as they were all moderately successful in their careers). Men’s clothes were included as well but as their styles didn’t change as quickly, I get the impression that there wasn’t so much of a difference in style to be something that really drew the attention of mainstream society the way the women’s gowns did.
This later evolved into the Aesthetic Dress movement, which retained the elements of simplicity of line/construction in clothes, and use of high quality fabrics, and motifs from nature and earlier centuries, but was also a rejection of the Rational Dress movement’s adherence to total practically in clothing and association with morality. Aesthetic Dress was about treating clothes as an art form, an integration of artistic ideals into everyday life, and as something to provide sensuous pleasure and beauty. It was adopted by many bohemian and artist types of the last two decades on the 1800s, and incorporated global influences on silhouettes and fabrics (like from east Asian dress styles) in addition to more nostalgic or old-fashioned silhouettes and hand-work, and could be quite eccentric and showy. This included the men’s fashions; think Oscar Wilde! Definitely “alternative”!
It’s quite interesting that through history, alternative statements against mainstream fashion could be either a rejection of a focus on how clothes look, or an embrace of how clothes can look that pushes the boundaries, or both! But in all cases, the clothes were a statement to the world about the wearer’s values and the way of life. No matter how much we would like to not be judged by how we look, and make an effort ourselves to “not judge a book by it’s cover”, fashion choices and how we look is a message, a form of communication we have with all who see us, so it’s good to be able to understand and feel like we have some control over the statements are making!

This makes complete sense bc I believe I'm a gamine, but I usually dress more masculine, and it gives off the edgy vibe I'm going for. On the flip side, when I dress in more classic apparel, I look very formal without trying. Now I know why!
But if I try wearing many accessories, or a lot of makeup, I look a hot mess. I do look great with short hair like you said, and when I grow out my hair, I give off a whimsical hippy look which I'm into lol.

What we see today as alternative is deeply rooted in goth. In the very late 70s and the early til mid 80s that style was defined through music. Look at what people would wear in the batcave for example.
For me though I listen to goth music it was always too rigid. So you’re right, everyone needs to find their own style, that fits their type.
I am naturally blonde and have blue/green eyes but my skin tone is warm, nothing cool about me. So, I have to wear gold jewelry, silver washes me out. I exclusively wear black, I tried some colors but it just isn’t me. I think , I only truly knew my own style around 26 honestly and now enjoy fashion. When I was a teenager my body type wasn’t in, so I just felt wrong and uninterested in fashion.

This video just closed a huge gap for me. Thank you a lot for making it. I love edgy styles and ever since I know my type I struggled combining my own lines with the edgy look I love. But I always loved sort of Gamine lines on me (I'm a Soft Natural) and felt drawn to them. I also prefer Flamboyant Natural lines over Soft Natural lines. Maybe I never was off track. I just prefer a different look for myself rather than looking just "pretty". I incorporate Natural lines all the time, and noticed that loose shirts, and more casual clothes don't look sloppy on me either, but I feel "boring" wearing only my own lines. I love adding a little edge to the overall look. I also prefer high necklines and crop tops paired with very high waisted pants. I know how to look chic if I want to, but that's often times not what I really want. Thanks again, I think this was just the missing link I was looking for.

As a soft dramatic, I think I look particularly edgy when I wear for example a boxy, masculine top with a long line on the bottom. In general masculine clothes that make you look broadened in one part of your body, that is contrasted by a more long, (in line with our dramatic line) other item to balance out the boxyness works really well.
Due to our softness we often look very feminine, so one item that swallows the frame with harshness makes us look really non-feminine and in turn edgy

as an edgy flamgam myself, i have to say i entirely disagree about it being hard for us to look edgy. i mean, look at Liza Minnelli, Debbie Harry, or Emma Roberts as Madison Montgomery. i think that combining broken lines, some natural silhouettes, and generally details that can be construed as "edgy" is an excellent way to channel the edgy style. also flamboyant gamines can pull off dark and bold eye makeup very easily. the advice you gave to soft gamines applies to flamboyant gamines as well, so i'm a little disappointed that your section on flamboyant gamines felt so limited. further, even looking at the verified flamgams only, there are a lot of women with very strong features that are not at all cutesy or costumey. sure, the look didn't suit Zooey Deschanel very well, but there are absolutely flamboyant gamines who wear the style well. this is a great video overall, don't get me wrong, i just was expecting a little more from the section on my type.

      - “Innately, you are Yang in energy (aggressive and dynamic), Yin in youthfulness (fresh).”
      - “The underlying theme for your appearance is: "Rules were made to be broken!"

totally get what you mean about flamboyant gamines. i have a bit of edginess in my style, but it usually just looks pretty harmonious on me, so if i want to amp it up, i do it through bolder moves like a black lip!

Yes, I was watching for the DC content. I’m DC and a dark winter. I feel like I look like I’m playing at classic or playing at romantic if I don’t have some Yang elements. Ellie did make one suggestion that stuck with me, I do look edgy if I respect my lines but wear lace. But I need more than this. lol

Found out I'm apparently a theatrical romantic, but I'm a gnc woman ("soft butch" to some) and pretty muscular, so finding fashion that I both like and feel confident in while also complimenting my body type has been a struggle. On some level I recognized form fitting stuff worked better for me, but all the theatrical romantic outfits are all hyper feminine looks that just aren't me.

I wanna critique that you are simplifying alternative fashion as “edgy”
However, we can’t forget lolita, decora kei, yami kawaii are also alternative fashion even if they aren’t exactly the typical edgy. They are delicate or neon or pastel and that’s just so beautiful about alternative fashion. There’s so much more to it and I would’ve preferred if you addressed that or didn’t use “alternative fashion” and “edgy” interchangeably

I’m a flamboyant gamine and I’ve actually always been drawn to clothes and lines that went against me because I never wanted to be girly or cute when I was a kid. I didn’t even know about kibbe or anything until a few years back. All I knew is wearing certain clothes gave me a vibe I felt more powerful and in control with and so I just stuck with that until puberty. Now watching this it all makes perfect sense lol

But Rihanna is the most iconic and edgy Theatrical romantic! Sad you didn't use her as a reference, I was looking forward to hearing more about that as a TR. We are often overlooked and lumped in with pure romantics.

I agree! It should be easier to make a TR look edgy, not more difficult. Also, I disagree that winters are rare, and they are not all dark, as a matter of fact they make the best high contrast champagne blondes (and lighter) of any season.

How is Billie Eilish not a romantic? Everything from her round facial features, rounded shoulders, short limbs... Have you seen her in her boudour shoot? To me she is so similiar to Emilia Clarke with a little higher body fat percentage.

    • @lucyk2634

I didn't see Billie for a long time but as I remember she have quite big bones, especially in upper part, shoulders, ribs and arms. Much bigger than a romantic could ever have. I understand shortness confuses you but you should just compare it to her head, then you will see... Romantics have quite bigger head in comparison to their body (and bone structure), but Billie have much bigger bone structure than her head.

I'm a TR, and people has always seen my style as edgy. Now I understand it's because I use a lot of oversized rustic clothes, more of a natural feel.
It's a relief to have that option, because I get overwhelmed with my femininity sometimes...
