  • Your style is not lazy, it's just athleisure. Athleisure is the most important fashion trend of the 2010s to now and it's for a reason - in 2023 comfort is STYLE. Your lazy days don't need to be your unfashionable days - your sporty, practical, casual items can have their moment if you style them right.

      I believe leggings are NOT pants but I have Stone because I like the jeans and a tee vibe, denim shorts, dressing down something too pretty and a bit of a street style vibe. I don't think stone has to be leggings. Plus I also love to dress up super girly!

      @@stephallen9819 Same. For me leggings are for working out, lounging at home or sleeping, or maybe under a shorter dress in place of tights in winter (I like the jumper dress, leggings and boots combo for autumn-winter). I do like the opinions Ellie proposed though for wearing athleasure without wearing leggings, or to combine leggings with something more dressy to elevate it.

    I'm a soft classic and for some reason whenever I wear mushroom + stone (or I like to call it cozy athleisure) I look like I'm living my best life and thriving. I guess the simplicity and balance really works for soft classics, or something, it just looks right and makes me feel so confident

    So Ms. Elle, I have followed you for quite some time. As a writer and former actor, your insight into wardrobe and character profile never ceases to amaze me.
    But I think your greatest gift, and I will be waiting for your future styling tv show, is how you break down style to its most bare bones. Never in my life would I have considered using this aesthetic. It seemed to boxy, and kind of stiff for my romantic ingenue frame. But the moment you mentioned ballet core, it’s like a freaking lightbulb went off in my brain. I have always hated casual clothes because it never mind ME pop. Now I’m going on Amazon immediately so I can finally look decent in casual wear! ❤

    I do alot of long dog walks, gardening and exercise classes and so always thought stone was one of my roots because naturally I'm often in clothes that match stone. But this video has been really useful in showing me how I can wear "practical items" and still compliment my roots (Mushroom, Moon and fire)

    • @mampsikka4829
      @mampsikka4829 Před 8 měsíci +2

      I wear a lot of stone clothes too, but that's just because they fit my life now (mom with three young kids😅), not because the look especially appeals to me. This video really made that clear to me - I love the look on others, but when I want to look nice, not just practical, these are not the clothes I reach for.

    • @s.a.4358
      @s.a.4358 Před 8 měsíci +1

      I think that is where the difference of stone versus mushroom or stone versus earth comes in, because those two also have a casual element. But mushroom is casual tending towards minimalistic and smart-casual and Earth is casual tending towards outdoors / sporty and maybe boho for a feminine element.
      I have both mushroom and earth (together with flower) so it took me a while to understand that I am not stone.
      I also think it can make a difference if we wear athleasure / casual on the top or bottom half, because of body type. I easily look sloppy if I wear too loose trousers - even if it’s formal trousers they that are wide leg - but for example straight leg jeans with a sweater that is oversized or a hoody looks good on me. I can apparently only do athleasure on my top half 😅

    I’m a Moon-Stone-Earth girlie! I am a stay at home mom with two young kids so casual comfort is an important part of my daily wardrobe and I’ve really embraced that. To me it’s a little bit of rebellion too, I refuse to be uncomfortable. Now that I’ve embraced that aspect of myself, I have really elevated my athlesiure game and I’m so confident in this personal style I’ve curated 🩶

    I love your suggestions on how to pair stone with other style roots! While stone is not one of my main style roots (moon, mountain, mushroom). I often wear athletic/sporty outfits because I love weight lifting, martial arts, hiking, and camping. Since I’ve been more conscious of my personally style, I try to choose comfortable and practical clothes that also fit into my style roots.

    For your style roots, I think we can also lean towards one or another depending on our mood etc. and vary in to which degree we want to express them, if that makes sense. So for instance for me the difference is really big in my flower root; some days it is my main focus, while other days I don't want to feel delicate so I don't incorporate it.

    I was trying to figure out if I have stone, and the stone + earth combo totally fits my style! I wear some hiking boots and a baseball cap with almost all my outfits (even more artistic/expressive and formal outfits) and I didn’t think to attribute it to stone. In retrospect it makes so much sense though! It’s also convenient since both fit with my Natural essence and kibbe type. Now i just need to figure out if I lean more flower or sun for my third style root, and I’m all set.

    I love cozy athleisure styles like black joggers and hoodies! However, and I don’t even know if this counts as athleisure, one trend I can’t get onboard is biker shorts/workout gear under a blazer! To me it just looks messy 😅 I think in a few years we’ll be cringing at that style.

      I totally get where you're coming from, it feels like they should clash because it's a mix of extremes, but I just went to look at pictures and it's not that bad to me somehow. I think it's because it's all crisp, smooth-looking and structured fabric, which helps to tie the together. One thing I noticed is that if the person in the photo is wearing a slouchier outfit, like with sweatpants, they have a matching blazer, for example tweed, which isn't as stiff.

    Thank you for this video! When you did your original style roots tests, I didn't get stone - in fact, I only got two styles roots (overwhelmingly flower and moon) and the rest were tied at three terms each. Now, after this deep dive into stone, I realized hey, not only do I wear clothes similar to stone/flower and stone/moon, but I've already been wearing clothes similar to your elevated stone ideas! So Flower/Moon/Stone it is! Thanks for helping me find my third style root!❤

    Hello! Just want to say that it was one of your shorts on the rockstar girlfriend aesthetic where you showed different style roots in that particular style that has made me realise my first official core style root is stone! It then led me to this video and now it's confirmed that 🪨 and 🌸 are my 2 style roots (haven't figured out the 3rd yet, just doing 2 for now). Like many, I was confused with this concept because I prioritised what I THOUGHT I needed to be over who I truly am, that includes overcoming the stories I kept telling myself about myself (which aren't true). 🪨 and 🌸 is very much what my teenage self loved to wear and I didn't realise how she is and always has been the core of who I am. Shopping is so much easier now. Thank you!

    Please do a video on ethereal essence + other essences.
    I feel like there aren’t many ethereals other than the very typical examples so it’s a bit confusing.
    I think i have ethereal/natural/dramatic but I haven’t figured out how ethereal and natural combine (i think maybe zoe kravitz might be an example?)
    Why i say this.. I feel best and get most complimented in arsty looks and get mystical adjacent compliments (mystical, goddess, etc). I have high contrast though so dark hair and light skin so I don’t “fade” like typical ethereal examples.
    My style roots are earth, flower and moon and I’ve found a great style for anyone with the same as me who might want inspo - my style is a lot of patterns and retro 70s inspired, artsy patterns like paintings as fabrics and corset style tops. Mixing harsher elements like leather and vintage jackets with softer elements. I wear a lot of gold jewelry all at the same time like 3-4 necklaces, earrings, multiple rings on both hands on my three “middle” fingers, even a nose ring sometimes without it looking overwhelming and I get a lot of compliments. Basically I wear what I want and may seem costume-y on others but is authentic on me. I lean into ☀️ space iconography (planets and not of this world).
    Bright bold (dramatic) and light girly (ingenue) do not look good on me at allll and neither does the sultry styles or trendy insta baddie. I can wear androgynous styles and oversized without looking too overwhelmed but can’t wear cutesy or ornate feminine styles or emo/goth styles without looking out of place. Im quite tall and lean so it helps. I also cant wear face makeup without looking too much instantly. My friend is similar to me, i’d say her style roots are much more moon leaning and she wears similar styles to me but darker and more moon like (she’s probably a moon, flower, fire?) so she’s much softer and more romantic than me (personality and looks). She wears flowy romantic dresses and soft knits and lots of silver but still has her very unique style that isn’t trendy at all.
    So yeah that’s some inspo, thanks for reading this far haha

    Love athleisue wear when you’re busy doing sports/fitness class, shopping, organising, appointments, etc… Also like the classic ‘preppy’ style for smart/casual wear too when you don’t want to be looking too laid back or relaxed. So helpful esp the last part! Bc I am autistic and dyspraxic I wear a lot of athleisure to meet my sensory and fine motor needs. But I don't think stone is one of my style roots, and I often feel I'm sacrificing style for comfort. I've been trying to balance the two, and you've illustrated some great ways to do that.
    Fortunately, I think a lot of brands are starting to blur the lines now between athleisure and casual chic or business casual by making the former more smart and the latter more comfortable. Athleta, Eddie Bauer, Express, Universal Standard, Target and even Walmart are good examples of this.
    A "hack" I've found is to shop in the maternity section even if you're not pregnant. Maternity clothes are not all oversized in the stomach as many are made to accommodate a changing shape, they come in a wide range of styles, and they are incredibly soft and stretchy.

    I'm still not sure how or if this falls into my style exactly, but I default to "althleisure adjacent + not looking so great" for my daily wear due to work. It's become so unpredictable I never know when I show up to the office if I'm going to be at my desk all day, up to my knees in a hole digging out a well, putting up 50 yards of fence board, or having to interact with homeowners or suppliers in town. It has honestly negatively impacted my self-esteem and how I feel about clothes in general. Definitely gonna have to give this another watch and see if there's a way to make myself feel better while maintaining the functionality I need.

    Earth is definitely my primary style root, and I’m trying to decide the other two main roots. I basically know it’s not flower or fire, and it’s probably not moon because the color palette for moon really does not mix well with my color season, and that leaves mushroom, mountain, stone, and sun as options. I love practical, comfortable clothes - which would lean mushroom and stone - but I also really like that sort of wealthy, sophisticated connotation you get with mountain. I guess the total vibe I’m trying to give off at any given time is best described as “70s sleaze ex-rocker who tuned in, turned on, and dropped out after prep school didn’t go great for him” and I’m not sure what roots would encompass that best, lmao.

      @s.a.4358 Před 8 měsíci +1

      Maybe earth is your third one? Jeans and T-shirts can also be very earth + there is a casual and relaxed element to it. The way I understand it ‘stone’ is more sporty, looks good even in very casual clothes, skater girl, urban style, graffiti, etc and earth is more walk in nature or picnic in the park, gardening, pottery or painting, sport leaning more towards yoga (more connections with nature / self and less running) etc.
      Ultimately I do think that there is some cross over between roots though, so especially with the roots that are not our dominant one it can be harder to pinpoint. It’s also perfectly fine to take inspiration from other roots.

    Thank you! This video gave me some good ideas. That said, I'm wondering if you could talk about how to do Moon and Fire in a comfortable, flexible way for someone with chronic pain and health issues? I don't really identify with stone very much, but I end up dressing that way a lot. I can't wear tight pants, or things that put a lot of pressure on my neck and shoulders, and I have a lot of low-energy days. I also have a job and a dog to take care of, so I can't always wear beautiful flowing things (though I do wear a lot of maxi dresses when I can, and I LOVE them.)
    I'm tall with broad shoulders (probably flamboyant natural). I love feeling sultry and magical, but my lifestyle and my health sway me away from those details. I usually end up looking like a big lump, or a lumberjack at best (earth is one of my roots for sure, so at least lumberjack is close to that?)

    • @EmL-kg5gn
      @EmL-kg5gn Před 8 měsíci +2

      It always varies depending on the person and the day, but I have a few chronic health issues and fire is one of my style roots. I totally agree about maxi dresses!! I love them but I find midi-length (or shorter) ones more practical. For me earrings help a lot, and I also have quite a few different styles of scrunchies so even if I just throw my hair in a ponytail (or realistically a braid to avoid knots) it adds something. I think you could still use the colours from your style roots with more casual clothes, and also incorporate them in prints. I used to have a few tshirts that really fit with my fire style root because of the print! Not that she’d created style roots yet but still 😂 I also had a basic black long sleeve shirt with some lace panels on shoulders that I think was a great blend of fire and moon. And you can take care with choosing materials. To me soft or silky materials are part of fire! And they’re comfy, although they’re not always the most practical 😅 I think having a go to pair of shoes that includes your style roots also helps and is worth taking the time to think about and find. I have a pair of sneakers that are pink and shimmery, and they were cheap too! Also socks!!! There’s some really unique socks out there. For me waist emphasis is really important, for my kibbe type, comfort, and style, so there might be one aspect of silhouette that’s the most important to you too? Also you can always sacrifice one of your nicer items of clothing, I have a dress that I designated for days when I have to do messy, practical stuff but still really want to feel flowy 😂

      I don’t think athleasure is the only way to do stone. I think it’s more that athleasure is very representative of stone’s casual and sporty essence + it is a fashion trend that is current, so Ellie is also addressing that.
      Ultimately it will also depend on your blend, because stone + mountain for example will have the formal influence of mountain, stone + flower will be more feminine / girly, etc. Living environment and culture also plays a role, because leggings and cargo pants are not acceptable clothing in all context and are still more casual than jeans.

  • @abigailpettit9083

    I'm struggling with the style roots a little bit. I think some of them are more function related, like stone. There are times where athleisure, even elevated athleisure, makes sense, but you can still style it in a way that doesn't make you feel sloppy. And mountain seems like it's more for a corporate environment anyway. Whereas moon, fire, flower, sun, earth, and mushroom seem more like the expression of your environment. (E.g., you're going to work but if you're moon + fire, you opt for a silk top with some lace fringe underneath a black blazer + pencil skirt.) So it feels more like stone and mountain are "foundational" and "environmental." Wearing leggings, a cropped sweater, trainers, and an overcoat to go to workout, see a friend, and then coffee is more like "stylish utility" rather than "I like being casual" - but you wouldn't wear the same outfit in an office setting. Maybe I'm just not understanding quite how they work?

    Can you make flower and earth together? I have earth, flower and mushroom as my style roots but its hard to find examples. I like dresses and matching sets that has natural and floating farbrics (I am also flamboyant natural) but I dont like too girly styles as well (but I am trying to lean into that because I have ingenue essence mostly yin) so I pair them with mushroom style colors and fabrics. It would be really helpful if you combine flower and earth ❤

    • @s.a.4358
      @s.a.4358 Před 8 měsíci

      Omg are you me?! I am also a flamboyant natural with ingenue essence and earth, mushroom, flower as my style roots.
      It took me a while I figure out that I have flower as a style root because I do not dress very girly and cutesy. But the ingenue influence and also my personality is the flower element.
      I think being a flamboyant natural (and in my case also plus size) makes it somewhat harder to introduce the flower element, because FNs tend towards broader and taller and flower & ingenue tends towards small and cute, which is quite opposite. I also find that if I go too much into boho style, which one could see as a good way to combine earth and flower, it can easily look too hippy / Mother Earth and almost messy.

    • @amecourt
      @amecourt Před 8 měsíci

      @@s.a.4358 :D I am a shorter flamboyant natural which is kinda ruins the fun of chunky clothes too (I am 1.65 cm) when I wear something too chunky or too yang (like oversized blazer with straight jeans) my face is screaming from my proportion. I have a cheeky face so my body looks good but my head looks photoshopped :D so I tried to bring some cuteness near my face as Ellie recommended but it didn't look quite well together. So I lean into boho dresses and floating fabrics which has both flower and earth elements but I didn't like them to be too boho patterned or too girlish (I also have an undying love for mushroom styles with old money aesthetic too. Like Jennifer Lawrence's new street style) moral of the story I am so confused and need help.. I hope she sees it and it'll help us find more examples.
