    There are failings on two counts.
    Firstly, the grounding was clear and a try should have been awarded.
    On the basis that the couldn’t evidence that, then the second offence is by Tuilagi lying over the player preventing clear release.
    That is a penalty to Scotland and a yellow card, and the question then becomes should a penalty try be awarded?

    If Scotland had been 15 points ahead at the 80th minute, nobody would be appaled by this decision. As a French, I think it was a try and feel sorry for Scotland but why didn't they score 2 tries or more, particularly at 15 vs 14? The seeds of defeat were sown earlier in the game.

    Problem was Berry says "no try" and that leaves the TMO with a mountain to climb to prove definitively that it touched the line.

    I think two things can be true - Scotland should have been able to win without that last try, and they were also robbed by an incorrect decision. England should have been able to put more points on Wales than they did, but you can't argue that they didn't do enough to win. Same applies for Scotland, poor in periods of the game and didn't take their chances, but still did enough to win at the death if not for what is in my opinion a shocking decision.

  • @brianmsahin
    @brianmsahin Před 5 měsíci +2

    I agree Max, they weren't robbed, at least by the TMO. Once the ref decided it was held up it was up to seeing conclusive video evidence of it being grounded. There was none. Another point many forget, the ball rolled a little forward off the boot and that would have been a knock on. As for the game, if it wasn't as close as it was, I would have fallen asleep over my pint in the Irish bar. It was a woeful game with huge chunks of time wasted on kick volleyball with Scotland having no clue about what to with the ball.

    I watched back the 'disallowed try" last night and formed a different opinion, here's the points to look at;
    1) the position of the referee, he was in the perfect spot to see the grounding if it occurred.
    2) The reaction of the Scottish players, none of them were celebrating even before the ref announced his decision.
    3) On one angle shot you can clearly see a French hand under the ball.
    Sorry Scotland fans but I concluded it was NO TRY,

    Hi Max, I think you generally tick most of the boxes with your analysis, but sorry, this time Scotland have been plain cheated out of a cleansheet (and possible Grand slam-as of yeterdays full time whistle). You ask why? ...take a look at the French try against the Irish in Marseille, no obvious grounding, no footage to support the refs "summise" that they were over the line, and this time they get the split decision in their favour once again...in France the result was never going to be altered, Ireland were massive & blew them off the pitch, but here the run of the Championship for Scotland has been altered, both attempts were vid scutinised to the death, and both had 100% differing results, both in favour of France.
    Makes me wonder if that feels "fair" this morning, regardless of which fan block you sat in!

    • @brianmsahin
      @brianmsahin Před 5 měsíci +1

      I don't think Scotland grounded the ball, at least it wasn't clear and anyway rolling it over the boot would technically have been a knock on anyway. However I get your point, but it's the on field decision by the ref that made the difference. The on field decision in the French situation was try. That's a key difference. But as for it stopping Scotland win a Grand Slam, that was never going to happen, though it would have been nice to have a GS decider in Dublin.

  • @d.jparer5184
    @d.jparer5184 Před 5 měsíci +7

    Wales fan here, I usually like your analysis but this is pretty silly. By blaming Scotland here we are completely aleiviating responsibility from the ref. We should be able to admit that the referee robbed scotland AND that scotland didnt play well enough earlier in the game. Both things can be true at once.
    If a player is over the line and nobody is beneath him then it should be assumed that a try has been scored unless you see evidence that it was held up. There was no evidence that the ball was held up so nick berry should have said "on field decision try" then the tmo would have to find clear evidence that it was held up which he obviously wouldnt find. This is like throwing a dinner plate out of your window, hearing a smash but assuming that it didnt break because you didnt phisically see it break. Nick berry decided to give france the benefit of the doubt that they held it up although he couldn't see it, that cost scotland the game. This is mainly nick berry's fault but i would argue that the tmo had enough evidence go say that it was grounded due to the paint of the try line being visible on the grass behind where the ball is grounded.
    We are currently experiencing a crisis in rugby refereeing and nobody is talking about it, instead you either get shouted down or told that only bad teams complain about the ref. We just had a RWC final ruined by wayne barnes terrible refereeing and everyone just seems happy to make no changes and hope for different results. Nick berry's decision yesterday perfectly mirrors a crucial disallowed try in the WAL vs ITA game 2 years ago. Wyn jones goes over the line with nobody beneath him. Andrew brace inexplicably calls "on field decision no try" and joy neville can't see past the mass of bodies so its chalked off. Nothing has changed in two years so im sure this will continue to happen in 2 years time. I think we need an independent commission to monitor referees behaviour, not for marginal calls but for calls like this where a ref essentially decides who wins have to be severely punished.

    • @TheBlackJersey
      @TheBlackJersey  Před 5 měsíci +2

    • @d.jparer5184

      @@TheBlackJersey exactly! Why should refereeing be a meritocracy? It's better to treat referees like gods who can't be criticised lest they get offended and quit. If they don't want to be criticised then just like the players, the referees are in the wrong game. It's opinions like yours that means that the quality of refereeing will never improve. We'll still be having these issues in 10 years time because we refuse to call this what it is. I'm not talking about marginal, debatable calls I'm talking about big, game breaking decisions that have been happening consistently for years and never get brought up because referees are treated by some in the rugby community as holy entities that cannot be at fault and cannot be improved upon.

Nick berry assumed that France held it up and that assumption cost Scotland the game. Unless you can prove that a ball was held up then it should be assumed that a try was scored, with all the cameras on the field we should be able to see what nick berry saw. Upon review, there was no evidence of it being held up. He should have called "on field decision try" and then they would have had to prove that France hold it up which obviously they didn't.

      @d.jparer5184 Basically you just prove my point. You're saying the ref should award things your team's way, and if he doesn't, it's a conspiracy against you. Isn't it more likely that, for whatever reason, Nic Berry didn't think a try had been scored and that's why he said "no try" and then invited the TMO to see if there was footage that proved otherwise? If it had gone the other way, French fans would just be making your point instead. Fans of all teams need to accept that the officials are operating "in good faith" and sometimes you won't be on the right side of a hard call!

    Happy with the win but definitely not with the manner though. We were so poor, weak & boring to watch that I barely recognized my team. I think the new staff may be the reason why.
    Also about the TMO call, its a damn if they do or damn if they dont scenario tbh and I can understand if the Scots feels cheated tbh but I found weird how they didnt check how Russell gathered the ball right before that since he seemed pretty offside + does a knock-on to me lol. You miss the point my friend. The way a game is played does not go into the history annals, nor does it give world ranking points. The result is what counts and in this case a totally inept ref and TMO cost Scotland an opportunity to challenge for a slam, triple crown, championship win, world rankings. Everyone watching knows it was a try. Rugby has become a laughing stock when a TMO says yes Nick, ball is grounded, let me have another look ... well can't see every blade of grass and my lunch is ready and my best mate Pierre says the ball clearly videoed on the ground over the try line might not be a try, given the shadow of Mars cast through the moon ... no ... no evidence that the ball on the ground under a Scottish chest is on the ground ... eh ... let me look at this ball on the ground again ... could be on top of and ant, or maybe a leaf ... can't quite disprove that ... must be worms under the soil of Murrayfield so I am going to say the ball you can see grounded is not evidence of a grounded ball and therefore no try. You can look at the game all you want but what has been taken away from the Scots here from the ridiculous decision has put rugby in the frame for laughing stock.
