They won because NZ missed their last 2 penalty kicks. You snooze, you lose. Winning 3 consecutive matches by 1 point against world class oposition, while coming from behind in 2 of them, is the definition of grit. I was cheering for NZ in the final, but what the Boks managed to do at this RWC is stuff of legends. Hats off to them!

The worst thing about Rugby are all the rules! You basically have to grow up with it to understand most of them, and one of the best things about rugby are all the rules and its bloody complexity! This is why we debate the rules and interpretation.

Great analysis! I think NZ did very well with 1 less on the field. The Boks were tired after the England and France clashes so sheer will was the only thing pushing the team. Taking the win being down in all the metrics says a lot about the Boks.

Great analysis, balanced and insightful - Thank you Max. As a Bok supporter I nearly had several heart attacks in the last 3 weeks of the RWC, and the final was absolutely EPIC, one of the best games of rugby, for so many reasons, to showcase not only the physical skills of the game, but the mental, chess-like aspects as well as the incredible coaching decisions… Gutted for heroes like Aaron Smith to leave this way… huge applause to the entire AB team for their monumental effort and guts… and it really could have gone either way. Very chuffed for the Bokke that it went our way, they all worked incredibly hard and deserved Gold! 😅

The only reason the Boks won this world cup was pure heart and determination. They had to grind it out for 3 matches in a row with nothing but guts. It has to be admired! Aspecially since they had to play all the top 5 teams in the world outside themselves in the same tournament

  • @ashg9023
    @ashg9023 Před 7 měsíci +11

Brother, this was one of the greatest world cups ever. Even if your team did not achieve what you hoped for them, we still got to see some of the best games in a rugby world cup. I would go as far as to say that 50% of all the best moments and games in a rwc were from 2023; Fiji knocking Australia out by losing to Portugal who absolutely deserved one win, Fiji carrying England players into touch, Fords consequetive drop goals, Zombie, The ambition of both Ireland and France, the certainty that this world cup was for Ireland or France to win, the symmetry of the All Blacks and Springboks knocking out each others bogeymen in two of the greatest games in rugby history - furthermore, the two teams coined to get to the final, England battering the life out of the Springbok players, after themselves being written off as a joke team, the NZ vs SA grudge match brewing for decades, and finally, lets not forget, the Springboks 1 point win in every knockout game.

Very good game play for both teams! When NZ scored a try, I'm pretty confident that it was a forward pass. The only other thing I have left to say: Everyone looks at the one team, opportunities lost. Please also look at the 4 tries that were prevented on SA's side. I haven't seen true honest videos until I see those. Look at 11:00 into the game and how NZ prevents us from scoring also kicking the ball away. Look at 40:01. For sure can give a bit more credit towards SA 44 mins into the game too. Finally after 66mins into the game.. SA had advantage, but... I'm just sad that SA is not acknowledged by anyone for these timestamps. Was still a good game, and NZ did very well with 14 players

I was in pretoria today along their route and you know for the first time it kinda struck me how many black people actually support the boks. By extreme margins, the majority of the people there were black and they were singing and dancing in anticipation for the boks' arrival. I think making kolisi captain really changed the black people of south africa's view on the boks. It started to break down the image of a bok as only being a white guy. I think kolisi actually did lots for the country's unity.

The final marks an end of an era for both teams. 4 years from now both of their line ups will be very different, but they'll probably still be the best 2 teams in the world. I think they always wanted to use defence but they planned on mixing it up with attack. When they lost Bongi early, their attacking platform was ended and all they had left was defence. So they were forced into 77min of defence rather than splitting up with attack. People underestimate the cost of loosing Bongi so early.

I have now watched the final about three times and more and more I feel the frustration which had build up after the first half hour of the game for the Blacks. There is no question about the individual quality of players in both teams. However there is beauty in the way SA worked as a team in a very energy efficient way. The Blacks played very charming with big and open hearts, but could not bring their strengths together finding flow and rhythm. The Boks kept their heads focussed to guide their hearts finding strength, flow an rhythm. The win was on the mental level. On the physical level the Blacks displayed more power but wasted their energy. And mistakes happen when you exhaust yourself. Thanks for all the hours you put in this analysis!

    • @jonwalter1533

Big respect man! Being a Bok fan, this was a accurate and concise analysis, putting the game first! The ref doesn't deserve the abuse. He's the best in the game. Agreed, the AB's had their chances to convert - no question about that. It came down to fine margins. Our line-outs were poor, but we found a way! The better team deserved to win. Just look at the boks journey to the final vs the AB's journey (oppositions)... But, massive respect to our biggest rivals. It was a colossal encounter between 2 of the greatest teams this sport has ever seen! Respect to the AB's. We all love of the game!
With that being said, what a game Du Toit had! Absolute animal! It's a bit shocking the rugby awards, only one Bok player in the team! Haibo! Even coach of they year, Ireland went on an unbeaten run, and ranked number #1 in the world, but when it came down to it, they couldnt break their QF curse.... Rassie or Jacque deserved it. It's okay though, we got the trophy, which is better than any other 'award'...

Not as sweet as 2015 when a ex South African hits a six off the last ball to put the under rated, under resourced, far less skilled blackcaps into the final. Or was that the South African 2nd XI?
The pity is I will admit that the Proteas would have had a better all round skill set to beat the Aussies
And I would have rather seen SA beat Aussie, even if it meant NZ losing to SA
But at the end of the day it is all just Sport, and we in NZ have plenty of other challenges, like the economy, crime, gangs drugs, climate change, weather events, etc.

Amazing analysis, Max - there was so much choice on CZcams this RWC, and you were one of a small handful of independents to stand out with amazing unbiased analysis. But this was a tough one with so much skin in the game for you!
From a subjective perspective (as a SAfer), to address your question, "How Did South Africa WIN the 2023 WORLD CUP FINAL?" I think the Bok's mindset was not to try to win, but rather they saw it as a title defence, and therefore, it was a fight to keep it - i.e. defend and let the opposition be the ones to come at them to try to take it away. And they managed to hold out to the end.

Hey mate. Great video. Great hearing these points from someone who supports the All Blacks, because if a Springboks supporter makes these point there might be a few people not agreeing with everything, but you kept very neutral and explained everything with GREAT detail. Awesome video. Again, congratulations to the All Blacks. My second favourite team after the Boks. Such a great nation and next level rugby they play year after year.

    Hi Max,
Thank you so much for this brilliant take! You've really earned my sub.
A few notes from my side:
2:33 - I think that is Franco Mostert (5) and not Eben Etzebeth
13:46 - That was Kurt-Lee Arense who made that tackle
24:07 - I really like that take on how that play decribes this All-Black team. I had to think about which play I would select for this Springbok team and one that came to mind is the final play in the quarter finals vs France where France were on the attack with game time in the red, just to get the ball ripped from Reda Wardi by Faf de Klerk and frantically collected by Kurt-Lee Arendse and kicked backwards into touch (almost hitting a collapsing Handre Pollard (a substitution) in the face. It just represents the pure determination and just getting things done no matter what it looks like.
27:25 Ah this moment, pure joy to watch. I just want people to appreciate this moment.
    Some other points.
    1. I'd like to hear your take on the massive tackle on Will Jordan by Cheslin Colbe (which lead to a brilliant, and almost surreal, takeover by Kwagga Smith)
    2. I think there can be much to discuss surrounding all the drop-goal attempts.
    3. I am so glad that Whitelock had that moment in the end. As a Springbok fan, this was still a bitter-sweet moment.
Again, thanks for your content and my commiserations on your loss. I think you can be proud.

Why can't paid network pundits just do this instead of the whinging. Both NZ and SA pundits are getting on my nerves. NZ after losing to SA, and SA after losing to Ireland. It just seems off, like they know it drives rage, which drives engagement, which drives viewership and ultimately revenue. Seems unbiased commentary is unprofitable.
