The waterfalls are about 25 kilometers away from Rethymno city, and can be reached by car or bus. There is a parking lot above the waterfalls, by the road that passes through the gorge. From there, you leads the path to the bottom of the gorge, where the waterfall is.
The beginning of the path is easily recognizable, thanks to a stone gate with a small chapel and a statue of an angel. The path is steep and rocky with many stairs, so you need to be careful and wear comfortable shoes. It takes about 15 minutes to walk down to the waterfall. Along the way, you will see the stunning scenery of the gorge, with its high cliffs and vegetation and a bit lower the path is separated in two directions. One of them passes by the Agios Nikolaos church, that is built on the edge of the rock. From there, you can continue to the small stone bridge and the viewpoint platform, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the waterfall and the river that flows through the gorge and meets the sea on famous Preveli Beach.
The waterfalls are formed by five springs that gush out of the rocks and fall into a small pool at the bottom of the gorge. According to a local legend, the springs were created by a miracle, when a priest prayed to God to stop a drought that was affecting the area.
If you want to get closer to the waterfall, you can take the other path that leads to the small lake. There, you can swim between the rocks and get under the waterfall, if you dare. You should be careful of the rocks and the current, and not swim alone. The water is cold and refreshing, and the experience is unique and unforgettable. You will feel like you are in a fairy tale, surrounded by the sound and the spray of the water. It is a piece of nature that will amaze you and make you feel alive.
