  • Greece Crete South Rethymno 4 beaches west of Plakias: Korakas, Polyrizos, Peristeri, Rodakino
West of Plakias, popular summer holiday destination of South Rethymnon, can be found multiple less known but beautiful beaches. We are going to see 4 of them in this video, starting from east to the west means also from the closer one to Plakias to the most distant.
Korakas beach is located 10 km west of Plakias. It’s the first beach after Souda beach if you drive from Plakias and along the road between Korakas and Souda beaches are very impressive rock formations on the coast. Korakas beach is organised beach mixed of pebbles and sand. Along the beach is road and also pedestrian path next to it and some tavernas and rooms to rent. At the eastern edge of the beach there are cliffs of specific shape that according to one version gave name to the place as they remind crow which is korakas in Greek.
Polyrizos beach is quite surprising place and yet might be considered as hidden gem, that can be found 16 km west of Plakias. This sandy beach with shallow crystal clear waters is surrounded by tavernas, accommodations and one small super market, but despite that remains rather calm as it’s one of the less known beaches of the area. Thanks to calm and shallow waters it is very suitable for families with children or non-swimmers and especially for those who enjoy fine sand beach that is calm but comfortably civilised as well.
Peristeres beach is located 17 km west of Plakias and if you are driving there from east, it looks just like beggining of Rodakino beach because it is actually long beach separated by rocks in two coves. You can get there also by 15 minutes walking the 1 km long hiking path on the cost from neighbouring Polyrizos beach. Peristeres beach is pebbly and organised with beach sets and beach bar. The name Peristeres, which in Greek means pigeons, was given because they are nesting in the cliffs by the eastern edge of the beach. The beach was a place of operation during the 2nd World War. German general Heinrich Kreipe was transferred to Egypt from this beach by resistance forces and Cretan rebels, which is nowadays reminded by a stone monument on the beach.
Rodakino beach is 17,5 km west of Plakias and just next to Peristeres beach. The road till Peristeres beach is asphalt but the last part from Peristeres to Rodakino beach is dirt road. Rodakino beach is pebbly beach with many small natural bays created by interesting rock formations. The sea is shallow but presence of many flat rocks make it difficult to be accessed in some parts. Carob trees and various bushes surrounding the beach provide natural shadow. Rodakino beach isn’t organised and is popular place of naturists.
