  • Minoan Palace of Phaistos/Phaistos Palace Crete Greece 4K
The Minoan Palace of Phaistos is located in south Crete in the Messara plain, 55 km south of Heraklion. It was built during the Bronze Age, around 1900 BCE. The palace reached its peak during the Middle Minoan period, around 1700-1600 BCE, when it was a center of political, economic, and cultural activity. The palace was destroyed and rebuilt several times throughout its history. The first destruction took place around 1700 BCE, possibly due to an earthquake. It was then rebuilt and further expansions and modifications were made. However, in the 15th century BCE, the palace was destroyed once again, likely as a result of a fire.
The site was abandoned after its final destruction and was not reoccupied. It was rediscovered and excavated in the early 20th century by Italian archaeologist Federico Halbherr and later by English archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans.
The palace of Phaistos was the 2nd largest Minoan palace in Crete, covering an area of about 8,000 square meters. Its strategic location on a hilltop offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The palace was constructed using local limestone and consisted of various rooms, courtyards, and staircases.
Numerous valuable items were discovered at the site of the Phaistos Palace during archaeological excavations. Among them the most famous is the Phaistos Disc, a unique clay disc with ancient writing known as Linear A script, which hasn’t been deciphered and the meaning and purpose of the Phaistos Disc remain a mystery. Other treasures found include pottery, jewelry, and figurines. Many of these items are now exhibited in the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion.
The site's historical significance and the mysterious Phaistos Disc make it a must-visit for history enthusiasts and anyone interested in ancient civilisations and their cultural achievements. For a complete insight into the Minoan culture, it is best to visit also the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion, because like that you can see the magnificence of the palace and the charming details of excavated items, which complement each other and leave visitors in awe of the admirableness of the Minoan culture.

This four story administrative palace and operations center was literally wiped off the earth in the massive displacement waves of 1177 BCE. The agricultural region surrounding the falsely analyzed archaeological site had been an average of 20 feet thicker. You are looking at a 3100 year old surface layer. Washed into the sea was a million year surface layer. Incontrovertibly proven by every step you take on the island of Crete. The Phaistos Disk takes us to the exact minute.
