they could use UV or some reactive paint/powder that's not visible unless under a certain light frequency so other teams can't see things properly when the car is outside
I was just thinking the same. I wonder if there are rules governing the color.
I think some do/did
Mercedes do exactly this
That's what we use at our (non-automotive) wind tunnel. You can see it without a UV light but only if you are up close, and even then not much detail. Hit it with the UV light and everything shows up. We also don't normally paint it on, but use dots of it, spaced apart in rows in areas of interest. It is really cool to watch and look at, but is very messy, and a pain to clean up.
I was about to write this.
Kind of surprised they haven't developed a UV version where the particles only show under UV light. Would be much harder to "spy on" and not too difficult to take images afer in a closed garage.
Great idea 👏
It's very easy to make a UV camera.. wouldn't stop those pesky photographers.. may even make it easier for them as it would stand out clearer.
They do have that, and if they took the car inside the garage before exposing it to a UV light, it would be harder for spies to see the results. You don't need a UV camera, only a strong UV light. It fluoresces under UV light and you can then photograph or observe it.
wouldnt that be too much effort for something so trivial, like if a team really wanted to spy on you they would so dont put too much effort in hiding stuff when you can just spend that effort in improving the car
The Sun produces UV light, so there might be a way to capture the reflection using an UV camera I assume
A mixture of color pigments in some form of liquid is literally the description of paint. Still very interesting video. Great job, as always.
So I could put some color pigment in water or milk and I made paint?
@@johnnychimpo7539 yeh
@@est495 no
You can put colour pigment in water or milk and using a paintbrush and paper make a watercolor painting... Not sure milk will smell nice a few days after but you'd have the ability to paint
@@johnnychimpo7539 yes
I actually just want to say how much I appreciate this 3 minute video that gets to the point and not dragged out to 11 minutes lol..
you heard it here first folks, as powder mixed with oil is not paint, oil paint is not officially paint
powder mixed with oil is definitively not paint. I completely agree with this assessment.
Isn’t paint just a pigment suspended in a liquid?
@@ALMX5DP yes it is xD
Errr oil paint is just that. Powdered pigment in oil
@@b.fsmashdub4209 I think he was just being sarcastic.
@@b.fsmashdub4209 unless it’s water based paint, then it’s pigment powder in water
I wish we had WTF1 in other languages so more fans could see how amazing all this stuff is.
I agree, but to be fair, I feel like a VAST majority of F1 fans speak english
use subtitles innit
@@JJJackson777 there’s only English captions mate
@@conorhiggins47 - you can volunteer to translate videos and write captions.
Learn the bloody language mate
Thank you for making this video, I was curious what it was and what it was used for but didn’t even know where to start to look for answers.
It would be interesting to compare the cars with flow-vis on them after Bahrain testing to see who got smooth lines and who doesn't
0:50 well normal paint is also some powder mixed with an solvent (in this case oil/paraffin)
im not sitting on a chair rn
im sitting on a structure designed to support my weight constructed out of metal, wood and other materials
A binder or medium, not a solvent. But you've got the idea!
@@8thlvlMage those are solvents..
@@franz0901fw everything is a solvent, but in terms of general usage of the word, its Basically whether its dissolved, or simply suspended in the liquid
Maaaan y’all probably should of done this a week or two ago lol. I had to google it already.
But I love you guys and will still watch of course
I swear, I can set my calendar on the repetitive videos that F1 content creators release around the season haha.
You don't get real dirty air or vortices from natural crosswinds in a wind tunnel. Flow-vis and things like yarn taped to bodywork are ultimately helpful on track because of those reasons and more.
Very cool I did not know this... thanks 4 sharing
This was very informative
I don't know what I expect to learn from this video. I have watched testing for years, and every year I click on the "What's that weird paint and stuff they put on the cars" video expecting to find something new.
Tq for this so long I have this doubt
Paint is also the name of the programm some teams use to design their liverys
I've always wanted to know this
Not alone
finally I found a video explaining about the green paint
It would also be great to know what those mesh things they sometimes run around with are supposed to achieve :-)
The Rake: An array of pitot tubes, measuring air pressure at points around the car.
I'm just enjoying most of the comments being correct objections to the idea of powder suspended in a fluid not being considered paint.
Paraffin - just had my histology & pathology test 2 hours ago, almost confused it with Formalin from dissection. lol
Can you do a video on those big frame/sensor thingys they attach to their cars, what they do and how they work? Please and thank you :)

@@Flashbang_Photo Thanks!
Why wouldn't they use some kind of uv florescent paint? Then only the team could look at it when they want to as it would be invisible without the uv light.
Was going to say the same thing. I assume it would mess with the viscosity or something though
Looks nice, I will try it on my Motormobil
Do the teams make it a priority to study how dirty air affects the performance by having the teammate run the other car directly in front of them?
I think they were only allowed to run one car for each team. They could definitely follow another team to do the same thing though.
what car do you think is going to be quickest in the 2022 season? And what driver do you think is going to win?
Ohhhhh thanks I was wondering about that
No matter what, that was an oil pain though, since it covers the surface and mixed with pigment, too.
Why don't they use a powder only visible under a black light or something to keep it hidden?
2:35
“I hate to break it to you, but it’s not actually paint”
Proceeds to describe it as oil-based paint.
0:48 you... Just described what oil paint is haha
Almost one mil subs
The cars that have that "paint" look better than the main livery itself in my opinion almost every time
I'd love to get some and slap it on my own car to see how the airflow works
Next level of tape
paraffin is synthetic wax often used for cheap candles, i’m sure they add something else to prevent it from immediately hardening like candle wax
It's also a refined oil to fuel homes
Nascar was doing it in 70s with baby powder. They thought Harry Hyde was nuts. But he was looking for where the air ended up in the car since they had open windows at the time. -U10
Can you now explain what AERO RAKES are, what the differences between their shapes, and how the device measures or senses air flow? Are there sensors at the intersections in the tool, etc?
Thank You All!!!
I wonder if they tried to make some substance to spray on the car and that substance to be seen only under UV lights.
Rival teams could not see the flow of the air on the car with that substance and the teams can easily pull the car in the pit garage and just turn on UV lights
Idk...just a thought
Are cars allowed to go on private tracks during development or strictly during those F1 testing days / sessions / whatever they call it now
Paraffin is actually a solvent so it's basically solvent based paint. Just like the ink in a pen
It’s not paint it’s powder. But also, they PAINT it on and it DRIES UP. It’s still not paint though….
yeah it's just a pigment suspended in some solution that will dry up some time after application.
totally not paint though
powder mixed with oil is definitely not paint .Agreed
I've been watching F1 for a long time but I've apparently not been paying attention because I've never heard of this.
I still think we would have a mad first race, if we just bind off testing, and just went in blind
Lol would be a disaster
@@riankhan1424 not really
This like the modern solution to tape and yarn
I wonder why the teams don't use UV sensitive dyes instead of the fluorescent and bright colors, to prevent or at least minimize spying?
I could be wrong, but it seems like if one team designed a car to perform the best in dirty air vs clean air, they would have an advantage, since almost all cars, including the lead car lapping cars are almost always in dirty air and not clean air.
I love the paint
Imagine they start doing this with paint that can be seen with UV light :D
Now i know why brawn gp car looked like that..
i dont know for sure but i would bet that they put something radio active in the paint so they can scan it and look at on a digital map of sorts.
Wtf bro
I've always wondered how hard is it to get off? Mr. Sparkle is missing out on a huge car wash marketing opportunity here
And how about the big teams that have private test tracks next to their headquarters? In theory they can build and test as much as possible. How is FIA regulating and and keeping an eye on the big teams?
If they would be caught the would be fined. Severly probably even DQ
I dont think anybody risks that.
Bro that's the definition of paint. Lol
I can't believe they didn't see the porpoising in the wind tunnel.
See you all at the test livestreams
Do they not run test runs privately! before the re season testing? That way they could keep their data safe
achkthualy i agree, in any way, shape or form, it is paint. What you do with it does not influence what it is
Wasn't it Jeremy Clarkson who came up with this on top gear for the art exhibition episode when he used the red bull?
I believe it's technical term is "schmoo"
Question: So it is in regulations that the F1 cars cannot be tested privately? I mean there must be tracks they can run as much tests as they want in private.
Thanks for explaining it to everyone. I already knew this.
had to do a triple take at 0:20 lmao
Why dont they use a UV flourescent pigment? Other teams wouldnt be able to see it and they can use a black light when its in the garage
Maybe use fluorescent paint and uv light in the garage, that’s how you hide secrets
They could use an invisible colour, that can only be seen with a specific light.
yes
Love your vids
How do teams clean the paint?
Really ?
Every team has their own protocol.
Mercedes used to have Bottas lick the paint off of Lewis’ car.
Daniil Kvyat is Max’s paint licker.
Most other teams just use Yuki Tsunoda as a designated licker.
It looks better than Alpine's pink BWT livery
I never understood why teams don't use a substance that is only visible under black light or something. That way they can keep the flow patterns secret and analyse them back in the garage.
Teams should use 'invisible ink' instead that is only seen under UV - that way the photographers can't catch the spray pattern until you take it back into a UV room. Just saying.
This idea was conjured up at skunk works for airplanes before there were computer simulations. They just used a rainbow of colors and put the model in a wind mill to see how the paint moved around. It would be simpler to just use Florescent white on white or fluorescent green on green where only black light would show the final result. Someone hire me as an engineer please. I have ideas that will spark ideas for more ideas… I have ideas to make maximum downforce while minimizing vehicle weight under load.
How have they not invented a paint that can only show up under UV light then the other teams won't see it.
So this is basically another version of the old "Taped Thread" trick?
Thanks for telling
I wonder how much they would to pay someone to discover invincible ink to use as flow-vis
I've always wondered why teams use a visible 'paint' rather than an UV or IR invisible 'paint' so they can see it but others can't.
If they are so worried about others seeing it. Just make it visible only with a black light
im new to f1, why dont they just test the car on track at training facilitys / if theyre not allowed how do the fia monitor it to ensure they dont
It's a powder that's mixed with an oily substance.
So, paint then.
Why don't the teams use a UV component?
Budget restriction is clearly the reason why we dont see much innovation on this part (why no newer and cooler tech exists for this like UV). Why would teams spend money on this rather than improve their aero with that money?!
For aero
is there a rule that says it has to be the color it is? cant the teams make up some invisible solution that shows in a blacklight? then no other teams could see the results of the test while they come down the pit straight
You probably can't do that with the same material, it has to be that specific material for it to work as intended
Right, there are "new" fans.
I’m confused as to what WTF1 thinks paint is, if not powder mixed with oil …
That why willlams use new green paint in f1
Why can't teams use a powder that only shows up under UV?
Powder plus oil is oil paint. That’s paint, mate!
FINALLY SOMEONE speaks ab it
Why don't they use some sort of paint that is only visible under UV light just like what they did on top Gear with David Coulthard
the first time i saw it was while i was watching the singapore gp and i thought it was mclarens new paint job
Pigment and an oil literaly Flo-vis qualifies as paint exactly as per paints dictionary definition
No Mickey No!
It's not a paint, it's a pigment mixed with a binder applied on a surface...
looks like they ran over an alien...
