THANKS for all you do. You are a legend. Your website and CZcams channel helped me immensely
🙏
Thank you sir for being there, I was kinda confused, your videos helped me a lot.
I’ve been looking for a comprehensive comparison for these. Thanks for taking the time. It will be interesting to see how Highway Radar compares when it comes out of Beta.
It’s my understanding that some agencies publish the locations of their mobile photo radar units. If that’s the case, it would be cool if one could upload local locations with effective dates to the app.
Great and totally agree. I have both apps and do prefer R8 companion the background and Waze on top. I am also testing HR IOS, was one of the earliest to get it, and its come along way also.
Awesome content ! As usual!
It would be cool to see the companion apps be able to automatically change RD settings based on gps by state, so when I travel I can have the most optimized settings when taking long road trips. They can use general presets based on what the general consensus is by state or enable users to tune them themselves as an option, but having that feature would make me feel more comfortable and some settings where I primarily drive might not be representative 2-3 states over.
I currently have an r8 w the companion app and I think it would make it very potent if it had this added functionality
I believe JBV1 has this capability
@@gaberamirez4933that’s cool if it does, I don’t own an android to take advantage of that app unfortunately. That app does have a lot of amazing features tho
@@gaberamirez4933I believe it does, also.
(I run it, but haven't used that feature yet, as I no longer travel like I was when I got it)
They need to add an option in the apps to share our mute data with them and they can release a setting that mutes the top most common muted freqs
Can you please put out a video on the power supply cords, distance from “cigarette lighter” needed, laws for placement, and cord dangling issues we all face? I really think the power supply technology is from 2002 with these things… but I love/need them. Thanks!
*I wish there was an easy way to export my V1Driver data into V1 Companion. I'd like to try companion out but I have so much data logged over the years in V1Driver I feel locked in.*
Off topic from the video, but what’s your opinion on the Escort M2 dash cam? I’m looking at getting it since I wouldn’t have to run a second hardwire cable and it can just piggy back off my R8 hardwire cable.
Thank you for doing God's work.
Local follower here Puyallup!
what settings to use for the V1 driver on the Uniden R8
Are you still testing the the new cobra radar
I see your version of V! Driver is 3.0.5.580, mine is 3.0.5.569 why is that and how can iI upgrade? I don't have a few features you mention here like the Network Alert Settings. Thanks!!
Two buttons on both apps are missing. One that tells waze there is a cop and second one that tells there is a accidental vehicle. That would make both apps better
Any plans for these manufactures covering speed cameras. I live in N.Y. Lots of info on speed cams zones going in lately.
V1Driver has that. Have you also played with the GPS speed cam alerts in Waze, Google Maps, and radar detectors?
I'll purchase the V1 Driver to fine tune a bit. I use waze too TY
Do they both stream audible alerts to the phone?
Is it possible to download a full log of the r8 companion or v1 to see how fast you were going during a recent trip where there was a Ka band?
R8 Companion has a log of all your encounters including speed. You currently can't download the file, but you could screen capture the log at the point you were curious about.
I asked about radar companion vs highway radar.
Can you please tell me why my R8 wouldn't alert me on a STRONG K band alert ? It was showing on the radar but didn't audio alert. It was at a funeral, county sheriff radaring. Have your settings with R8 companion and it set to highway. Wasn't speeding but definitely wouldn't have alerted me should it be in a different scenario
No real way for me to tell. Could be low speed muting, a signal behind if you have rear muting enabled, etc.
@@VortexRadar it was alerting on the sheriff sitting at the funeral. I've been thru there many times with no alerts. I have the low speed muting off. It's a small county road with absolutely nothing close to it in terms of a power sliding door or something of that nature.
My major metro runs a lot of helicopters along with planes on our interstate outside the metro when traveling outside the metro or to another State; that alone is a great reason, but the map that has crowd sourced including on the map (as well as hotspots for areas I don't travel frequently) and just overall UX/GUI... Highway Radar all day
Yeah HR is currently only for Android, but there's an iOS option in the works for us iPhone users too and I'm looking forward to that finally coming out for everyone. :)
listening to this in 1.25x playback speed 😅😅
Ik this is a comparison between the two apps for uniden/v1/etc. but JBV1 FTW!!❤
haha if only Johnboy was interested in supporting detectors besides just the V1... :)
@@VortexRadarif only MJ would come play for my high school's JV team, amirite?
I use Android so I started with JBV1 and have been trialling Highway Radar for a bit. Thinking of moving to Highway Radar permanently since it's very unlikely I ever get a V1 (I don't own any detectors these apps talk to yet, just older Uniden and Escort models) so I'm more likely to end up with a detector that works with Highway Radar. Both are great apps!
@@VortexRadarDoes he not? I bought an R9 and I was counting on JBV1 to be my companion app. Will I need to go with HR?
I bought a cheap android phone just to run JBV1.
I know ALP w/net radar is an older setup, but is there a 3rd party app that works with that setup?
Unfortunately not
Whenever I use the R8 Companion it turns on the speed limit warning and beeps incessantly when I go over 60 mph until I turn it off, which is weird because when I don't use the app it doesn't turn it on. Some kind of bug, I think.
Have you reported it to the developer? He is very responsive in acknowledging bugs like this, and quickly rolls the fixes into the next release.
Hi @TheEcletic - This is simply a setting in the "audio" settings of the app. Go into the audio settings and set the speed to something other than 60 and/or turn it on and off as desired.
@@RadarCompanion Hi thanks for responding. I have done this and it works for the duration of the drive, but when I start another drive I have to go back into the settings and turn it off again. I figured it would save it once I'd configured it or use whatever settings I had already programmed into the R8 before connecting.
@@TheEclectic - Thanks for your patience on working through this. You are correct, it should be saving and persisting from drive to drive. Please let me know what steps you are taking, so I can see if I can reproduce your issue. For example, go into the audio settings in the app, turn off the speed limit warning and go back to the main alert screen to save the settings. Next, using the detector buttons, go into the detector settings and verify the limit speed has been in fact turned off. Turn off the detector (to simulate ending the current drive) and turn it back on and connect to the app. Now go into the audio settings in the app and verify the speed limit warning is still turned off. Let me know what happens at each step, to see if we can narrow your issue down. Thanks!
I wish the V1 Companion would auto learn lidar. I have several places on my daily commute that sets off lidar detection. The V1 Driver auto mutes these.
While it’s not automatic, if you set SpotLocks for those locations it will mute them in the future. Just tap the LOCK symbol when the alert pops up, and a SpotLock will be set and remembered based on GPS location.
Can you connect to radar and a motorbike coms unit at the same time?
Yes, your phone can connect multiple Bluetooth devices simultaneously. What you’re describing is how this stuff is designed to be used.
@@VortexRadar ok cheers. Asking for a reply to another commenter asking if can connect to radar and bike comms together as he’d just tried the earphone jack to comms and failed
The bike cops have laser, right? Any info on the laser blockers ?
Yeah... get the ALPS.
Will these apps help make a original v1 better?
Absolutely! V1 Companion's systems are tuned for each platform. It works great at taming the original V1's lack of advanced false filtering.
Will the app show on CarPlay?
Nope
I must be missing something because I don’t have Network Alert Settings

@@VortexRadar🤦🏻♂️
I'm all in once Radar Companion works with Apple CarPlay.
Apple is very restrictive with that and it doesn’t look like there’s plans for that. You can already use CarPlay for Waze and then have Radar Companion output audio through your car stereo if you like.
It’s hard to justify $12 for V1driver when JBV1 is free and can use it with a hotspoted android device.
But, conversely, if you are an iPhone owner it’s hard to justify spending hundreds of dollars on an Android phone just to use the free JBV1 app.
@@RbNetEngr you don’t have to. You can buy cheap android phones for under $50 or get one from a friend that has one to get rid of for free. I have an iPhone but also a bunch of android phones and a couple android tablets in fact you can get a cheap android tablet split screen it with JBV1 and Highway radar as well as run weather apps. Freeing up your phone for ALP and Waze for navigation.
You can, yes, but in practice running a second phone can be a PITA. For that reason I never do it as a daily and I only do that when taking the time to set up for a road trip or something.
