Saved from the SCRAP! 1970 Pontiac Lemans Sport Sedan with a STUCK engine! Will It Run?!?

- čas přidán 21. 08. 2024
- A friend of mine who scraps old cars said he found a fairly complete old Pontiac with a stuck engine and let me know it was available for purchase before he sent it to the crusher. This Pontiac turned out to be a 1970 Lemans Sport 4 door hardtop with a 350 engine and TH350 transmission. Of course we couldn't pass it up! Let's see if we can get the old Poncho to live once again! This car has been SOLD to another faithful viewer!!! As always, thanks for watching!

im getting kinda tired of watching you wrench on piles of shit and then to only attempt to sell at a much higher price than you bought it... when you actually restore something its good but not spending money to flip its bad...
How do you know what a I paid for it? I think the asking price is quite fair. So all the time we put into that engine to get it running and driving doesn't improve value since I didn't spend any money doing it?
Yikes... who pissed in your cornflakes?
Don't watch
Plenty of others to watch no one is making you...
if you dont like it ,,dont you dont have to watch,,or are you a KAREN,,
Thanks for putting the effort into a car that frankly didn't deserve it, I for one recognize and appreciate the effort you put into each revival. Another classic saved! And please continue to ignore the dorks who think you should be doing something else or even doing what you do a different way. Keep doing what you do.
Much appreciated Joseph
Where do I start, oups, pardon the pun.
Color me stupid, but I for one enjoy watching someone else doing what I used to do. I'm not as critical as I used to be.(time wounds all heels)
Keep up the good work as even the things that may be redundant to some, tend to jog an antique memory.
So, if you don't like what you see, it's simple CHANGE IT!
This is the only reason why I don’t completely hate Mondays.
I agree 💯
I used to feel that way about Mondays, when I retired every day after feels like a Saturday.
Don't forget Puddins Fab Shop.
Agreed
Mortske in the morning and Puddins fab shop in the evening makes me a happy man.
Love when you get a stuck engine unstuck and running half way decent. What once was destined for demolition is now a great project and a good cruiser for someone. Very happy seeing the ol' classics back on the road having a second chance at life. Kudos to you Mortske and keep on keeping on!!!
Man this is one of the more impressive revivals you’ve had. The fact that it’s nothing special and you still went through all the effort and were successful! Crazy man. Love it, have been a fan for a long time and this video is another prime example why I will continue to be. Kudos man. Keep on keepin on
Exactly - Mortske just keeps on trucking when others would have sent it to the crusher.
I actually like the obscure revival projects. Most just only try to save the 2-doors
That is the beauty of his show.. other shows have too much the same acting and it gets boring fast. I know when I click on this show what I'm going to get. Bringing this car back to life from being crushed. Ultimately I know more life. Got her running. It's just awesome. Having the patience going the distance.
He has upgraded to a much needed much appreciated shop,, you can see his happiness. The shop that's not full of shiny collector cars piled up on top of each other.. sitting there like trophies.
Yes I'd really like to know about that 63 Impala.
I cant believe we use to cruise in these long forgotten cars, and to see them again, brings back youth and many other things.
@@nickenglezos687 I remember being in a brand new 64 Chevy Impala when I was very young.
love how Duff has to give it a good check over before it comes into the shop. Good shop dog
Your tenacity never fails to impress, Great video Mortske , and that starter was absolutely incredible
He was due a good starter after a long history of terrible ones.
Mortske Pontiac used a general purpose block. You are correct it was the same block on all v8 engines. You could use 455 heads on a 350 , but you had to use the 455 intake. If I remember correctly.
Monday's with Mortske. Pontiac engines are very reliable. If one thing I have learned from this channel is if something sits outside without being turned over in years it will size up from condensation. I was thinking this was a sure boat anchor but nope the LeMans proved to be still useable.
There is no quit in you Mr. M
Your videos like this are my favorite. Thanks kid 🤞
Thanks John!
You stick with it longer than anyone else would do but that's why we watch! That Craigslist rebuild on that motor held up well! I hope you are sponsored by Doosan for as much advertising that you do for them!
My favorite part of this video had nothing to do with the car. It was when Duff came running over and pushed his head under your arm. He loves you, man!
Sure does
I like these longer videos, very entertaining to watch. This one wanted to live again for sure. The price is right and I'm sure it will find a new home soon. Thanks for making my Monday mornings something to look forward to.
Don't let that fella over at Pole Barn Garage see this gem, he loves Pontiac's, especially crusty, holey Pontiac's!
I love how Duff knows when it's Doughnut time and gets ready such a smart pup 👍
I was so happy to hear that Old PONCHO ROAR TO LIFE 👍👍👍👍
4-door hardtops are cool and rare. Good to see stuff like this.
Got to say, this is possibly the most impressive revival I've seen on your channel so far, didn't think it would ever start, well done! :One thing I'd love to see are compressions readings after you driven it for a while. I bet they came right up! :)
Stay tuned
I have certainly stumbled on a great bunch of guys, you - Wes and Peg keep me sane.
Awesome!
@@MortskeRepair You don't realise how relaxing these videos are - here the in UK cars are under attack and you just can't haul an old wreck out of a bush and fix it up since the weather rots old cars to nothing unless they are well stored. New cars are without soul and all made of plastic so to see these old cars being saved is fascinating and fulfilling. Don't stop being you dude.
My very first vehicle was a 1972 That color Banana yellow with a white vinyl top great memories and another great video keep it up love the weekly times with you and Duff
You're the best Mortske.. That damn key on the harmonic balancer is such a pain the butt, it's almost like GM was trying to make it difficult to unstick a rusted engine, like they did that on purpose or something!
Another valiant effort ending in success! She sure put up a fight though, man! Can't believe how well it actually runs. Thanks for making my Monday morning. Happy Halloween!!
Our pleasure John!
What a rig ! Glad you stuck with it. I was pretty happy when she finally fired up ! The real hero is that starter, though !
I concur!
Mortske Repair friend , bless that starter as well for hanging in to spin that Pontiac 350 V8 engine to life 💪💪😀😀🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 👍👍👍👍
Exactly. The real chsmp
I really like these shows,, especially this one.. he doesn't have to go to the mileage, so he put on a show for us,, and has fun doing it.. this man has a beautiful nature.. I really like his demeanor. he puts on a good show he makes me laugh who tells you what he shouldn't do and what he does to what will work and what won't work. this is the magic of this show and how he performs it,
cheers Mortskie.
PBG is a lot of fun. You should give more recomendations to channels. the last two have been really solid. Also $500 for that thing is like $200 over scrap prices for a running driving car. That is damn reasonable. I would love to watch someone pick one of these treasures up from you and drive it across country to see how far it goes.
That car qualifies for 24 hours of Lemons racing at that price, and would be an excellent candidate
Very cool to see you get that car running again and what had to
be done to make it go down the road. To the one guy Joseph who
was critical of you reselling those cars, sometimes it's not about
the money, it's about the challenge of making it run again and saving
it from the compactor. I learned a lot watching you work on these
various cars and trucks and appreciate the sharing of the knowledge.
Your channel is not restoration but provides more of a look at the
mechanics of things. When you are done, yeah maybe there is someone
to take it to another level and yeah maybe you break even or make a
buck or two on something.... so what! People got to live and pay their
bills. Cheers to you brother man! 🍻 -Al Cox
Keeping in mind it's 52 years old, better frame then expected, yes it needs an incredible amount of work, but it's a runner. A classic. A Pontiac. Shout out from CT here.
I subscribed when you were at 23k subs. Since then, you, Duff and Puddin’ have shown me that it could be worse and not have thumbs or worse, I’d have to rebuild a starter so get out and get it done!
It’s my bday today and I saved the last thing for today… I have to do is adjust the linkage for trans.
1995 K2500 extended cab long bed with 4” lift. Rust and dent free I got for $200 on marketplace 3 years ago. It didn’t have the drivetrain or axles OR wiring!
Now she all the basics and I dropped a TBI350 in her with 43k miles and that freshly built 4l80.
After your video, ITS FINALLY HAPPENING!
Thank you Mortske! LETS GOOOOOO😁😁😁
Happy birthday!
Great Job man, starting a stuck-up engine is the hallmark of your expertise...super and sounds good too.
Thanks 👍
Thanks for saving the shop! Got my Super Scraper from Mortske today, two day turn around; and stickers! Thanks guy!
Thanks for your purchase!
That Poncho took you all the way to the wall. The compression figures we're so low, I really did'nt think it would run. Well done Mortske !
Thanks Jerome!
I'm glad you were able to get it unstuck and then running! Once you got to the 3/4 drive socket I was beginning to lose hope. I appreciate the autopsy on the ones that don't run but these are the best.
Thanks for watching and commenting
Great saved car and great content👌😎
Great start off the week, Happy Halloween🎃👏
Once again...enginuity, experience, and effort pays off! Lost some time, gained some knowledge, had a bunch of fun, pissed of a couple haters...that's a win all day. Even if it doesn't sell....it's a pile of good GM parts to throw in the stash for future projects. Stuff like this just sharpens your skills, it's basically stress free, and full of comic relief. I've spent a lot of time laughing at myself and my buddies in back yard shops doing stuff just like this. Good times!
Right on
That starter deserves to have a spot in a Mortske repair trophy case, What a champ! Did it spin both the shitdiggers on the asphalt? what a gem!
Way to stay committed! Most guys would have given up just based on the compression readings. Not to mention the timing and plug wiring debacle. I couldn't believe the starter didn't burst into flames. And then the tiny fireball! Duff must be tired from hunting. But he still knew enough to get his head inside the window as you crossed the railroad crossing, so he didn't get a headache. As always grateful for all your hard work and time. Keep it up!!
Thanks Gary!
Most people hear that "the engine is stuck" and some will at least confirm it's stuck and then move on. In the common wrenching vernacular, a stuck engine is a dead engine meaning it is in the grave for all intents and purposes.
These to me are my favorite kind of videos. In depth examination of engines that everyone else would write off as dead or a waste of time. Determination wins in the end! Great stuff as always.
Thanks much!
And that's what makes this show.. I click on this show before others..
Awe man I love watching the mouse house come flying out the exhaust!
I bought a 71 in 77. It was a two door. Only year they called it a T37. I think it was a slightly upgraded trim level on the Tempest. Same engine and tranny as the one you have in the 70. It was a strong runner.
On the Pontiac V8's, they were all big blocks. The only small block was the inline six. Some had an overhead cam with a four barrel carb, they ran strong too.
The only weak spot on them was the fiber toothed cam shaft sprocket. Designed to be quieter than steel. Lasted around 75k miles. Run great, then one time you shut it off it won't start.
love watching the content I'm a female and never been showed how to work on vehicles and am trying to learn I hope it's not to late I'm not getting any younger lol happy Halloween have a great week...
Same to you!
Yet another amazing will it run show... Thanks much Mortske! Best content on YT!
Thanks for watching!
In the early 80's I had a total of 14 LeMans. Oldest was 68, newest was 72. Loved them but bought them to flip. Had access to a pipe bender so I kept it simple. Dual exhaust, hush thrush mufflers, and whatever mags I could round up at the local yards. Bolt on HP and curb appeal. Detail with a wax and down the road they went. Here's what I learned about Pontiac cars of that vintage. At 40k miles they wanted a new timing gear set. At 60k miles they wanted outer carrier bearings on the rear. Otherwise if they were properly maintained they were a 200k mile vehicle without anything major. From the wheel swaps over the years I'm guessing (estimate) I have about 60-80 assorted PMD mags. I only kept the complete ones. Rings and such. Had one that had been wrecked before it got it. Whoever did the front clip put the letters in the grill wrong. So that one was a Ponitac lol. I left it for someone else to discover. Good stuff today. I thought this one was a boat anchor in a tin box but you got it to run and drive.
Holy buckets!
Love it, they mad pretty good power, they quite figured if they wanted to be a hot rod or a boat ...but they looked great all cleaned up before headed to Saturday Nite bingo. 👍👍
I'd like to see an updated compression test! See if the trouble cylinders came around.
STay tuned!
@@MortskeRepair see if those rings got a little loose after all that heat and jangling around!
was surprising how well it ran, would have been interesting to do another compression test after the BURNOUT RECONDITIONING TECHNIQUE. Pole Barn Garage does some good paint work and rust repairs also on the 1959 Tank Fairlane with the re ring of the seized FE engine being pretty cool too.
Remeber, you do this for fun. My dad and I are shacking our heads and loughing with you and Duff
I can't believe that thing ran as well as it did with those issues. Simplicity really is king for bringing old junk back to life.
Sure is
I'm impressed with your persistence! If I lived closer I would be happy to pay $500 for that car! Thanks for sharing, You and Duff have a Safe Halloween! 🎃
Same to you Kimberly
You can look on the tail lights. They used to put the model year on the tail lights.
No taillights in this car
@@MortskeRepair 1970 thru 1972 taillights are interchangeable on the tempest lemans and gto so looking at the tai light production year is not always a tell all.
the cowl tag located on the driver's side upper firewall will net you better information.
Dad was a hardcore Pontiac guy he got me into them almost 40yrs ago. first thing he made me do was learn the firing order 18436572.
Dad took his final ride 25 years ago this year when he burned rubber out of this life, he left me with and awesome set of tools and Pontiac books as well a lifetime of knowledge and memories of working on Pontiacs together.
there will always be jealous haters out there pay them no attention as that's exactly what they are seeking is attention. lots of us love your channel and what you are doing so just keep doing what it is that you do.
good luck God bless and keep on twisting those wrenches.
Bob Miller.
Uncle Mortske playing with electricity and teaching kids what a roach clip is! I laughed my butt off when "Down Goes Mortske!" Love the show man....
Haha thanks Isaac
Speaking from experience, those Pontiac engines have a couple of odd quirks, one of which is the damned nylon timing gear that loves to spit off a couple of teeth and cause the timing to jump. I don't know if that is what caused this to become a 'no start' back in the day but I wouldn't bet against it, the failure usually happened at engine shut off. Ran good until parked and refused to start again. Good job on waking this one up!
You can tell that it's a Pontiac buy the way that it is.
How Neat Is That! 😆
@@glennnickerson8325 👍
Mortske, thank you for being “that other channel “! Your persistence has paid off, the Lemon lives! She’s a runner and Lord Duff seem to like the ride too! Thanks for the great content!
Our pleasure Thomas!
I'm on annual leave this week and almost forgot it was Mortske Monday! Don't think I've ever been this early to a video 👌
Those kids are super cute, probably not much help around the shop but can still make you smile!😊
So true!
Best thing I found for antifreeze on concrete is simple plain water and a mop picks it up and usually no stain
My father had a 69 Tempest with a 6 banger. Looked very similar. He had it less than 6 months and traded it in for a 69 Catalina,V8 400 cid. Much more car, much more power! Video made me get nostalgic. Dad was a die hard Pontiac man. Thanks for sharing. And by the way, he also had a 66 Tempest with 326. 😎👍
AWesome!
Mortske Repair Friend Hello I'm rooting for you to getting this Pontiac running ,since the Chevrolet in your other video you didn't get running, but you went through the trouble of tearing that engine down to show us why it didn't run ,I have a alot of respect for you and I love the dog Duff as well 😃😃🇺🇸🇺🇸👍👍👍💪💪💪
Thanks Eric!
Poncho back from the grave! I didn't give her much of a chance of being resuscitated... Mortske magic once again. A LOT of work, but she seems to run pretty well. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching Robert
Brilliant as always Mr Mortske! Maximum respect to you for efforts to deliver is free content weekly.
It is appreciated.
Thanks Liam!
Thank you for reminding me of my lemans.nothing beats a pontiac in my book.there not many left to see.they use to be around in the 80s, what ever v8 they came with, had power. all big block burn rubber cars.it would make a cool pimp sleeper.keep them pontiacs coming they steel the show..
Nice job getting her running. Hope you fix it up. I’ve got a 71 GTO and just love the Pontiac 68-72 A bodies. As rough as it is, that cars still pretty solid. I know it’s a 4 door, but there ain’t many left. She deserves to be saved.
Good Morning Mr Mortske and Duff from Alabama
Your Hard Work Counts, This is a Compliment, My Polish Step Father used to say it when you did a good days of work, "You earned your tomato today!"....... Again Thanks!.....
Thanks Rickard!
snatched victory from the hands of defeat after all the struggle hands down funniest episode yet and you didnt even loose a finger lol.
My favorite CZcamsr..! Always look forward to watching all your videos. That LeMans is good enough for the girls I go out with here in California. Cheers🍻
You telling that kid to hook up the roach clip!! 🤣🤣🤣 priceless!!! Love me some mortske!!!
It never ceases to amaze me how these old v8s and inline 6s even when stuck once un stuck the run and run well
Sister had a '72 creampuff LeMans- 350 two-barrel, would cruise at 90 without even breathing hard. You had to keep an eye on the speedo. Long gone.
Sweet!
Hey Mortske: Its amazing to see you working on a Pontiac sedan like the one that I had grown up with.... We had a '69 Custom S that was a pain in the ass to keep running... You did a top notch job getting it back to life and Duff really enjoyed it as well... A case of sammitches is in store for you for to keep bringing it back to life!!! The Custom S had a 326 engine that was a definite kick in the pants to keep it on the road.... From the home of PB Blaster Silicone spray.... Cleveland, Ohio....
I do have to say this one here totally blew my mind that engine was totally locked up on two cylinders and to see you tear it down free up those two cylinders reuse head gaskets and see that car run as good as it does is just totally mind-boggling!!!!!
Thanks much!
Best way to start the week... Mortske Repair Monday
Yes, I haven't seen a LeMans in like a decade. Never watched anyone repair them though. Your awesome for finding this one Morty👍!
Thanks Jeff
Very cool. From stuck to blown donuts and burning rubber. And no broken valves. That’s neat. Lol.
" The concrete broke my fall " dude !!!! Stop trying to wreck the new shop. Really dig your content. Keep up the great work
Thanks Phil!
I'm Impressivd. That Plymouth motor had so many problems. You fixed a lot of screw-ups the last guy left behind. Thanks for the great content.
After watching your dedication (read: Struggles) to getting this thing to kick over, no wonder is was headed for scrap.
Hearing this thing run is MOST TRIUMPHANT!
Sure was
Great job! I’ve actually done a in car rebuild like this in a 4 cylinder after the piston skirt freed itself. New piston and rod, honed cylinders and It ran for many more years and miles after until the transmission locked up, wish I still had the 40 mpg beast. Never give up! Never surrender!
Nice!
As you probably read already, you make Mondays suck less. Thanks Mort and Duff!
Thanks!
You had me going there for awhile, I thought you were going to bale after shearing the key on the balancer. You forged ahead and bam! shades of Y blocks past a beautiful fireball from a crankcase full of fuel. Can't believe the starter hung in there with double the voltage and enough smoke boiling out of it looking like a steam locomotive. Happy Halloween!
Even though the Pontiac is a pain in the butt I'm happy you got one on the channel!!!!!!! Can't wait for the next one
Thanks it's fun to watch those old engines come to life.
Thanks for watching Clifford!
Success , There is nothing like it. It feels good, and when it runs good , what can you say about that. No Mortske's or Duff dogs were hurt in the making of this video. Yeehaw!!!!!Stu from Canada........
yeah' thx mortske for the video, now that lost a leg and am stuck in a wheelchair i vicariously live my life through video's just like this.
Lol that was pretty funny when you said,"lets see what this poncho can do,and duff almost threw up with that sound and you were like "Ya" 😆 🤣
Stumbled onto this channel, I like the dry humor.
Welcome aboard!
MVP goes to that starter...well done sir.
Right on!
Your never say die attitude is an inspiration.
EPIC video!
Perseverance by the pallet-load.
Dr. Watson could not have written a better Sherlock Holmes detective story.
Mortske is the engineer you want in the top turret when the landing gear is shot up, you can't get the gunner out of the ball, you're on one engine, fuel lights in the red...yet he comes through; cranks down the gear, frees up the turret ring jam, releases the gunner and just says, ready to land!
Lord Duff and Duke Mortske may skip interrogation and go immediately to triple combat rations.
Well done!
Heck yeah
May dad claimed that these are great derby cars!! The grill built into the bumper was like a battering ram plus it protected the radiator! They were Usually the last one’s still running.
Nah, the 74-76 fullsize Buicks were good, they'd destroy this mid-size.
I love seeing the old Ponchos! I have a 70 Tempest that I'll be starting on this winter (hopefully)!
cool!
Pontiac is my favorite Car I had a 1973 lemans as a Kid. Great Video Mortske I love watching videos like this one. Good Job with the troubleshooting. Keep It Up! Mortske
had one just like it but was a 2 door, same engine transmission. had 350 badge behind front wheel. red with reverse cragar keystone mags, chrome side mirrors. stood out, got alot of compliments, fun to drive handled well.
Cool
Bud, the fact that you showed that personal folding four times in replay is hilarious. I've been there many times unfortunately...🤣🤣🤣
An old Pontiac? I'm in! Great stuff Mortske!
The level of commitment is strong with this one. Great job boys👍
I didn't know the le man's came with a hit and miss engine. Great video as always mortske
Brilliant !!
That smile tho 😊 priceless !
Thanks Mortske
✌️
Mom's sister had one of these, I remember it was a Lemans and had 350 behind each front wheel. Every family has a driver like her one of her other sisters always said she only knew fast and faster she never wrecked one though, she's 86 you'd think she would have slowed down but nope still zooms down the hwy.
Awesome!
