The Secret Land is a 1948 American documentary about an American expedition code-named "Operation High Jump" to explore Antarctica. It won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
The movie was entirely by military cameramen. The expedition was under the overall command of Admiral Richard E. Byrd, no stranger to the Antarctic. This was a large undertaking involving 13 ships and over 4000 thousand men. The fleet departed from Norfolk, Virginia traveling through the Panama canal and then southward to their final destination. The trip through the ice pack was fraught with danger and forced the submarine that was part of the fleet to withdraw. The trip was a success meeting all of its scientific goals. The film is narrated by three Hollywood stars, all of whom served in the US Navy: Robert Taylor, Robert Montgomery and Van Heflin.
In 1946, the U.S. Navy launches "Operation Highjump" to explore and map the Antarctic region and, in the process, test men, ships and equipment against the harsh climate. Chester W. Nimitz, Chief of Naval Operations, directs the expedition. Three groups make up the expedition: The central land-plane group, headed by Rear-Admiral Richard E. Byrd, will explore and map the interior from a base in Little America, while two other groups will explore and map the eastern and western coasts. The teams must finish their work before the end of the brief Antarctic summer. In addition to scientific equipment and other supplies, the ships carry sled dogs to provide land transportation. At the equator, men and dogs who have never crossed the equator are initiated in humorous King Neptune ceremonies.
When strong storms hit the ships in the southern hemisphere, many sailors are injured and several seaplanes are lost. The rough seas prevent the central group from landing at Scott Island, but despite this setback, the men onboard celebrate Christmas with a traditional dinner and gifts. The central group now depends on an icebreaker to cut a path through the ice pack in the Ross Sea to the Bay of Whales and the base at Little America on the Ross Ice Shelf. Meanwhile, the western group has reached Peter Island. From there, seaplanes scout the coast, where they find explorer Robert Scott's former camp. The progress of the central group is hampered by ice, and the submarine accompanying the ships is caught between two ice flows. The icebreaker returns to free the submarine, which is sent home.
While the western group waits for the icebreaker's return, they observe and capture for further study penguins, seals and other Antarctic wildlife. When the central group reaches Little America, the explorers unload their equipment and, making use of the twenty-four-hour summer daylight, quickly build a tent city and airstrips. Admiral Byrd flies in on the first airplane, which lands perfectly, but the remaining planes must take off at night in order to beat an approaching storm. After the blizzard clears, ice is cleaned off the planes, and a man crawls down a shaft to an earlier base buried under the snow. The cold, dry air of Antarctica has perfectly preserved the supplies that were left behind. While mapping expeditions fly over the land, divers test cold-water survival suits in the frigid ocean. On flights from their base in the Bellany Islands, the eastern group spots Mt. Aramis, the only active volcano near the South pole, and near the Shakleton Ice Shelf, the explorers discover 500 miles of snowless land heated by warm water lakes, which they name Bunger's Oasis.
The short summer is ending, and the fleet near Little America is becoming frozen in the ice. After the fleet is freed by an icebreaker, it departs, leaving behind Byrd and some volunteers to continue explorations by air. During the eastern group's mapping of the Phantom Coast, mountains made of coal are discovered. A crew is lost during one flight, and after a search of two weeks, the survivors are found. Three men die in the crash and one, badly burned, loses his legs to frostbite. The icebreaker returns to pick up Byrd and his men, and the successful expedition returns home, having learned much about this largely unknown territory.

It's a shame that guy you see talking right at the beginning of this was John Forenstahl who "knew too much" and was "silenced" and deemed a suicide and weirdly they've done that same EXACT thing to another one of their men that was high up with his clearance and was mysteriously found on the road having "jumped" out a tall building to his death but luckily his family took the C.I.A. to court for killing him and they even exhumed his body after decades later and when his body was examined it was clearly obvious that some sort of struggle went on in the room and he had fractures that didn't fit the crime scene and the family actually won the case agaisnt them!! If Highjump was just polar conditions training and gear testing, why is it still classified? Highly classified at that. Byrd couldn't even open his orders until after departure. This was right after WW II. The world was war weary and broke, yet the US finds this important enough to gather 14 ships including carrier. sub, and destroyer escort, 5000 Marines. There is far more to this story.

@@keithsmith855 I wrote this elsewhere, but we (meaning humans, not Americans specifically) had the coastline mostly mapped, way earlier than 1946. The map they're looking at, around 3:30 into the movie, is accurate for 1946 prior to the expedition - coastline looks good, and some of the interior mountain ranges, but lots of unknowns still. That's why the documentary is called the "Secret Land". There's still areas we haven't studied in close detail. Their maps are as good as they were for the era. The goal was to explore more, by air.

Truly researching this thoroughly proves just how little we think we know about Earth/science/history. In an interview on TV he stated there was more land there with resources aplenty. He said it was about the size of America. I wish I knew what the Gov's know. I can only imagine the Tech they have now. Its literally beyond what is in movies now. The public is 20 or so years behind what they have, or more.

I just watched a video of the last survivor of OPERATION HIGH JUMP. He was celebrating his 102th birthday! I wanted to watch because I heard they found the entrance to middle earth where the warm lakes enabled the green oasis to flourish despite being surrounded by ice. I also heard about the mountains of coal and endless resources but Bryd and his crew had to fight off Nazi's in spaceships that I actually heard Byrd say"can go from Pole to pole in a matter of minutes". I didn't see that on this video, tho.

Northwind was a new ship at this time. I was stationed aboard years later. She survived until she was retired in 1989, the last of her class when she was forty five years old. Great ship.

Crossing the line "ritual" all Navy ships do this though it's been dumbed down a lot and less violent now a days...back then you got your ass handed to you. I went through the watered down version since there was females onboard myself in 1999. I can assure you that footage was extremely edited to look like a "bit of fun". But this "ritual" isn't anything special and more like a rite of passage or a fraternity initiation.

This all takes place right about same time James Forestall became our first secretary of defense! Well, he was fired , committed, and fell 16 stories to his death all within 1 yr of his being appointed. Perhaps it was he that wanted to divulge what was found in Antarctica to the American public? Perhaps he is and was one of the last honorable people to serve in high places in govt?

Admiral Byrd was a legend. All those men are commended for their bravery to venture into uncharted waters/ice quite literally. I watched a video years ago about Byrd - how his flight was diverted, controlled by an unknown force. His plane landed in a strange place and what he saw then remained classified. He saw another world called the Hollow Earth and the people living there. We have been fed lies about the history and creation stories of this planet and the world as we know it. #fulldisclosure

You can see lots of Antarctic footage in modern documentaries. Werner Herzog's is amazing. It's called "Encounters at the End of the World", and won a bunch of awards. It's about Antarctica, but also about the people who live there and work there. Very cool.

I truly LOVE these types of old movies. There was much more transparency back then and they kept the citizens informed of what was going on. They don't tell us anything now. I wish they would start doing something like this again.
That was a dangerous trip they took. Especially with what we know now about what really happened. Admiral Byrd was put in an asylum to shut him up about what he saw and reported in his TV interview. I believe every word he said and would like to see the diary he kept that was seized.

Paul Siple was on this adventure, wrote a book, had dinner at his Boy Scout Leaders house before and after the trip. My Grandfather was his Scout leader, Adam Nickolas Lutz.

My grandfather was a navy Seabee and worked in Antarctica for almost four years not long after this time period. He never really talked about it and the only slides we have from his time there are of him with penguins. I wonder what he was building down there, he said weather stations but who knows 🤷♂️

So, here's a basic observation and a few basic questions: First of all, all of what you are seeing here is an attempt at seizure of huge unclaimed mineral resources by a group of London and New York ultra high level international banks. But then there are a series of questions about this operation which the American people deserve answers. Such as; How many ships and men were assigned to this "scientific expedition" What was found on the mission? Why did Admiral Bird cut short the mission and return to the US,? What could or would force the action to apparently abandoning a high level objective such as this mission?
We will never know.

Antarctica isn't 100% frozen desert. "Oasis" is relative - they're not saying that mammals are hanging out there, more like small organisms and extremophiles. That's still awfully cold, just barely above freezing.

For recent times this was a formidable force and a rather unusual line-up for a "research expedition" as reported. Before leaving for Antarctica, Admiral Byrd declared: "The expedition is of a military nature." But he didn't give any details.

@@gottagoata few years ago looking into the Mt Erebus accident I randomly came across something that caught my eye.I noticed in the background of the planes flying over the ice searching for the wreckage there was a series of clouds in the distance behind some mountains that seemed like maybe a few miles away probably more, however the odd part was the right hand end of this set of clouds seemingly had an unnatural perfect looking arching cut along the entire length, they looked like they were sitting on the edge of a transparent bowl. I didn't think much of it then except how unnatural and odd it looked, but over time and discovering much more I keep thinking back to that random oberservation and believe maybe this was like a firmament edge of somesort but they may also extend or be exits/entry.

I find the plane crash on the volcano equally fascinating. When commercial planes were allowed to fly over antarctica in the 70s.Tour Flight out of NZ allegedy crashed into Mt. Erebus with 250 lost. No recovery efforts ever were made. The whole thing sounds extremely suspect.
What? Air New Zealand 901 did not "allegedly" crash. It definitely crashed with all lives lost. Also, there was a massive recovery effort (called "Operation Overdue" and in fact there is a documentary about it.

Why would you take thousands of men almost 5000, a huge feat alone just to feed them and risk massive loss of life if anything went wrong just for a science expedition. Even 500 men would be way over the top. They plainly went there for something much bigger, I mean this is what would happen if you were going to war. I'm new to this story so am I missing something.
Massive post-war military surplus, for a start. We had literally thousands of spare ships after the war ended, and more manpower than we had use for. The Antarctic Developments Project was created to scout the continent for potential economic/scientific use, and maybe more importantly, as a show of force/power in the cultural war with the Soviets, which was ramping up. Basically, flaunting our wealth and military excess, in order to intimidate our potential enemies. Cold War, in a nutshell.
Later on, in 1959, the United States Antarctic Program was formally established. Wikipedia isn't always great, but their article on USAP is pretty good for an outline, if you want to check that out.

Read At The Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft. It was written in 1931 and was about a U. S. expedition to Antarctica which ended very poorly. This documentary reminds me that story which was written over a decade before

He never made any statements about inner Earth, beyond the one subliminal statement about more land beyond the South Pole. He was a well known Freemason and was chosen to lead five separate expeditions to Antarctica for a reason... he was very much down with the agenda.

So, all in all, what does everyone think is out there in Antarctica that they're secretly hiding so securely?. I don't remember all the details of the conversation but the keys points were: I had a friend (with a lot of money) who told me over ten years ago, closer to 9/11/2002, while visiting New Zealand for two months, tried to visit or get as close as possible to Antarctica. He said the whole area was highly guarded and protected with many warships (all with his hair standing up on end w anxiety while explaining this). I knew nothing of this CT like I do now, I thought he was referring to we were at a possible major scale war at the time. I bet this was what he was talking about, something they're hiding out there.

This was a good video. But I have a question. How were they able to get such detailed footage with all the peril going on? There were pics of planes about to crash and boats about to sink however there was no water on the camera once. Cameras pretty steady on scenes that seem as if they wouldve been flung across the ship or out the plane. Not to say they did not film, I'm jus curious how the camera crew accomplished such a detailed and streamlined video of this magnitude

Hmm... at 59:11mins in, where they say Byrds plane is missing, then show a shot of his plane(?) in flight, who is in the other plane filming him missing? and every detail of the flights problems is filmed exactly at the right moments... the right hand prop stopping, filmed exactly at the right moment!? Did they have cameras watching the engines back then? Were the aircrew calm enough to say "yea, go ahead, film whatever you want", to an onboard film crew? Or just random coincidence?
