  • Searching in a remote part of the American Southwest led me to finding a canyon rich in ancient history and unusual geologic structures.
I decided to backpack here for 3 days. What I discovered on my first day took my breath away, and left me convinced that I was never truly alone in the course of this hike.
This was probably one of the best places I have ever flown my Drone.
As always, please leave a place better than you found it. Thanks for watching, and make sure to subscribe to The_POV_Channel for lots more like this.

I believe I’ve found a ruin there that I cannot find any information online about but it’s in a dangerous spot, don’t feel comfortable without a drone.

It might sound cruel but when I moved to the mountains in Virginia I knew that we have a pretty significant black bear population and whenever I had to walk outside to my car at night I’d always have my dog go first and if everything was okay, then I’d go out! I’ve had my share of too many close encounters with bears while living here. I always trust my dogs instincts and nose!

My sister got married on the Annandale Ranch near Concan Texas. There is a bat cave on the ranch that is famous. Multi millions of bats emerge starting as early as 3pm in late May because it takes them so long to emerge with there being so many. It is an awesome display and the entrance is level with the ground atop a small ridge so you can stand within feet of where they are blasting out. Amonia small of the guano is pretty overwhelming though. Big hawks and eagles hover way up in the sky and then dive through the formations of bats catching one for dinner. The bats will travel nightly down the Rio Grande valley eating bugs along all the agricultural areas.

Like magic, went to the shelter and found one who had been waiting for me there for 2 hours. He was about 1.5 years old, taken in as a stray. Had him 11 years, died unexpectedly 7 years ago. I still grieve that best dog in the world who waited for me.

That was brilliant! I remember twenty years ago when I lived on Malta for a year and explored the island obsessively I came upon Gnejna Bay in the north. It features a Death Valley looking sandstone butte that separates two popular bays and so I promptly explored the goat paths and little coves of the butte and I found that the flat-topped butte was honeycombed with caves around its base, some of which had faint signs of smoke stains on their roofs. Then one day I saw, just sticking out of the sand by the water a strange, amber coloured object. It was a beautifully fossilized section of some big rib off of some kind of creature the likes of which is long gone from Europe. Then I realized that both ends still showed the signs of extremely sharp cuts, like a butchers cleaver. I noticed that along both flat sides of the rib there were multiple repeated slice scars. I sat there looking out over the Mediterranean and I realized that, at the very least, this was a relic of at least 200,000 years ago or more, long before Homo Sapiens wandered in. Until the Ice Age ended, no doubt Neanderthals lived in this series of caves as high as up as a castle tower with a view over miles of grassland which the Med has since covered. One night perhaps a woolly rhino or a mammoth had been butchered and with a great deal of precision one of our Neanderthal foremothers had delicately stripped the meat off this enormous piece of spare rib with a stone tool as sharp as a razor and passed it to one of her family, probably saying, "Eat it before it gets cold, and don't wipe your fingers in your hair!" The bone was then thrown down the slope, turning to stone, where it lay until I found it.

I did a day hike in this very canyon just a couple of months ago!! We ran into a white stallion and three brown mares on our way out, maybe even the same ones in the beginning of this video, but the stallion was really aggressive. Thankfully, we were on our way back out and not far from the trail head but we had to do some creative maneuvering by darting from tree to tree to get past them. I had never encountered an aggressive horse before this hike, let alone a wild stallion protecting his mares. The sound he let out right before we saw him was a sound I won't soon forget! This is an extremely beautiful canyon and I plan on going back to backpack there sometime.

I just discovered your channel, I love it! I like outdoor hiking, but I'm not interested in mountains, dangerous walls, I never thought of challenging them by climbing them, because man can always lose, rock is harder than our body, too many people die every year climbing the Alps (I'm Italian). Stay away too, please, use your drone to take your eyes higher, it's the same thing in the end. Btw I like your video for the wild and mysterious nature you capture. Smart idea not to put any soundtrack, because silence you recorded is worth much more than any music, strangely deep and magical. Maybe I wouldn't have ventured into that pond in the cave, the water is so dark and you didn't even tie yourself to a safety rope (or at least it doesn't show). And then the scrambled eggs, the dogs smelling some perfume, the wild horses approaching curiously. Wonderful America, exciting video, I shake your hand.

Absolutely breathtaking! If I wasn't so old I would love to see these places! I did some of this kind of thing on horseback in my youth. Back in1980 I was out on a horse trek and discovered a wagon wreck in a small canyon. It was really cool too because everything was still there. The skeleton of the horse was still in the harness, a great deal of the bones were missing though, but the spine and ribcage were still there. The wagon was torn up and all the things that were in it were still there as well. It looked like there was once an old road that wound around this little canyon but the road sort of just got slimmer and slimmer until it was no more. Maybe the wagon driver was trying to turn around when the wagon and horse went over the side. There was no sign of human bones but lots of human belongings. That was one of the coolest things I ever found on one of my horse camping trips!

I am not sure where this was filmed, but I used to fly on business to Flagstaff, Tuscon and Phoenix a lot and would look at similar terrain from the air as we flew relatively low on the commuter airlines that flew to and from Flagstaff. There were many times I looked at the canyons and wanted to hike into them, although I would wear snake boots that went up higher on my leg than the op. What surprised me about this video is that even traveling far away off the "beaten path", there are still the effects of humans. This was one of the best filmed and edited videos I have seen. I live in the Ozarks, and we have some similar terrain.

Thank you, Nolan for sharing the awesome bat cave with us all! I appreciate bats because they keep the mosquitoes in check. Years ago, I accidentally stepped on a baby bat in our accommodations at SalmonCon in North Bend, WA. My husband and I slept in a converted silo which a bat mother had a nest in the ceiling. A baby fell down to the floor and I stubbed it with my toe in the dark. We had a bat expert on the premises so we brought it to the bat guy to take to a facility to care for it. The baby was so cute and I let it grab hold of my finger and took a photo. It lived for a week but was apparently sick and eventually died. I didn't want them to kill it to find out if it had rabies or not. I never got it so it maybe was just weak and couldn't hold on to its perch. I'm also a spelunker so I'm not afraid of bats or the dark. I wanted to add that your drone videos show us vantage points we would never see any other way. Totally AWESOME footage! 😁👍

Thanks for showing me a new canyon to explore. Been to a lot of places in this state but I’ve always just driven by this location. Took a minute to find the exact spot but i’m familiar with the area. Thanks for not giving everyone the exact details. Part of the fun is discovering these places for yourself. Cheers

I built a bat cave 10 years ago. Guano now 15 centimeters deep along the walls. Hundreds of babies chirping high pitched screeches I can almost hear them. Send you a photo or video on request. Massive reduction in mosquitoes noticed before/after. And yes, I have had malaria, now I have bats.

It broke my heart when your pup was so worried about you being in there:(

It looks so remote there but I heard dogs and a rooster in the distance.
We love and appreciate you and your exciting videos! 😊
    Please be careful sir.

Not remote at all. A popular side by side ride near Morenci. Well known.
