“Expedition! To the Frozen Continent” (1960) is a black-and-white documentary-style film as part of the “Expedition!” TV series hosted by Colonel John D. Craig. This particular episode, which is narrated by Norwegian explorer Captain Finn Ronne, chronicles the mission of 39 men through the Weddell Sea to establish Ellsworth Station - the largest scientific base during the international geophysical year in Antarctica. This mission was part of the United States Navy’s Operation Deep Freeze Mission I which prepared a permanent research station and paved the way for more exhaustive research in later Deep Freeze operations.

Ships land on ice barrier and work quickly to transport supplies; Shots of engineers, Seabees, scientists, sailors working together to build station (7:19). First part of station complete 1957, Captain Edwin McDonald turns Ellsworth over to crew of 39 men in ceremony where American flag hoisted up flag pole (8:20). Aurora Tower (9:21). Men dislodge fuel drums, navigate them through underground tunnels (10:15). Canteen: Sunday dinner at base, Navy cook warms steaks on griddle, fresh-baked bread (10:51). Camera pans personal quarters of Captain Ronne, walls adorned with maps, pictures of loved ones (11:49). Dr. Edward Thiel computes gravimetric pull of earth, data read and evaluated; Studying “Whistlers” in the Antarctic (12:08). Man stands up out of Sno-Cat and waves to sky, mail plane flies over head; Shot of men reading letters from loved ones (17:23). Sno-Cat becomes stuck in crevasse; Aerial view of accident from rescue plane window (17:43). U.S. Air Force Douglas C-47 Skytrain lands, delivers fuel and supplies (18:06). Air ducts used to de-ice wings of C-47 and men load it with supplies; Plane takes off - views of Polar mountain range from sky (18:43). Aerial view Sir Vivian Fuchs expedition stalled, stuck in crevasse; Shots of Fuchs playing with dog; Supplies unloaded from plane (19:38). Views nursery of Emperor Penguins and babies waddling across tundra; Close-up shots of penguins (20:39). Perhaps USN Bell Model 47 "Sioux" helicopter lands at base; Captain McDonald returns (22:25). Men board USS Wyandot to return home; Ronne announces over ham radio mission completed (22:45). Col. Craig closing words (23:14).
