Ah! This is back when Mercedes-Benz automobiles were built like tanks - they were just awesome! My Dad bought a brand-new 1985 MB 300D Turbodiesel - in German Racing Silver with Navy Blue leather interior. That car was simply awesome. Sadly, they lost their way and ever since ~2000, MB cars were not the same.

I was never so proud of a car as I was of my 190E. I lost it in a head on crash caused by another driver. I never felt so safe in a situation like that as I did then. An amazingly engineered automobile that I don’t believe is offered by Daimler today.

Any 80s MB is the closest you'll ever get to driving a production car where the mechanical engineers always got their way, all the way down to grease fittings on the door hinges. Very blank check, "it costs what is costs" style design. The deeper you get into the 90s and 00s the more apparent it becomes they started building them to a price point.

I'm guessing this was late 1983 or early 1984. There were completed specimens of type W124, and the type W126 vehicles still had ridged lower body cladding. Also interesting at 16:13 that the "exhaust emissions" test was being done on a USA "Federalized" emissions vehicle - as evident by the sealed beam headlamps which was still a legal requirement in the States.

I think you're right. That car on the emission stand looks like a 300SD, and I see the early gold colored switchover valve on the firewall for overboost protection.

This must've been produced in 1985, the S Classes shown are pre 1986 models, and in 85 the new W124 sedan replaced the W123, but the T123 station wagon was still being produced.

The current reliability ratings of most of them are pretty much at the very bottom for many of them, including Benz, though to be fair they did just introduce a lot of new electric models, where they have little experience.

To put this one to bed... It was a heat issue on the cars. Something was wrong with the insulation and it didn't tolerate hot/cold cycles under the hood. The coating became very brittle and just fell off the copper wiring. Kinda wish mine caught fire and burnt to the ground! I would have made a fortune off the insurance.
